Good for Running or Hiking

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this for my Rhodesian Ridgeback, who is about 13 months old now. He's just over 90 lbs now, so I went with the L/XL. The fit is mostly good, actually perfect up front, but the back strap I have to adjust almost as small as it can get to fit properly. This is more due to the breed's deep chest/narrow waist build, but it is a consideration for any dog with that build. Fortunately, even if the back strap is a little loose, I can't see how a dog would fall out of this harness, due to the great fit up front.

Other than that, it's perfect! Since the leash clip is positioned in a great spot, it allows just enough control while giving the pup freedom to move. If your dog requires a lot of correction to behave on leash, it may not be ideal until he or she is better trained, but for running this does nicely. My dog seems to enjoy it, although he was terrified of it when I first tried putting it on. Once he knew what it was for, he loved it, and now sits, ready to be dressed as soon as I pick it up.

It seems well made and durable, definitely worth the price.

Kit's Original Harness

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This was Kit's first harness and while she loved it 98% of the time, she did not love the handle feature. Kit mostly did not love the handle featured because she once had to be hauled up a scrambling rock-face, and because she frequently became a pocketbook dog. But even at her 45 lbs, this harness was great to use for longer and more technical hikes, incase there was ever a reason where we (humans) needed to use the handle to help her up or down.

But over all this is a really a great harness. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out to me: mdavin@backcountry.com

Ruffwear to the Rescue!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This harness is amazing! Our dog recently had back surgery and has difficulty getting up/down stairs, the couch, you name it - he could use help with it. This harness relieves the burden of his solid 55 lbs so that we can help him without hurting ourselves in the process! He also has a broad chest and small waist and we have found many harnesses do not work for his shape. With the multiple adjustment points on this harness, we are able to fit it like it was made for him. It is also comfortable enough for him to where for most of the day without any issues or rubbing or discomfort. We've previously used Ruffwear products with him and know that they are durable and well made - great all around choice!

Suitcase Dog!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used this item for every activity, from walks around the neighborhood to backcountry skiing. Its intended use was for more serious outdoor endeavors, but I love it so much, it comes on every outing.

The item runs true to size. My mini aussie is about 25 lbs and 18" tall, and she wears the size small. I tighten the straps all the way, and it's the perfect fit. I thought about getting an xs, but I figure she'll only grow, so I decided that the small would work.

I LOVE that the leash attaches to this harness between my dog's shoulder blades - if I need to give her a yank, I'm not pulling on her throat. I also really like the handle feature, which you can see utilized in this photo. Perfect if you need to grab your dog quickly.

If your fur-friend is your favorite outdoor partner, take care of them - get them a secure harness. Great gear isn't just for humans!

Best harness on the market

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The picture shows Ruffwear Web Master harness in size S on my 29 lb welsh corgi cardigan pup. His chest circumference at the time was 53 cm (20.9 inches), which is a bit less than what size S is intended for (56-69 cm / 22-27 inches). Fortunately, the sizing was not a problem for us: I easily adjusted the harness to fit my pup well. The chest and belly straps were a little too long, but I tucked their loose ends inside the protective sleeves that cover the straps; this kept them out of the way. Now at almost 12 months of age and 32 lbs, my dog continues to use the harness. The straps had to be loosened a bit, of course. Still works great for us. Washes nicely in the washing machine. The only problem with this harness is the aluminium ring at the top. It probably has sharp or uneven edges that snag at the webbing of the nylon strap that holds it in place. After a season of almost daily use, the strap is frayed and half worn through. I strongly hope Ruffwear will find a more secure way to attach the ring to the harness as I am looking to buy another one for the time when the ring comes unattached completely.

Can't Leave Home Without It

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is by far my favorite harness I have owned. And I've tried way too many. The handle really helps when I need to boost my pup into the car, or quickly snatch him from imminent danger. I love how adjustable it is. I have a boxer who has a very wide rib cage and teeny tiny waist. I've had fit issues with all my other harness's. With all the options on this one to adjust, you can really make it fit your dog like a glove. I bought the bright red for ultimate visibility and it has reflective points on it as well. He can still run and jump and play. This harness isn't restrictive at all. It also does not cut into his front leg pits like other harness's do.

Solid Harness

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This harness works great for my young pup who loves to pull on the leash and chase anything that fly's overhead. The handle is awesome for tight situations when I need to keep him close. I've used it several days in a row now and the dog doesn't seem to have any issues with it.

Good harness

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love using this for his leash much better than the collar. He is a lot easier to control and I don't feel like I'm choking him all the time. This was a great buy!

Add the brush guard for best comb!

This harness works great, we have a lot of brush around our area and Marvel loves running full speed through every bit she can. It protects her belly and her back from the beaches very well and if need be I can grab that handle on top and help guide her. Quality and fit are good. Once she had it for a few weeks we were able to adjust it to fit right, now it's a quick slip and two snaps and she is ready for exploring. Thanks for the great product. Oh by the way she has the brush guard and that's what helps with the protection of her belly.

Does it help walking a dog that pulls

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I was wondering ..I have a 100 lb lab/husky mix who will NOT walk without pulling like crazy... Will this help..I really want to take her for walks and help her and I lose some weight... I have never been able to walk her.. :/

You're on the right track, but a harness alone won't help her 100% with the pulling issue you're faced with. I recommend you purchasing the palisades pack. Reason being, once you put the pack on her, and load it with items such as water bottles, maybe a favorite toy of hers, a treat when you're done and her doggie bags, she's going to know she has a job to do. You're going to see a new side of her. The weighted pack will slow her down, help her burn more calories, and ease the pulling. I've used a pack for 9 years and it changed everything. My dog loves wearing it from hiking to neighborhood walks. Plus she carries everything we need. Good luck!

    Suitcase dog!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We call our pups The Suitcase Dogs when they wear their Web Masters because the handle makes it so easy to pick them up in the event that they need to be moved or can't climb up something.

Anyway! This harness is awesome! I just bought one for my newly adopted mini heeler and she's loving it! She knows that when I grab the Web Master, it's go time and she gets so stoked. It's way easy to put on and to adjust. My husband and I use the Web Master for just about everything: bike rides, runs, hikes, and so on. I have experience with a previous model as we have one of these for our older dog who, despite his 45 pound constitution and age, has freakish brute strength and often yanks me while running (we do use a gentle leader on him for walks and such) - but the Web Master has made running, biking, and hiking way with him way easy. I'd highly recommend this harness to anyone who is looking for a durable, easy to put on, and dependable harness for their pooch.
We bought our mini heeler a small and our husky-mutt-thing has a size medium. Oh, one more thing - Our husky does wear his while swimming and it definitely dries really quickly.

    Great Harness!

After using this harness (size small) for a number of months with our quickly growing RhodesianRidgeback pup, we'll be buying another larger size. Great quality from a reliable brand!

      Great Harness!

      Great Harness

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This harness is great. I've got a 10 month old goldendoodle that is fairly heavy and strong. She was pulling like crazy with her neck collar and leash. Also, we spend a lot of time taking her hiking and paddleboarding. With this harness, she can't pull nearly as much and it doesn't bother her neck when she does. Then when we're hiking or paddling, we can use the handles to lift her out of a situation easily. When she is getting a bit crazy off leash with other dogs, we can easily grab her. The only negative is that when left on she started to chew the straps (seriously, like five minutes), but managed to do some damage.

      Excellent harness

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We have used this harness for three years now and it shows NO wear. It has held up at the beach, scrambling over rocks, downed trees, in the rain, in the sun. Our dog is 95lbs and we have the XL. Handle on back is very sturdy, would work as extraction grip if needed, the metal ring for leash is beefy and secure. I am really glad I chose this harness.

      Excellent harness

      Was sceptical

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Money was tight but I needed to be able to help my dog get around. It came fast and was more than I expected. Money well spent

      Great little harness

The content listed for this product nails it. Comfortable and a must for anyone looking to take their dog into sketchy adventures. I was in a slot section of a canyon and had to hike down a ladder, being able to hold the dog from the assistance handle on top as we descended the ladder was perfect. We could have also lowered the dog with a rope but using the handle was much more sensible.

        Unanswered Question

I bought the first palisades dog harness and backpack for my dog 9 years ago and it's held up so well but my dog has grown in size. I want to keep the ruffwear backpack but I would like to get a bigger harness. Is this updated harness compatible with the old backpack attachment?

I have a dog that gets out of every harness I've bought. Can a dog get out of the webmaster harness?

        Hi Ellen,

Speaking from experience, I have had a lot of trouble with other harnesses in the past, and my blue heeler seems to houdini out of every single one. This is an exception- Ruffwear has done an outstanding job designing this piece and that seems to be the resounding feedback around it. If you have any more questions, please feel free to reach out!

could this be used for skijorning??

Do you think this would be a good harness for a back leg Amputee dog? l have a spaniel/lab mix who is undergoing surgery today and the vet encouraged us to help her lose weight afterwards with diet food and exercise. l just want to be able to help her in and out of the car easily while she still learns her balance.

Can the handle be used for securing the dog in my vehicle?

I have a dachshund so sometimes things fit her differently, according to the chart I should get her an extra small but am wondering if I should go with the small for length? She is 17 lbs

        Best Answer

        Hi there,

I would recommend purchasing the size that fits her girth the best. Even if you do get a little extra length by going up in size, it won't be of much use if it's loose on her!

If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me at kweiser@backcountry.com, I've had a whole lot of experience with these Ruffwear products!

My husband and I love to hike in Colorado...

My husband and I love to hike in Colorado but only get the opportunity once a year. This Fall we are taking our 50 pound aussie female Skylar. She will be a year and a half. We are looking for a comfortable light weight harness for her. We don't care about any backpacks just a great harness. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
