Great beginner fly fishing reel!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Just picked up with Redington fly reel after asking some of my more experienced fly fishing friends for recommendations. I'm new to the world of fly fishing and was told this is a great reel for beginners. It'll get you into the fly fishing world and still gives you room to grow with a quality reel and not something you'll want to replace after a couple uses.

I've paired the surge reel with a redington vice rod and have been really happy with the performance so far!

Get's the job done

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a great reel for the price. Perfect for someone learning or those that want a backup reel to leave in their car. Honestly, haven't treated this reel the best - never rinse it after letting it sit in the water, put it away wet into my truck, etc. and it's still kicking like the day I bought it.

Great Value for a newbie like myself

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

As a novice fly fisherman i wanted a reel that wold have a wide range of capabilities, this reel certainly fits the bill. Very happy with my purchase.

Great for the Weekend Warrior

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This reel will get the job done but only for so long. It is great for the beginner angler but with its plastic parts can break easily. Also will bend easily if dropped.

Great for a beginner

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I'm new to fly fishing and this is the reel that was recommended to me by my avid fly fishing friends. The first reason they recommended it to me was the price. The second reason is that they said the disk drag system on this reel is much smoother than on conventional reels. I can't say that I have much experience with other reels to compare it to, but I can attest to the fact that it is smooth like butter!

Great for a beginner

Good Starter Reel

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought this reel for my 2nd year fly fisher. Put the size 3/4 on her 3wt and it works fine. The reel is light and is well built for an entry level reel. Worth the price.

Fantastic Reel. Especially for the price

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I got this off of back country a while ago and i love it. It is a very nice reel, especialy for the price. The 5/6 reel is very light and has very smooth reeling motion. You can adjust the drag to heavy and will make it a lot easier to haul in the fish. I fish trout and salmon and it has no problem. I fish the 5/6 reel and 90ft WF line with about 50-75 yards of backing. There is no way you need the 100 yards, but if you want the fish to run an absurd distance it will fit on the reel.

Fantastic Reel. Especially for the price
