Ultra-heavy protection in an ultralight package.

It's surprising that the Salewa Men's Firetail Evo Mid GTX Hiking Boot can offer so much protection and support while only weighing one pound. Gore-Tex Extended Comfort guarantees waterproof protection in a highly breathable package for active pursuits. Salewa's innovative 3F System Evo places aluminum wires along the heel to give more flexibility and mobility without hindering the mid-cuff's support.

Wear-resistant aramid keeps the Firetail's upper highly durable, extremely breathable, and incredibly light. Salewa wrapped rubber around the upper's bottom for 360-degree protection from rocks and twigs. This boot also features Cleansport NXT's odor-resistance, a conforming Multi-Fit Footbed + for customized comfort, climbing-style laces for a secure fit from heel to toe, and Vibram's heavily-lugged Scrambler sole for reliable grip on rugged terrain.

I had a family member recently move out here and he needed a pair of boots. After some research we selected the firetails and he has loved the boot. The vibram soles have held up superbly on the early spring hikes and the odor blocker system has kept his stinky feet in check!

    Fantastic boot!

I have had a pair of these for about 3 years now, and I have to say they are the best light boot I have ever owned. The climbing style lacing system is perfect for tuning the fit when you are descending from climb and need to keep your toes from bashing. The soles have been plenty grippy and held up very well. The material seems to breath quite well with a light wicking sock. Only addition for me was a set of insoles.

Fantastic light hiking boot for the $$$

I am a devoted customer of Italian boot designers, and %99 of my mountaineering, ice climbing and rock climbing footwear are thus. However, I had heard great things about Salewa - and they were all true. This is one of my new favorite pieces of footwear. Unlike the Italians, this brand is not snug in the toe, and as I wear a 12.5 street shoe, the 13s were perfect to allow for foot swelling and my choice of sock. I've used this on stand-alone hikes and also tricky approaches up steep sandstone and talus with a full pack. I love the gortex that keeps your feet dry, but doesn't make them sweat too much. The Firetail has definitely given me reason to investiage their other footwear lines. Big thanks to my Gearhead badass, Ben R. for suggesting these.

Take the grip of an approach shoe and give it the protection of a lightweight hiking boot and you get the Salewa Firetail! These boots rock!

I have always been the guy that hikes in trail runners and approach shoes. Lately I have felt the need for the extra protection and support of a boot, but I didn't want to lose the trail characteristics of my typical hiking shoes. After taking these boots on a long weekend in Southern Utah, I am please to report that they fit the bill perfectly! My first day in them involved hiking about 6 miles with around 3k feet in elevation gain and descent. I also did some canyoneering and put them through 12 rappels with muddy and slick rocks conditions. The boots have incredible grip on slick rock and rappelled mud and water with ease. They are also very breathable (for a waterproof boot) and paired with some good wool socks my feet felt great at the end of the day. The multi-fit foot beds that are included made getting the perfect fit super easy, and as advertised I got no blisters after 3 days of extensive use.

If you are looking for a lightweight, flexible, breathable boot that has incredible grip on varying conditions, then these are the boots for you.

If you have any questions about the Salewa Firetail, or any other boots on our site, please contact me directly.

    Tons of grip!

I'm really happy with how low-profile the Firetail Evo boots are for being pretty legit hikers. They're lightweight, but still have a decently protective sole, and provide plenty of ankle support.

    Best Boot for Me

I have been trying to find a goretex boot that is both lightweight enough for use on long hikes and also looks good enough for city wear. In comes this boot! I have had my pair in black for 4 months now, and they have become my daily shoe. Walking around Seattle streets in the Winter often includes puddles and muddy corners, but I don't even have to worry where I step with these. At the same time, they look great with a pair of jeans for casual daily wear. I just loosen them up to a point that I can easily slip them on an off and they are great! On a more important note, I have taken them on a variety of hikes including snowshoeing and trail running and they perform great under all conditions! A truly versatile shoe! I typically wear 10.5 shoes and these fit great at 10.5 as well.

    An O.K. Boot

I bought these boots after having the wildfire pro and really liking the Y lacing system for stiff ankle support. I was, however, a bit upset with how shallow the back dips in the boot to accomodate you putting your foot in--I think it undermines their Y-lacing system stiffness. Within the first month of buying these boots, the laces broke off on both shoes which is obnoxious--sell me boots with strong laces built to last. I am buying a quality boot and laces, not just a quality boot that will need aftermarket replacements after a few multiday hikes. I have since replaced this and had no problems with the new laces I got from EMS. I also found the 'wear resistant upper' of this shoe to not be wear resistant at all--in fact, it wore much faster than other merrel mid-height boots I have owned and I am a bit disappointed with the craftsmenship of a boot I was expecting to get a long life out of--the uppers and their sidewalls are falling apart after a couple hundred miles of hiking. I do have some nice things to say--the waterproofing and antimicrobial in this boot is fantastic--never had an issue with smell or water. The boots breathe horribly but that is to be expected with such a heavy plastic coating on them. Although GoreTex is supposed to breathe, these do not--be aware of that on hot summer days--your feet are going to be saunas. I would stick to other models by salewa--I have tried a friend's mountain trainer mid and think that boot makes up for all the firetail's shortcomings--more breathable (albeit a little less water resistant), better ankle support by simply not tapering the back of the boot down!!, and better stock laces (or at least they haven't broken in the year he has owned them)

    Great Boot

My feet are wide with a high arch. After comparing several different brands and sizes, I settled with these. The Keen offering was close to what I wanted in width, but the top of my foot rubbed. I tried La Sportiva Core GTX (too narrow), Salomon's GTX (too narrow), and pretty much everything REI had.
After about 100 miles, they are in excellent condition. Even the laces are in good condition. Would recommend and would buy again. Cable might just be a gimmick, but the support is very good. Not too stiff, not too soft.
I wear a size 9 in pretty much everything, went with a 42.5 in these for expansion. Ended up perfect with a sock liner and light sock.

    My go to Boot.

    versatile hike/approach shoe

Have used this for Kilimanjaro (changed to warmer boots for summit), in the ice and snow (excellent grip, whereas I was slipping around in inov8 roclites), and via ferrating in Tirol (again, excellent grip). Highly recommended for people looking for a cross/compromise between a lightweight runner/trail shoe, and a heavyweight leather boot, that will do well in multiple terrains.

Tried on waaaay too many hiking boots, looking for a versatile boot with moderate ankle support, while being as light as possible. This was the winner. It's comfy and flexible right out of the box. Part of me, selfishly, does not want to advertise this, but I feel I must reward the company on crafting such a great boot.

    Unanswered Question

I typically wear a size 9.5. I see that this boot only has a 9 or 10. I really like the boot and would love to pick up a pair but I am a little leery about the sizing. Any recommendations?
