Can't beat it!

I have had a 4200 on my 5wt pulse for over a year now and it has never came close to letting me down. I like it so much I just picked up a 2ed one to put on my 11' 3wt spay. Bump up two weights to hold the larger line.

Great Reel, This is More Like 4.5 Stars

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I went for this reel for my 5 wt set up because I was tired of the slow line pick up of my old mid arbor reel. In the line pick up department, this is a HUGE upgrade. This is a super large arbor reel that picks up a ton of line per revolution!
One down side to super large arbor reels, especially for lighter weight setups, is that they're too heavy and the balance of the rod gets thrown off. However, Sage did a great job at keeping the weight down and this reel comes in right about 4oz.
The drag knob is extremely smooth and just feels high quality when you adjust it. The drag on this reel is pretty powerful, probably way more than you need for a 5 weight trout set-up. But hey, if you happen to hookup with a steelhead or something, you'll be ready.
My one gripe with this reel is an issue for me, but maybe not for a lot of people, and it has to do with spool removal. It's not a one button spool removal, which can be a hassle if you're switching spools/lines on the fly. To remove the spool, you need to unscrew a little piece (which then must be removed and kept track of!) and then you can switch spools. It takes a couple of minutes, all told, and is just a bit inconvenient.

All in all, I'd definitely recommend the reel!

I bought it because I used a friends

Yes a friend let me try his out, This was the first fly reel I had ever used myself. I took to fly fishing like a fish to water lol no point intended. But ya I used it all day. My buddy said at the end of the day now get your own. That's one of my favorite reels. I'm just getting into fly fishing so I do not know the lingo for much of a helpful review but I'm learning. And I'm glad to have this reel (of my very own) now. And not that it matters but I love the red color

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Sage gets a bad rap when it comes to reels, and i'm not really sure why. Every sage reel I have ever owned has never given me any issue. Their reels are in the average weight range for the price and are aesthetically pleasing while not compromising durability or weight. This isnt the most expensive reel in the book but its also not the cheapest either, and I believe it is a good fit for someone looking to step up their game and bring the quality gear with it.

I hooked up my dad with this reel a year or two back on his 8' 6" 4 wt and I haven't heard him complain ever since. All i really hear from him when we are fishing is how amazing the setup is and how amazing the fishing is and how amazing fly fishing is, pretty much how it should be.

Don't buy a reel that keeps locking up on you or has you fighting with the mechanics and drag, buy a reel that gets you on the water and keeps you there, it's where the fish live.

Take a look at him going toe to toe with a 17 in rainbow in our secret Colorado location, fish landed.

      Best Reel Ive Owned

This reel is a beaut. Stellar quality. Very durable. Light weight. Easy to take apart and put together. Adjusting the drag is easy as well (very helpful when trudging through trees). I honestly don’t have any complaints about this reel. It also comes with its own reel case, which is super duper handy super-duper handy for clean storage.

        Best Reel Ive Owned

        Go to..

I have this reel on a Sage One 9ft/4wt and its a great go to set up. The smoothness of the reel and large arbor make it perfectly weighted and a great fighter for the smallest, or biggest fish you can convince to eat your fly.

This is one I'll keep for a lifetime.

Why didn't I buy this sooner?!

Love this reel. Using it with a Sage One 9ft/5wt and it's fantastic. The large arbor is a no-brainer. Simple and smooth drag settings for a wide variety of fish. Enclosed system ensures you won't run into issues with the elements. The bead blast bronze color is awesome.

            Light, smooth, and durable

Tried this reel a couple weeks ago on a Sage One 4 wt w/ a RIO Gold on it. Could not have asked for a better set up for our Green Drake hatch here in Utah. This reel is light, smooth, and durable. The drag adjustments are perfect for fighting the fish of your life or a small stream brookie. The enclosed drag system is very smooth and stays smooth since dirt and grim can't get in there.

              Sage 4250 Series Fly Reel

The Sage 4200 Series Fly Reel is amazing! Im one that takes care of all of my gear, but my buddy has the same reel as me, and does not take such good care of his stuff.. Anyways, the reel is durable! Smooth drag and a great feel makes the 4200 a very popular reel in the rivers around my house in Heber City, Utah. Mine is a 5 weight, paired with a 9 foot Sage Vantage rod, The very best, while not breaking the bank! Love my reel and I recommend it to anyone who is in the market! You'll be hooked on sage.
