After reading a blog post at a business website written by a frequent traveler who uses a backpack as his only luggage on business trips, I went looking for a backpack that would allow me to do just that while also meeting my needs for a two-week vacation in Hawaii.
I have to admit, I was initially nervous about my purchase. It seemed a bit large to use as a carry-on bag in an airplane, and technically it is a little longer than allowed. (It fit well in the overhead compartment on the flight from LAX to Ohau, but I had to turn it sideways on the island hopping flights in the smaller jets.)
It worked like a charm. I was able to carry all my electronics (ipad, keyboard, iphone and accessories) as well as some notebooks, pens, etc. in the outer pocket, and I had plenty of room in the main pocket for my outerwear.
It also worked great for the daily hiking treks I took with my family of four on the various islands. We were able to get all our daily provisions in the backpack as well as swimwear and towels for our stops at beaches and other swimming holes.
Because of my destination and the length of my trip, I packed a suitcase along with my Kelty Redwing Backpack this time, but I'm definitely going to try to get by with using the backpacky as my only luggage on my next business trip.
