    Nucleus Hooded Fleece Jacket

Your ultralight, ultra-mobile alpine shell is only as good as the layers underneath it. Don't get held back by uncomfortable and restricting midlayers—grab the Rab Nucleus Hooded Fleece Jacket and get stretchy performance and trusted warmth for all of your cold-weather pursuits. Thermic stretch mid-weight fleece offers you comfortable warmth and unencumbered movement, so you can climb on into the fall then suit up for backcountry touring trips in the winter. The oval-grid fleece backing allows the Nucleus to wick moisture and release heat more effectively, giving you reliable performance during more high-output pursuits. The under-helmet hood is there when you need it to be on windy summits and cold resort days, so even your head can enjoy the warmth of this versatile fleece.

High Quality Piece - runs large

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 168lbs

I tried the Rab Nucleus and Nexus jacket. They use the same fabric but thinner for the Nexus. Both have great zippers. The fit on them is very different. The Nexus is super tight with more stretch and the Nucleus is sized much larger. 99% of the time I wear a medium but found the Nucleus a bit too bulky and long especially in the arms (I am a tall/skinny guy). I went with the Nexus in the large so I could layer over casual wear. Both jackets have a very sharp look. One other thing to note is the Dark Footprint color is a brown color – check the Rab website for a picture.

I got nexus , medium and found it a little large(. I am 165cm, chest 38 inches. ) so, Just order nucleus , but small instead after I saw your comment that nucleus is having much larger fit. Hope it will fit me better. Any suggestion on size small I ordered for nucleus

Impressive piece. Hood is pretty large.

I bought this as a ski layer, and to wear around town.

I was looking for something similar to a Patagonia R1, but that could also be worn around town. While the R1 is probably a bit warmer than the Nucleus, it is purely a technical piece, and you look pretty silly wearing it out as your outer layer if you go to a restaurant or run errands after skiing. The Nucleus grid-fleece on the inside, but is nice and smooth on the outside, making it nice enough to wear to work or restaurants.

With grid fleece, the benefit is breathability, but the downside is that it's not as warm as non-grid fleece, and while it's marketed as being a 'midweight' fleece, it is pretty light, and seems a bit thinner than the R1.

My main gripe is that the hood is quite large, to the point where I found it to be a nuisance when wearing it as a layer when skiing. I ended up returning it and getting the non-hooded version. I also tried the pullover version, which I found to have a bit of a tighter fit, and the grid material made it hard to get on/off, as it stuck to my base layer. I don't have that issue with the full-zip version.

Overall, after trying out several alternatives to the Patagonia R1, I landed on this and think it might be the best comparable piece out there. It's comfortable, looks good, the arms have pretty good amount of stretch, and its is pretty warm.

    Phenomenal gear

I'm a landscape photographer based in Richmond, Va. and love my hiking/camping photography trips especially when the weather turns. This hoodie fits so well, stretches where it counts during movement and is perfect for a mid layer underneath that needed down during the colder months. I love Rabs fit. I'm an athletic build and work out (but not bulky) and the Med size is perfect. Can't go wrong with this hoodie in autumn, winter (midlayer) and early spring for hikes/wild camping or anything outdoors for that matter.

      Midweight and warm

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Size Bought: XL
      • Height: 6'3"
      • Weight: 210lbs

This hoody rules. Can wear it as a mid layer or super comfortable for a base layer. So warm and so breathable. Guess it's that grid fleece for you.

Hood fits under my helmet so I don't need to carry a balaclava around (don't like having things in my pockets).

      Perfect midlayer
