For 2017, the Belgian cobble tested and gram-counter approved Helium SL gets some slight tweaks and a new name to usher in the year. The new Helium SLX Road Bike Frameset takes its predecessor's nearly unicorn-like mix of minimal weight, stiff power transfer, and knife-like handling to the proverbial extreme with a few grams of weight savings and claims of even stiffer, snappier control.

The SLX brings back the super light blend of 60, 40, and 30-ton high modulus carbon fiber to create a World Tour worthy frame that efficiently transfers power and a 30 gram weight savings over the SL (for a size medium frame). The front end sees a slightly different curvature at the tube junctions, a small change that Ridley claims boost stiffness by 15% and translates into even snappier, more responsive handling when diving into switchbacks and sprinting towards the finish line.

As with the SL, the SLX features rounded tubing emanating from the seat tube juncture, which slowly becomes box-shaped as it approaches the head tube and bottom bracket junctures. As Ridley puts it, this system creates a clean transition from stiffness to comfort. Supporting this ideology, the rear triangle has been designed with a blend of the two shapes. The asymmetric, flat chainstays provide a stiff platform for power transfer to the rear wheel, while the ultra-thin seatstays create a vertically compliant ride quality without sacrificing rigidity.

    • A featherweight road frameset
    • Race-ready geometry handles technical roads with ease
    • High modulus carbon layup drops grams from the SL
    • Updated headtube junction shape increases stiffness
    • Internal cable routing with molded internal channels for clean install
    • Beefy bottom bracket shell efficiently transfers power
    • Clearance for tires up to 25mm and external rim widths up to 28mm
    • Item #RID005J

    Awesome - Get the bike!

Recently bought this frame and I have had a chance to get in several rides in and I wanted to give a review for this frame.

In short, this frame is just Awesome. It is stiff in the bottom bracket and the head tube which gives the bike awesome handling. I would characterize the bike as a race bike with some endurance nuances. What I mean by this is the frame has a taller headtube to give a bit of comfort if needed, but this is a straight up race bike. Power goes directly from the pedals and no effort is lost. Greipel sprints on this frame so it is stiff enough for us lesser folks :)

I chose to build this bike up with Mavic Cosmic Carbon pro wheels.. They are tubeless and coupled with this frame, the ride is pretty sublime. Before this bike I was running a 2014 Trek Domane with Mercury M5 wheels. I was running 105 / 110 on that bike.. This bike I run at 70 / 75 PSI.. You can imagine how this affects the ride quality... In a very good way!

Honestly, this bike is worth every penny of it's MRSP.. Even more so with the sale that CC is running. This is a pro tour frame people and the price point.. It simply cannot be beat.

Lastly, I want to give a shout out to my guy Kyle Brown. Top notch professional who was nothing but patient and helpful during my bike buying adventure. Basically I bought a full bike and the frame wound up not working.. Had the bike stripped at my LBS and sent the frame back. This frame was sent back via next day air so I could get it built up as quickly as possible. Cannot say enough about the great post sale support from Competitive Cyclist.

I am attaching a bike pic. Not the greatest pic in the world, but wanted give folks an idea of what the Grey looks like built up.

What an awesome frameset Ridley has produced. Finish on the Gray frameset looks stunning in person and gets lots of compliments. I have ridden, and owned just about every super bike you can imagine, and the only thing missing here is the hype. The Ridley will climb, descend, and sprint as well as all the other big name brands out there, and look better doing it. Super straight forward to build without any weird proprietary issues like headset, seat post, bottom bracket, etc. I now have the Helium SLX, and the Noah in the stable from Ridley, and will definitely buy Ridley again.
