Great for starting out

I gifted this rod to my father, but not before taking it for a few test rides. As someone else pointed out the reel does not come prespooled, not a bad thing as you'll need to learn at some point anyway. Straight forward to assemble and packs down nice and light. Right out of the gate this reel and rod combo casts smoothly and handled a few different fly with ease. I would highly recommend this package to anyone looking to start fly fishing.

    Great First Pole

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Had my wife get this for her first fly rod and reel. Went with the 9' 5wt and have taken her to the lower Provo, and to Big Cottonwood Creek. She caught her first Rainbow. It's really light and perfect for her to learn on. For the price, the quality is surprising. The spool is removable if you want to buy more spools.

    Great First Pole

    Great starter outfit

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend. She wanted to get into fly fishing and I decided this was the way to go in a 9ft 5 wt. So far we have only tossed nymph rigs with it, but it handles multiple flies and some weight fairly well. Reel comes pre spooled for left hand retrieve but can be switched to right hand retrieve with the help of a small phillips screw driver.

First time out she caught her first two fish on it.

    Great starter outfit

    On the right

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Path was an easy choice, as the quality and economy of this outfit was a huge appeal. I chose the 8# rod @ 9' with intent of carrying the larger line and potentially a bigger catch. Initially the rod was heavier than anticipated, and I struggled a bit in tuning my technique to this set up which in effect made for some awkward presentations. But the responsiveness of the package was very progressive and has been a welcome addition with it's simplicity and resilience. As noted by others the line provided is a median point to start from, and gives users an opportunity to learn the sport a bit more in depth as they tune their set up. This combo is a great foundation to start from, and a welcome addition to seasoned anglers looking for a modest travel set.

    Great beginner rod

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I own the 5 wt 9' Redington Path. I love the length and weight combination - a great all-around rod set-up. I would, however, recommend a different line than the one used (Rio Mainstream). I didn't notice how big of a difference the line made until I used some Rio Gold 5wt. World of a difference.

Great package for a beginner, though - and you really can't beat the price of it.

    Great Product!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Purchased this gift for my Grandfather who has had years of experience in the rivers. He was so impressed with this product and uses it as his primary rod now. Thank you BC for helping me get his favorite Father's Day gift to date!

    Five Stars

When I first received the product I was slightly disappointed because the reel was not pre-spooled, as advertised in the description, but I contacted customer service and they took care of me. I would highly recommend the product! Redington is a phenomenal brand. Thank you Backcountry!

This is the Path you want to take!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

So I'm a total newb to fishing and was recommend this Combo as a starter. I LOVE IT. I'm obsessed with catching fish! It conveniently comes with rod, reel, line and LEADER! Assembly is super easy and it comes in a variety of lengths and weights so you are not restricted to what type of fishing you want to start off with. I would highly recommend this for all beginner to intermediate fishers. It seriously is the best bang for your buck!

      Rad Rod

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great beginning rod package! There's decent action to the rod and the whole thing packs down small. All you need is some flies and tippet to get out on the water. I assume that if I keep my fishing game up, then I'll move on to a more sophisticated rod/reel, but for now this seems to do the trick. Plus, look at all the fish I'm catching!

      Rad Rod

Really solid kit for the price

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Really solid kit for the price. Casts well in still conditions. Loads quickly. Rod/reel case is of good quality. No backing on line but that's a cheap and easy fix. Four-piece breaks down small for travel. Great setup for beginners.
