    Microlight Down Vest

Keep your core toasty with the Rab Microlight Down Vest whether you're belaying during an alpine ascent, trekking across a chilly landscape, or skiing on a frigid powder day.  Insulated with 750-fill European goose down, the Microlight is remarkably warm given how incredibly lightweight it is. The down is also hydrophobic so it doesn't get soggy and lose its effectiveness in wet weather. Pertex Microlight fabric is extremely lightweight and surprisingly durable so you don't have to worry about ruining it when it snags on a branch.

It's also highly packable and has a slim fit so it doesn't take up a ton of space in your pack or feel bulky when you wear it under a technical shell. The armholes are bound with Lycra to keep cold wind out when you reach the top of the mountain, and its hem has a drawcord so you can tighten it to keep out chilly gusts. The vest's chest pocket doubles as a stuff sack so you can take this vest with you anywhere without taking up much space.

    Great vest for winter activities

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 160lbs

This is a great vest because it can be worn on its own on the warmer winter days or is not super bulky so it can be worn under a jacket for an extra layer during the colder winter days. Sometimes in order for down vests to be warm they need to be really puffy and that is not the case with this particular vest. I would highly recommend.

    The perfect everyday vest

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 130lbs

My wife needed something for everyday that will keep her warm while cross country skiing but also looks great running errands on an early spring day. This vest is just what she needed. It layers really well with zip-up hoodies and cowl neck sweaters. This vest was her favorite compared to other similar vests because of the seamless arm holes.

    'Microlight' is Right

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Extra Small
    • Height: 5'5"
    • Weight: 110lbs

Sending out a big THANK YOU to and Rab for selecting me to review this vest. I'm grateful to be able to be a part of the growing community!

    Height: 5' 4.75"
    Weight: ~110 lbs.
    Bra Size: ~34AA-A

I have this vest in a US extra small (UK 8) in "Twilight". It's a beautiful BRIGHT pink on the inside! The zipper looks slightly light purple/grey in person.

FIT & SIZING: Besides having a little extra room in the chest (see my bra size for reference), the fit on this vest is perfect for me. Other brands of vests I've tried on don't feel snug, they kind of feel like they hang off my shoulders. This vest has a slim fit and isn't boxy whatsoever. It feels like the patterns were cut according to my body. It moves with me and even when I raise my arms up above my head, I get very little movement in the vest--it stays put. Because it is 'slim fit', it nicely follows the curves of my body rather than hangs away from them. I do feel the zipper push against my neck when I bend my head down all the way, but the neck is plenty wide and doesn't feel restricting otherwise, nor do the armpits or shoulders. It doesn't stretch, but the way it's constructed shows that it's really meant for movement, which I think is very hard to find in down products. Finally, the length is great--no midriff peaking through no matter how I move.

FIT CONS: For me, the one major con about this vest is the front hand pockets. (Though I'd give it a 4.5/5 instead of a 4/5 if I could.) I love me some pockets, both for sticking my hands in 'em and for storing my phone, keys, and wallet. But these pockets run far too close to the center of my body, forcing my hands to be bent downward, slightly training my wrists. I don't have large hands, either. Because of this, I can't comfortably use the pockets for my hands, but only for storage of other things. The good thing is, how much time you spend with your hands in your pockets when you're out hiking, climbing, or skiing probably runs close to zero-ish minutes. But as apres-ski hand pockets, these don't quite cut it. They would probably need to be a bit bigger and moved an extra 2-3 inches out to the sides to be comfortable for my hands. I suppose a size up *might* solve this problem, but everywhere else the fit is great.

PERFORMANCE: In cold weather, this vest performs very well. I've been in below freezing temperatures for the past week and haven't gotten to wear it outside on its own over a long-sleeve shirt, but have instead worn it, plus a base tank top and a long-sleeve tee, under a down jacket in 10-15 F degree weather. It brings up the warmth level significantly, to a point where even just walking with it on makes me sweat a little. I think it would be the perfect layer for climbing outside in cold temps when you don't want to sacrifice the movement in the arm area, and a great layer for hiking that you can take off once you get warm (or put it on if you get cold)--just pack it down and throw a carabiner on it to attach it to your pack. The pack down time is also minimal because it doesn't have to be squeezed into the pocket like crazy; it fits quite nicely.

QUALITY: The seam and seam patterns, nylon, Pertex microlight fabric, etc., all look and feel exceptionally well-made and well-constructed. The zippers are effortless, and the double cinch cords at the bottom are awesome, and make the vest stay perfectly put. One of the amazing things I've noticed is that there are hardly any feathers coming out (unlike typical new down products). This vest has only one or two escapees to speak of so far, and I've worn it everyday for a week. But only time can tell, and I will update as necessary. Finally, as they promise, the vest truly does feel incredibly light--the weight to warmth ratio is the most impressive thing to me about this vest.

BOTTOM LINE: If you're looking for a lightweight down vest to wear for various cold/cool-weather activities (or for simply walking the dog), this would do the job VERY well. It'll definitely be one of my go-to pieces this spring and fall.
