I love this jacket as a rain jacket. I have written a previous review, and I bought a 2nd one of these after I lost the first one. Last week while hiking in Finland, I lost the 2nd one. One of the things I loved about this jacket is that it stores inside a small pocket, and it has a loop that you can hook a D-ring through and hook it to a belt loop, or a harness point on a backpack. Thats where I had it last week, connected to my backpack, when the nylon in the loop gave way and the jacket fell too far down the side of the trail for me to be able to go get it. $130 down the drain. Maybe some other lucky hiker will find it. I may buy an other, but I will not count on that loop to hold out. I did get 2 years of good use out of it, but I wish it had not broken

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Fit: Runs small
Height: 6' 2"
Weight: 170 lbs
Size Purchased: 33/34 and 34/34

I really wanted these pants. I tried this exact model on in a retail store who only had even sizes (32,34,36). I wear a 33, and in the store, the 32 was too tight as I suspected. So, I ordered 2 pairs from Backcountry, one in 33/34 and one in 34/34 to be safe. The 33's are close to an inch too small. I dont have a pair of 32's to compare them to, but the pair in the store could not have been much tighter than these. I will keep the 34, even though they are a tad too large. If I tuck 2 shirts into my waist, then I can skip a belt, but since I intend to wear these in the summer, I will probably have to wear a belt. The make and quality seem great on these, I just wish the fit was more consistent. I get that different manufacturers can have different cuts, and even the same manufacturer might not be consistent between different styles, but these are 2 pairs of the exact same make/model, only different in color, and the 33 is an inch too small, and the 34 is 1/2 inch too big... I know the 33 runs small. Maybe the 34 is running small too, just not small enough to be a real 33.

I bought this to replace a light weight Marmot jacket that I lost on vacation. The original jacket was bought in haste and was really not what I was looking for, but as I got to use it more and more, it became a critical item for me to have with me on both outdoor adventures and business trips. It was great to have in case the plane got too cold, or the weather where ever I was suddently turned rainy or windy. The new jacket has all the features of the old one, plus zippered pockets and a ear-phone slot so you can keep an ipod in the chest pocket but have the ear phone cord come out inside the jacket and under your collar. This jacket also has a higher zip collar than the original which keeps my neck warmer in stiff winds. The jacket is incredibly light, yet does a good job of fending off wind and water, though given enough of a down-pour, your are eventually going to get wet in this. I keep an outdoor research rain shell on hand for really bad weather, but this jacket gets worn 90% of the time, and I love that it has a lightweight lining which helps keep the wet shell off your skin, yet vents really well.

As others have noted, its got a tight fit. I am tall but skinny, and if you read the size charts, I would normally wear a medium, but the large fits me, and it fits fairly tightly. I can wear a fleece or a shirt under it, but you could not wear a heavy sweater without looking like you had been shrink-wrapped. If you like loose fitting garb, go a size or 2 larger than you normally wear. I like it this way because If things get really cold or really wet, I will put this under the other shell I might be wearing, and I like that it fits like a nice shirt.

I'm tempted to order a 2nd once in case I am stupid enough to loose this one like I did the last one.

I think one of the reviewers here noted this, but it would have been a better design if the "pens & pencils" organizing pocket was the one furthest away from your back, rather than the 2nd farthest away. I also think the shoulder straps could stand a little more padding, but I totally fill this up with heavy stuff. 15" macbook Pro, iPad, Digital SLR with heavy glass lens, rain jacket and rain pants, medicines, fleece, iPod, keys, travel documents... It holds a ton, and its well designed. I love the dedicated laptop compartment, which allowed me to drop a padded laptop case (and the pound of weight it added). The back is stiff and well padded, so it’s as close to perfect as I have managed to find. The price is pretty steep for a travel backpack, but I am happy that I bought it.

I love this jacket. It folds up into an internal pocket, and is perfect for stuffing in your backpack when you are out hiking or walking the town. I have been caught in a sudden rain, and was able to grab it out of my pack and unfold the jacket, and get it on before getting too wet. The hood has a stiff brim of sorts that keep the hood forward and keeps your face dry. It works well as a wind shell over a fleece too. I like the blue color, and my only regret is that I did not have one of these with me on the last 4 or 5 years of business travel. It allows me to head out with protection, but not sacrifice 1/2 my backpack to the rooom some jackets, and it does not add much to the weigh I have to lug around.

Perfect for putting in a ruck sack when you want to hike. As others said, they are about the size of a large apple, but weigh less, when in the stuff sack. I travel on business for 2 weeks at at time, and like to be able to hike or sightsee on the weekends, but the weather in Europe does not always cooperate. I have only used them once, but they kept my jeans from getting wet during a bit of rain. I ordered L, but exchanged them for XL. If you want them to fit over a pants and belt, so you might one 1 size bigger than the chart says you need. Just incredible to get rain protection in such a light small package.
