The day you need the RIO Dacron Fly Line Backing will be a good day, because that means the fish of a lifetime just slurped your fly and is making an epic run. The strong braided backing is thin but still knots easily and allows you to make blind splice loops.

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Why not go with the best when it's reasonably priced? 100 yards 20lbs will do you for trout fishing. Not to mention I love the look of the orange with my RIO Gold Line

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

We all need backing. Not only for the day when we land the big fish, the monster hog we get to tell stories about for the rest of our days, but simply to take up volume on a reel and keep it looking fresh. 100 yds is totally suitable for Trout, consider 200 yds for a large arbor for salt water fishing. Don't forget to pick up line, recommend the Rio Gold.

    Rio's Mr. Dependable

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Love everything that Rio produces. Backing is a pretty simple product, but the Rio backing always looks good and performs well. Got the 20 lb for my 7 wt, which is a bit of overkill for trout, but I use this to also go after smallies and the occasional pike in MN and Canada every so often.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I used this 20lb backing on my 5wt Orvis Clear Water setup. It has performed tremendously. I haven't had any issue of the backing snapping. If you ever had this problem you've hooked into a lunker.

20lbs Ideal for 8 to 10 Weight Rigs

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Most of the time, backing is just a spacer for your reel to take up space and give you better turning radius on reel cranks. Up to 12 lbs backing test is good for trout, but you will want more when you get into salt or bigger freshwater gamefish. 20lbs test is ideal from 8 to 10 weight rigs and then step up to 30lbs test backing once you are at 11 weight and above going for offshore and big inshore fish like tarpon.

    Simple Yet Effective

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have put Rio backing on all of my rods and reels from my 3-6wts in the 20lb. I have never had any issue with breakage and the knots have always held tight to the spool. Also, if you are having issues where your backing meets your fly line, try not to pull extremely tight on the knot, but rather finesse the knot together. Sometimes hammering down on your backing to fy line knot causes the backing to pierce through the gel coating and into the core of the fly line eventually leading to breaks.

    Rio 30lb backing

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this in orange color and put on my Sage spectrum max reel. Looks awesome and takes up the righ amount of space. I havent had a fish take the line out to the backing but i'm sure its strong enough.

    Spend less time reeling

I wish this review as about the huge fish that ripped all the line from my reel so fast it scorched my hand, but the truth is backing is mostly about taking up some space and volume on the arbor so that you can reel in more line with each rotation. Less important with a large-arbor reel, but every bit helps. This spooled and tied great. Up to the job.

      Does it's job!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have a 100 yards of 30 lb orange on my Rapid Ross reel. It fits on the reel with plenty of room for the floating line. It looks good and gives me a lot of confidence that I will have enough line for those big pigs lurking out there who are going to make a run for it.

      Hold it down

Holds the line to your spool just like you need it to! I went with the 30yd option and feel like it's perfect for my 9'5" TFO rod and my Sage 2200 reel. Basic - but you'll want to make sure you can rely on this backing for when that monster finally takes your fly....

        Safety on!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this for my 3 weight Sage 3200 reel. Only needed about 50 yards, then the 80 foot fly line filled the spool. Super easy to know when I am getting close to the end of the fly line with the bright orange color, have NOT had to rely on it yet but glad that it's there.
