Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Bought this for my 11 year old grandson to carry on a multi-day, hut-to-hut hike in New Hampshire's White Mountains. He has an Ace 48, but I did not want him carrying that much weight due to the challenging terrain.
This pack was the right choice and worked out well, but the pack needs a couple of refinements.
As in the earlier review, 'hydration compatable' does not clearly define the capability of this pack. Yes, it does have a seperate compartment into which the hydration bladder can be placed. But, as noted, it does not have any clip from which to hang the bladder, nor an exit that will accommodate the byte valve and cover (the ipod headphone opening did serve the purpose, however). The lack of a clip allows the bladder to slide down to the bottom of the compartment, impacting the main storage compartment space.
Also, the pack needs a rain cover - something I overlooked - but that became clear when we were hiking an exposed section of trail in a windy, driving rain. While it didn't soak up a lot of water, it appears to have some type of DWR coating, some of the contents in a stuff sack inside the pack were damp.
Also, the pull on the bungee gave way on one side on the first hard tug.
On the plus side, this pack was the right choice for this particular trip. It fit and carried well - he is 4'6" and 85 pounds - and weighed in at between 10 and 12 pounds.
It held the following:
a complete set of raingear (jacker, pants and gaiters)
cold weather gear (hat, liner gloves, mittens, down sweater, fleece, UA underwear tops & bottoms)
complete change of clothing (pants, shirt, socks, underwear)
snacks for 3 days
personal hygiene items
1 L hydration bladder and 20oz bottle
small digital camera, ipod, and compass.
As with most things Osprey, this was a nice piece of gear and I would give it 4 or 5 stars with just a few improvements.
