A climber's dream.

Salewa's Peuterey 30 Backpack offers a comfy carry whether you're heading to nearby climbing crags or faraway alpine cirques. Its Contact Fit suspension system places cushy foam at all the areas your body touches. Salewa added an ISB board to ensure support and stability for heavy loads on long trails.

The Peuterey 30 is a traditional top-loader with a side access zipper to help you reach things at the bottom without unloading all your gear. The top lid can be removed when you need to shed some weight, and the hip fins are also removable when you really want to go ultralight. Salewa equipped this pack with features specifically designed for the versatile ascender, like the rope fastener for climbing and attachments for ice axes or trekking poles. There's also a port for your hydration reservoir and pockets at the top lid, waist belt, and inside for organized convenience on all your adventures.

Not quite perfect but climbs so well

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I bought this pack a few years ago for winter climbing and initially hated it. The buckles are a proprietary design that take some getting used to, though they are easier than the normal kind to operate with gloves or mittens on. The straps are thick and sometimes have to be manually assisted back through the tensioners to loosen them. The lower tool holder is the push-through metal toggle kind - fine, but not my favorite. I relegated it to a travel pack, which it was good for. In the last year, though, I've taken it out climbing more and it's really grown on me. It's light, tougher than nails, comfortable, and climbs REALLY well. If this one ever does wear out I'll most likely buy another one.
