Why We Like The Salewa Ortles Hybrid TW CLT Jacket

Built for tackling high alpine pursuits where you often find yourself pushing hard one moment and stopping the next to regroup, the Salewa Ortles Hybrid TW CLT Jacket is all about climate control. Its hybrid design only places insulation where it's most needed—at the chest, shoulders, and hood—while leaving the lower arms and sides more ventilated with soft, stretchy panels. Tirolwool insulation uses the air-trapping, moisture-wicking, and odor-eating benefits of Tyrolian wool, enhanced with thermo-reactive minerals that allow moisture to escape while reflecting body heat. Soft, wind resistant, and treated to shed light precipitation, the Ortles Hybrid is the perfect addition to your alpine arsenal.

Super warm with the wool inserts

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I like the wool inserts in key core body areas. Definitely keeps the temp steady. The warms and parts of the sides of the body is thinner, stretchy inserts which dissipates excess heat nicely. I'm slimmer build with average chest width. It is the perfect, close to body fit without being too constrictive. I have never purchased from this brand, but so far one of my favorite pieces.

Beautiful jacket but.

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Not sure if I got a melon but the tiny wool insulation falls out of this thing on the regular at around 100X to what you would expect from a down jacket shedding some down insulation. It looks like a dog laid on me everytime I wear this with all the insulation that's falling out. It's pretty out of control. I don't see how a company would approve the sale of something like this considering the outer layer appears to permeable for the super thin wool insulation.

Light, warm, breathable, wind resistant

I got this jacket a couple of days ago and was suspicious on how light and thin it was. My first thought was, this won't be enough by itself. I bought it for 150 USD but I would have paid the full 200 dollars, it is worth the price. The same day I rode 10 miles with it in a very windy chill day (40 degrees) and it was surprisingly warm and breathable. I had only a T-shirt underneath and was much warmer than I expected AND wind resistant. The next Weekend I went for a hike in a much windier day and it was still enough all by itself. Something that I love about it is that even if I sweat I don't get "cold sweat" after stopping. The arms have no filling so they are really comfortable when moving and even so they keep you warm. The looks of it are amazing and I own a raincoat and a rope bag from Salewa, the quality has always been great. The only downside I've found, and I found it too early is that the filling is so fine that it is somehow "escaping" through the outer lining. That doesn't seem right, I'm fearful that in a couple years all the filling is gone.
