Room to roam.

The Ruffwear Roamer Leash gives your four-legged friend room to roam without violating the strict on-leash policy of your city park. The integrated elastic core gives your pooch up to an additional 4 feet to smell and investigate. Taking your Weimaraner for a run in a futile attempt to tire her out? The padded handle adjusts to be worn around your waist so your gait doesn't get completely wacky. The Talon Hook keeps this stretchy leash firmly fixed on your pup's collar, and an accessory loop means you're not carrying an overly full poop bag for miles. A traffic handle near the hook gives you a way to yank your oblivious friend out of harm's way.

Hiking with my dog just got easier

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Other leashes have been cumbersome on hikes because they required me to keep reeling in the leash to accommodate my dog's pace and wandering. The bungee feature on the Room to Roam solves that problem easily and effectively by automatically reeling my dog back in towards me. The waist belt is super convenient. and taking a tip from another reviewer, I leave the clasp secured and just open it wide enough to step into the loop then snug it up on my waist rather than fiddling with the clasp.

Ruffwear Roamer Leash

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Ruffwear Roamer Leash has been a pretty good leash- the clip, adjustable handle and loop for clip-ons are all high quality. However, the leash is definitely not chew resistant- the edges easily fray upon a little chewing. Also, the elastic portion of the leash turned into a pulling battle- when my pup realized he controlled the leash (until it was fully stretched out), the pulling began. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone with a puppy, but rather an older trained dog.

You Need This

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Purchased this originally just for running, but I now use it for everything! It's so great to have your hands free and the strap is really comfortable. I use it every time I run on the trails (my dog is a herder and tends to try to chase mountain bikers) and roads and have never had issues with the fit or with it being uncomfortable. Would recommend it to ANY dog owner.

Great for hiking and running

Kit, is a spoiled dog. But as a dog of someone who loves gear and the outdoors, naturally their dog runs a high chance to being equally decked out. For me this leash is best when used hiking or running. I make the handle wide enough to go around my waist and then Kit just runs around in front of me. This is a huge benefit, because I have spent a lot of time with very strict dog and leash laws. While it's great to let your dog roam free- there is always a time and a place and when that is not an option, this harness allows you to be hands free and gives the dog some leeway to roam and feel free. I'm really great at also helping Kit abuse her gear and everything she has has gone through the wringer. But it really helps speak to the strength, and bomberness of Ruffwear products.

Great for hiking and running

Great Leash!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My little Patsy Cline uses this leash on her hikes, daily walks, and when she comes to work with me and is attached to my desk. The extra stretch this leash gives is great for both her and me. Giving it four stars though because this leash is a chew toy for her. This is the only leash she has ever chewed on (she chews the elastic part) - but I would definitely purchase another!

Great hiking leash

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have the large length leash and it is great for when you are hiking on a trail where you have to have your dog on a leash but want more length for your dog to run a little. The bungee on this is great for absorbing the impact if your dog suddenly takes off, but this is a problem if you are in a situation where you need a lot of control because your dog has about an extra foot of give before they stop. So far the leash looks to be really well made and is holding up to a 115lb dog with no problems.

Handle became a chew toy

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Generally, I'm pretty happy with this Ruffwear Roamer Leash. I got the large and it's a great length, and there's enough of it that you can loop it around as a belt if you're cross country skiing.

A couple of problems -
1. The handle isn't the highest quality, and quickly started to come apart after my dog (admittedly an aggressive chewer) decided that she wanted to munch on it. The stitching quickly started to come apart, which I wouldn't expect to have happen for a leash of this price.
2. For a leash, it's pretty heavy. Not a huge issue, but I can imagine it being annoying.

Not chew resistant

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Just got this leash, used it once with my husky, looking for a product that I can use while backpacking with my pup on the trail. Awesome first walk on the trail. The leash works as expected, nice and springy so there is no sudden jolts for either my dog or me. Hands free option was very convenient. My only complaint was that it is not chew resistant. My husky would periodically reach back and bite the leash. I expected it to be more durable and didn't realize that she could bite right through it.

Yes I recommend, but keep it clear of their jaws!!!

Favorite Leash for Man & Dog

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is hands down the best dog leash I have ever had - I got my first 12 years ago and haven't found anything better since. I have had both the medium and large lengths - the large is great if you want to give a big dog more room to run, and the medium is what I would describe as an average leash length. The elastic in these leashes are what make them amazing - you won't get jerked if your dog suddenly decides to chase a squirrel, and similarly, they won't get choked when they run out of length. I find this feature especially helpful in the snow or on ice - the stretch makes it easier to keep your balance if the dog is pulling.

great if you dog isn't uncontrollable.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If you have a dog that drags you around or is always at the end of their leash, you are probably not going to like this. If the dog wants to pull the leash will act as a bungee cord and launch you in whatever direction the dog pulls. If you have a well behaved dog, this can be a great leash for running!

Perfect Leash, but one flaw

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this leash so much I have come back for a second. The roaming feature (bungee) is so nice for hikes, runs, and walks where you don't wish to feel every tug if you have your pup tied around your waist. The one design feature I am not as fond of on this newer version is the metal hook. I find it frustrating to try to get off once home. I have chosen to simply loosen the waist belt and step out rather than fight with the sewn loop. I do preferred the clip version that was available a few years back, but I am sure it was changed for a reason. Not enough of an issue to seek a different leash, just my feedback on the feature.

Great Leash

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Works great for hiking, backpacking and running. Love being hands free, yet maintaining control of my pup. I never have to worry about his "curiosities" getting him into trouble!

Great Leash!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We have 2 very active dogs whom we take camping/hiking almost weekly. These leashes are great for the active dog/owner as they can be worn around waist without compromising their nosy behavior!
These are the 2nd set Ive bought. The only downside is I did like the former clasp for the waist worn option!

Great Leash for running

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We have a five month old puppy that loves to pull on the leash as we walk, for some reason when we are on this leash he doesn't pull at all. It makes it the perfect leash for running and hiking.

Great Handsfree Leash

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this leash for my energetic lab on our runs. The adjustable loop allows me to run with he hands free and it light and comfortable. Also the bungee in the leash helps dampen my dogs incessant pulling! I’d highly recommend this leash to anyone looking for hands free walking.

Eases the Tug

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This leash is awesome. Ruffwear must have improved this over the last couple of years, making the stretchy portion longer, but keeping the concept the same. My pup tugs a bit while on a leash, and this really makes going on walks/runs much better for both of us!

Love this Leash

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Like everyone else - I absolutely love this leash. It's great for running, hiking, cruising around town, etc. I have them for both my dogs & they are great!

Another plus - It can double as a collar when you're in a pinch! I work at Backcountry & we are a dog friendly office. I must have been in a rush this morning because I got to work & realized I forgot to put the dog's collar on before we left the house. As you can see from the image - the roamer leash was a lifesaver!

Love this Leash

Happy Huskies

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought two so I could go on runs with my overly-enthusiastic huskies (my kids!) and not have to worry about trying to hold their pulling force in one hand and maintain a normal-esque running gait. The kids absolutely love the additional freedom that the bungee allows, but it does make it harder to bring them in to me when other (more exciting) people/dogs pass by. The handles near the base are a good idea, however they definitely are functional only at a stand still. I would give this 5 stars, but the actual leash loosens around my waist depending on how excitable the kids are. So every so often when they stop for a snow-eating-break, I have to re-tighten the leash around my waist for it to be more comfortable. (These last two parts are just for me personally, just because of how much force they pull with when they want to chase a squirrel instead..)
