A solid reel at a good value.

Redington made the Rise Series Fly Reel with solid construction that doesn't break the bank or cuts corners on design. Redesigned with a larger arbor, the Rise provides quicker line retrieval, consistent drag, and less line coil. Its cork and Teflon drag system also supplies powerful line control that you can count on while its new hole pattern cuts down on weight.

    • Fully machined aluminum construction enables the Rise to stand up against accidental drops and scrapes
    • Increased arbor design, from mid-sized to large, provides quicker line retrieval, consistent drag, and less line coil
    • New hole pattern helps cut down on weight while still offering a well-balanced reel
    • Improved frame-to-spool overlap prevents line slippage between spool and frame
    • Cork and Teflon drag system supplies powerful line control
    • Larger gripping zone on drag knob for comfort and convenience
    • Low-profile spool release mechanism offers easy removal
    • Includes nylon reel case for protection during transport and storage

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am just getting into fly fishing. With that being said, I have not been at it too long, but from my experience I started with a Pflueger Medalist and upgraded to this. Let me start by saying it feels much better than my medalist. Two different reels but I much prefer the Redington Rise.

The first thing that caught my attention was the glacial blue. At the time I ordered it was out of stock. What I ended up with was the black instead. It is not the type of finish as advertised but it is a great color still.

The second thing I was captivated by was how smooth it operates. Followed by the adjustable drag. It took a bit to break it free but it is easily adjustable. The weight and balance was exceptional and it reels so much faster.

If I could buy it again I would. I highly recommend this reel for anyone looking for a great back up if you have something nicer but for me this one is perfect. Looking forward to getting more when I can spare the money.

Lastly I know this is a product review but I cannot leave a post without stating how truly amazing the customer support is at Backcountry. They have restored my faith in humanity and the fact that there are people out there who still care about sharing their passion and pride in what they do all while achieving and ensuring customer satisfaction . Shout out to Emory Millis for helping me get the right product!

Thanks backcountry! I look forward to doing more business with you soon!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

First off! i bought the blue one, and I haven't actually used the reel yet, i just picked it up for my self as a birthday present and haven't gotten around to getting line put on it but man am i impressed the color is impeccable and mesmerizing, and the reel is self is externally light and just feels amazing i can not wait to take this baby out and see how it handles with a fish! i will make sure to update this review after i have used it and have initial impressions.

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought this as a birthday gift and have feedback to share. "Phenomenal drag system, works great with my 5 weight rod. Super smooth retrieve and well balanced. Highly recommend this based on it performance and price point compared to top of the line reels."

    You Can't Buy Just One

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this reel to go on my Redington Vapen rod. After using it for a few weeks, I ended up buying another reel w/ two additional spools. Quality reel for a great price. Super smooth drag and great quality overall. You won't be disappointed (especially if you get the Glacial color).

    It’s reel good (get it?!)

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Paired it with a Redington Voyant in a 9'5wt. Really smooth reeling, easy to adjust the drag, and very finely machined-- it even has a really nice bluish color I dig a lot. It’s a simple reel, but it does exactly what I need it to. Inexpensive and gets the job done. What more could you ask for?

    Fantastic reel

The rise reel is about as good as it gets for the price point. I put this reel on my Redington Vapen rod and the pairing is unbelievable. The drag on the reel adjusts easily and the spool can be changed within seconds if you plan on carrying multiple fly lines. They’re making it in some pretty cool colors as well!

      Dependable, inexpensive

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am a huge Redington fan. They offer 95-99% of the performance of items that are 2-3x more expensive. This reel is no different. I've got the 5/6, and an extra spool for a sinking line. This reel hasn't failed me yet, from trout on larger western rivers to smallmouth bass on lakes.

      Rise and shine

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

A great reel, beatufully crafted, great drag, good capacity. A great mate to my Vapen black, shown here out chasing stripers last week. I'd suggest this to anyone looking for a high end reel to mate with a Redington rod!

      Rise and shine

      Color not even close

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

was pretty stoked about picking up this real at such a good price. But upon unboxing it I found the Dark charcoal to be more of a metallic purple... as well as the very exposed mechanism I had to return it.

Great price for a great reel.

I love Redington gear. You get the quality and performance of the super high end brands (Hardy, Ross) but with half the cost. The reel is machined alumunim so it wont dent/break when you take a digger walking to your favorite spot. I own this reel in a 4wt and in a 7wt. On the 7 I have one spool with a SA Magnum fly line and one with a SA 200 grain sink line. The spools interchange easily and smoothly and I've never had any issues going from one to the other. The drag system is smooth and catch free and the weight of the reel seems to balance with the rod perfectly. I am very impressed with the look, finish, and feel of the reel as well.

I gave it three stars for really one reason. Price. It is a good reel, but I think you could do better for the money. There really was not much that stood out with this reel that made me fall in love with it. It is well made, holds up to abuse well, and has a decent drag.....but so do a few other reels that you can pick up for a few bucks cheaper, or spend a few bucks more and get something way better. I love the Redington Drift reel, but could pass on this one. If I am dropping $200 on a reel I am gonna save a little bit and grab an Abel Trout/Creek reel for $60 more....made in America.

Probably a redundant question but worth asking anyway. The reel is rated for use in freshwater but I'm primarily a saltwater fisherman. How well would it hold up in harsh saltwater conditions? (I fish the hypersaline waters of the Laguna Madre in South Texas so corrosion resistance is relative)

      Best Answer

Hi Daniel, Most salt water reels are made of anodized aluminum to resist corrosion from the salt. Where this reel is made of just aluminum, you'll want to wash it in fresh water after each use to help extend the lifespan of the reel, especially its inner workings.
