This jacket is worth every penny

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 114lbs

We were headed to Alaska in February, and I am the type who is always cold but loves to be outside. I was worried my ski jacket, waterproof and warm as it is, just wouldn't cut it. I read all the reviews here and on other sites and decided to put the money down for 800 fill. This jacket ticks all the boxes: incredibly warm, comfortable, light, not too long (hip length) so perfect for winter activities, extremely water resistant (I was in a snow storm outside for two hours dog sledding and not wet inside at all. Dries super quick too); helmet compatible down hood (I use this hood instead of a hat now to avoid hat hair); sleek technical details and beautiful color (I got blueprint).
Seriously the only thing that is not perfect is that the arms are puffier than I like, so I look buff. But the cut on the body is nice and formfitting.
If you need warm and practicality this si your jacket.
And one more thing, I had sled puppies jumping all over my jacket and miraculously, the fabric did not tear.

Like a big warm hug from a sleeping bag!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

After 10 winters living in Jackson, Wyoming, I finally decided that I was tired of being cold, so I purchased this jacket this winter. It fits extremely well and the materials are very high quality. The down is very puffy and it's super warm. I like Rab's attention to detail-- the hood is well fitted and has a piece of something stiff in it so that it stays up and doesn't flop. I ordered a medium and it fits just right-- I can put a sweater or two underneath and it's a little snug, or I can wear it with just a long underwear top and it's got a little more space. Arms are plenty long, and the color is nice. I'm very pleased!

    Perfect Ice Climbing Belay Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 140lbs

I specifically bought this jacket for ice climbing belaying this winter. I have not yet gotten to wear it in temperatures that cold yet, but I have worn this jacket in temps around the 40s, and it keeps me so warm. This jacket is amazing! It feels like you are wearing a super cozy sleeping bag.

This fits true to size. However, I sized up to a large since, I am planning on wearing over the rest of my ice climbing layers. I tried on both the M and L. If I were only going to wear this over 1 layer, then I would have stayed at my normal size M. If you keep this jacket true to size, then it does seem to look somewhat form-fitting. However, sizing up does make me somewhat resemble a marshmellow. But I would much rather stay warm, so it doesn't bother me.

My favorite thing about this jacket is that the jacket covers your bum and has a two-way zipper. The zipper is nice and smooth. The material seems to be pretty durable (I also have Patagonia's Fitz Roy jacket, and I am also afraid that the jacket is going to rip if it gets caught on anything).

This is my first piece of clothing by Rab, but I have been thoroughly impressed so far. I really like how Rab focuses on mountaineering-specific clothing, as I feel that is something lacking in clothing lines from most other companies.

    Winter Camping? YES PLEASE!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size
    • Height: 6'2"
    • Weight: 150lbs

Got this as a Christmas gift for my partner. For a long time, she said she would go winter camping with me once she gets better cold weather gear- so instead of waiting for her to get it, I got it for her along with the Rab 8000 Exped Mitts. This is what she has to say about the jacket:
"I love it. I wore the North Face version of this for years and never felt even as close to as warm as I do in this cloud. It's a true puffy!"
My partner is 5'4" and 150 and she is happy with the Medium.

    Looks very toasty!

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 136lbs

I have yet to try it in the cold but you can tell by the quality and the fabric of it that this jacket is going to be super comfy at low temperature (-20-30 C). The zipper is a little difficult (even for a lefty) it just requiers a little practice before you head out in the cold. The jacket is a long built and cover a good part of my "derriere". The armpits and sleeves are also widely built so the freedom of mouvement is excellent. The hood is very deep and super well insulate. With the size small I can wear a merino base layer and a polar tech layer. Seems to have everything I was looking for. It's a bit heavy but I don't mind as long as it keeps me toasty.

I'm often between size small and medium and I'm glad I took the small. Medium would have been too bulky.

I'm going to try it soon during a winter camping trip around Yosemite and for some hiking in the Adirondack, I will post an update.

    Looks very toasty!

Best warm coat for the price!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    • Size Bought: small
    • Height: 5'3"
    • Weight: 125lbs

I've been trying to help my girlfriend find a warm winter coat for several months. I first bought her this coat in black and turquoise and she loves it!
She wanted a coat that was as warm as possible for the weight for the best price. This seems to be it. She has used it several times winter hiking and wears it on the way down. Usually (previous to said coat) she freezes, shaking and whining the whole way down because she's so cold. The times she's worn this one on the way down, she says she's actually been comfortable and warm so win for both of us! It looks sleek, lightweight and for the price point, she's been very happy.

    Works for me!

I also used this jacket to summit Mt. Kili August 2017. I did purchase a M as I was concerned w/ the amount of layers on summit night - even now, I don't feel it is to big. I was fortunate that the temps were not sub-zero. It was close to 20 degrees +/- with slight winds. I also used the jacket at a football game - where none movement make you colder. I was fine - can't wait to try it out shoveling snow this winter. Also, love the color available when I purchased the jacket!

    Works for me!

Purchased same coat 5 years later

LOVE this coat, I purchased the same thing again after thrashing my first one from 5 years ago. (Now I have the old one to use as a camping puffy coat!). Fits beautifully and is slim even though it is extra warm. Back side is a bit longer which I love. I'm 5'6- 120 lbs and the XS fits perfectly. (I'm also small on top)

      Warm in Sub Zero Temps

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Small
      • Height: 5'7"
      • Weight: 128lbs

I'll admit, this jacket was the outermost layer of my 6 layers, but I think it played the most integral part in keeping me warm in sub zero temps summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro. I actually bought this jacket because I read a review of how one woman was going to use it on Kili, and on our summit morning, I saw two other ladies wearing the exact same jacket! Needless to say, it was the absolute best purchase I could have made. We had sustained winds of over 20mph for the entire 12 hours that we were exposed, and I never felt cold in my core. I always run cold, so I am super impressed. If only they could make gloves and socks with the same warmth.

My other layers were: IB tee, IB midweight base layer, R1 hoody, Arcteryx LT down vest, Marmot precip jacket and this RAB. (Basically everything I traveled with and then this on top)

      Expedition warmth with compressibility

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size

I was searching for a jacket to use for multi- day mountaineering and backcountry skiing. I needed a jacket I could throw on and instantly be warm when stopping after heavy exertion in extreme conditions. Yet it needed to be compressible enough to be practical packing. I chose this jacket over the MH Phantom, Patagonia Fitz Roy due to thickness and warmth of the jacket and overall better fit.

      Great Outdoors Coat

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

      • Height: 5'9"
      • Weight: 130lbs

And why else would you need a coat but to be outside in the cold? I live in the upper peninsula of Michigan and wanted a coat that was extremely warm without having to walk around in a sleeping bag or constrict my movement. No, you wont be able to see your waist perfectly while wearing this coat as some have pointed out, but it is actually cut very well. The midsection is relatively fitted, and the shoulders are cut to allow for a range of whirling arm movements without looking boxy. I am 5'9 and 130 pounds and it is extremely rare that a coat fits so well while being long enough in the arms. I repeat, THIS HAS GREAT ARMS! It also dips to cover the butt. Not an inch of midriff will be exposed. A stiff-rimmed, insulated hood with great zippers and neck coverage round out the long list of features on this coat. As always, Backcountry was great with this order, allowing me to send my medium back for a small coat, which fit great.

      Neutrino Rab coat for women

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: small
      • Height: 5'5"
      • Weight: 120lbs

This coat is VERY warm and feels light so you don't get overheated when you go from outside to inside and you can compress it into your bag. Only limitation is it does not look very fitted or feminine. I look like a puffy marshmellow in it, however it is functional.

      Awesome Jacket

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought this for my wife for our trip to Iceland. I was a little annoyed at first because of the price tag compared to other jackets, but I bought her a bunch of different jackets and this one was by far her favorite. Out of the box you can tell this is a very high quality down coat and it has a lot of neat little features such as hood Velcro straps, wire brimmed hood which was great for blocking wind and snow, 2 way zipper, and plenty of pockets. Temps in Iceland ranged from low 20's to upper 30's but the wind was oppressive (It literally felt like you were going to get blown down the street). This jacket not only kept her warm, but also she did not complain at all about any cold spots with the wind. It also has great weather resistance, the pertex shell kept all the rain, sleet, and snow off the down. You really can't go wrong with this and its an item she reaches for constantly when going out in the cold.

Bought for my wife, she loves it

We shopped hard for a high-quality, warm down garment for my wife to wear to Everest base camp and on Kili. In fact, we ordered and tried about 10 different down coats, looking for the right balance of warmth and weight, features, length, etc. This one was just right - long in the back, and plenty of down in the body and hood, for someone who runs cold. Have been testing it in DC during the recent cold spells (teens, even single digits) and very happy so far. She is 5'4" and 120, bought a medium and can wear layers underneath.

      KEEPS MY WIFE HAPPY!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size

I've owned the Men's version of the jacket for one year and got the women's version for the wifey this year.....now she has stop telling me how cold she is!! she loves it!

This jacket fits athletic/skinny people well, with great range of motion and comfort!

It insulates excellently!! Nice adjustable hood.

Sweet colors- the purple is awesome!

We stay warm in all conditions: from 50 down to 0 degrees

When worn with a t-shirt underneath, its comfortable at 60 degrees until you start producing heat, which will be contained and make you hot.

When layered with a long sleeve shirt, and a vest underneath, 10 degrees is comfortable.

The jacket is our primary piece during the cold months due to its awesome versatility.

It is holding up well to the wearing I've put it though, does not tear easily, tough material. (still soft to the touch!)

      HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

      Best coat ever

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large

I love this coat. I live in Michigan and lived thru last winter's never ending polar vortex. I bought this coat in a medium. I am 5'2 130 lbs. I like my coats a bit big and sometime am a large but this fit perfectly. I have broad swimmer shoulders and the arms to match. There is plenty of room in this coat. It is so warm. The pockets are great, big and warm. The hood is nice and warm! The inside lining is so soft and slippery, never getting stuck on your clothes. It is a big puffy coat. I am sure it makes me look big... but I don't care. It is awesome. Covers my butt too!

Oh and I have not lost any down either...

      Love it!

Yet another item that accompanied me on my 6 month adventure through South America this year! From Patagonia to the northern tip of the Andes in Peru this jacket kept me warm on the coldest days/nights. I used it on multi pitch climbs for belaying. I made the mistake of putting it on before a down climb and scraped it on a piece of really sharp granite and it ripped a tiny bit, patched it up and it's fine now. I also used it on several high altitude climbs in Bolivia (Huayna Potosi 6000+ m) it was perfect for that, not too hot and not too cold all the way at 6000 m. It was comfortable even with everything else that I had on, harness, ropes etc. I'm 5'3" and 110 lbs and I bought the small. I wouldn't have been able to layer underneath an extra small.

Staying warm in Hatun Machay, Peru!

      Love it!

      Great for Colorado Winters!

I've worn this every day for the past 5 months. Pros: It's super warm with a great, flattering, feminine fit. It's long enough in the back to cover your butt, so I was comfortable and warm wearing it with just leggings to and from work at the mountain. Cons: I skied in it a couple of times, but it's really too warm for me on the spicier runs, and none of my shells fit over it. Also, it spits out feathers like I've never seen. Because of the amount of down it's losing, I anticipate it being less warm a couple of winters from now. But overall, it's a staple for me several months out of the year.

        love it

i choose size s and my husband choose size M,true to size. we wore this jacket skiing , climb snow mountain and ice climbing. it always keep us warm. this down jacket is lightweight, effective in keeping us warm. we love it.

        Too cold?!? Too cold?!?

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times
        • Fit: True to size

I wore this jacket skiing at 10 F and had so many drafts coming in everywhere that I froze. Granted I didn't wear a shell but I was not warm at all. The arms are cut wide contributing to the Michelin look. Cute color (granite) and excellent feather "control" ie none poke out ever but overall a disappointing jacket. Unfortunate as I was expecting my warmest ski experience ever but this didn't deliver.
