Zachary Cox's Bio

Hello! My name is Zachary but I do prefer Zack. I'm originally from Boise, Idaho and yes I ate a lot of potatoes growing up. I moved to Utah to attend school at BYU in Provo, Utah where I studied Neuroscience and Entrepreneurship. After 4 years I transferred to the University of Utah to study Human Factors Psychology and Product Design, but enough on the boring stuff.
I've always loved spending as much time outdoors and in nature as possible. I played a lot of soccer and golf growing up to get my sports fix, but spent a good amount of time hiking, backpacking, snowmobiling, fishing, climbing, and snowboarding. Since moving to Utah about 10 years ago, I picked up skiing, mountaineering, trail running and bouldering. I may have a slight addiction to the outdoors so I try and enjoy them in as many different ways as possible. My sign is Cancer, my favorite color is blue and my favorite movie right now is Meru. If I had to choose one activity I enjoy the most, it would definitely be ski mountaineering.

........I can't stop buying these sunglasses! Haha I just picked up another pair against my better judgement. I will say the Chromapop lenses combined with Polarization is a game changer. Chromapop makes the colors just jump out at you and the polarization will prevent glare. If you have any questions at all, just let me know!

I loved the flavors in this Pad Thai meal from Good To-Go. The first time I had this meal was on a backpacking trip to Kings Peak here in the Uinta Mountain Range of Utah. We had dragged ourselves into camp around 11 PM and I was ravenous! I inhaled the Pad Thai as I found I just couldn't stop myself haha it was so tasty. Good To-Go is very conscious of the ingredients they use and make these meals as healthy as possible. Great ingredients + Delicious Flavors = One Happy Camper : )

I snagged a couple of these Good To-Go meals for a backpacking trip to Kings Peak here in the Uinta Mountain Range of Utah. I loved them! Really tasty flavors and healthier ingredients are what set Good To-Go meals apart from some others for me. I'll definitely be taking more of their meals on future adventures : )

I picked up a Barebones Pulaski a bit earlier this summer and it has come on every camping trip with me since. All materials used are high quality and durable, including the leather cover that is included. I hiked into the Uinta Mountains here in Utah earlier this summer with it strapped to my back. It's a bit on the heavy side for backpacking, but I loved it so much I couldn't leave it behind. Barebones also makes awesome machetes, saws, etc. that are just as high quality as their Pulaski Axe. I highly recommend Barebones to any adventurer!

I was able to do some camping and backpacking in Havasupai earlier this year and got a little more sun than I would have liked. So I picked up one of these Prana sun hoodies and right after I returned and have used it all summer long. I love it! I went with the Large size and it fit so well. Loose enough that I could wear another shirt underneath, but not too baggy. I'm not a huge fan of sun screen myself so this was an excellent discovery : )

I've had the chance over the past couple weeks to try this new shirt from Basin and Range. Named after a local river here in Utah, it would definitely be a great shirt to wear when you're on the water. Very light-weight, quick-drying and breath-able, this shirt was a great choice to wear while hiking around the Wasatch Mountains. As I said, I'm not an angler but with the larger chest pockets and a nifty sewn-in loop to hang sunglasses, forceps, etc. it would be a great shirt for any angler. And I definitely recommend it for anybody that is looking for a great long-sleeve shirt to wear during the summer to keep the sun off of you and keep you a bit cooler at the same time. It would be a great shirt for any activity. If you don't like rubbing sun screen on your skin every 40 minutes after it wears off, then get this shirt! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions on this shirt as well as any other gear and apparel : )

With all the great options as far as durable and weather resistant duffel bags, it can be difficult to make a choice. I have similar duffels from other brands and what I can say is I love my Marmot Long Haulers. I bought a few in different sizes because I loved the first one I bought so much. I was initially just looking for a smaller duffel that I could keep in my car to hold any active clothes, shoes, etc. that I would need for the day. Whether it was trail running, climbing or mountain biking, I wanted something to hold those active clothes and shoes (possibly smelly haha), instead of everything just being thrown in my car. I ordered the Small size (38L) and it is a perfect size! One thing I like about these duffels compared to others is the outside pocket on the top of the duffel (when wearing it like a backpack). This is a good size to hold a pair of shoes, especially if they are muddy/wet as it is separate from the main compartment. I have size 12 feet and sometimes I can't close the zipper over my shoes when I put them in that top pocket, but with the larger sizes I don't have this problem. Just with the Small size.
I just used the Large size duffel (75L) to travel to Portland for some ski mountaineering on Mount Hood. I was able to fit everything I needed for the trip, except for a couple ice axes and some avy gear which I just threw in with my skis in my ski bag.

I was shopping around for a great travel/gear duffel and found the Marmot Long Hauler. I loved the style and the features so much I decided to pick up a couple of them. Then I saw the Mini Hauler and said why not?! It's just as cool looking as the bigger ones, but in a mini version!
I found it has a large enough volume to carry anything I need for travel, as far as personal hygiene, with room to spare. There are two zippered pockets inside to hold smaller valuables, one of which has a PU coating over it, which makes the pocket fairly waterproof.

Awesome Shirt From OR

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size

Weight: 190 lbs

A couple weeks ago Leta, our stellar rep from Outdoor Research stopped by the office to hold a clinic about their new apparel and accessories for this year. She brought a sample of the Astroman shirt for us to see and I ordered one right after the clinic. The material feels so nice next-to-skin and it is very light and breathable. Leta told us the idea for this shirt came from one of their trad climbing athletes as he wanted a long-sleeve shirt that would be breathable, moisture wicking, and provide UPF protection from the Sun. Debut: The Astroman.
One really nice feature on this shirt is the collar can be flipped up, creating a 360 degree covering for your neck. It's a great built-in feature that can come in handy whether you're climbing a long route in the afternoon Sun or getting in a quick hike after work. I've worn the shirt in 75 degree weather, hiking around Portland and it felt great.
The fit of the Large on me is just slightly loose, but this helps with breathability so I opted for that fit. I'll be picking up one of the short-sleeve versions as well, I think it would make for a great shirt for the summer as well. Let me know if you have any questions at all : )

A fellow Gearhead here picked up a pair of these and worn them in to work one day. I saw them and had to have a pair! He initially ordered his regular waist size, found them to be a little big, so he exchanged them for the next size down and they fit great. I followed his advice and ordered a pair in 33" waist. They fit perfect! I'm a 34 in most pants (Levi's, RVCA, Black Diamond, Mountain Hardwear, etc.) but these do tend to run about 1 size too big. So, order these Prana Zoggers first of all haha (because they are wonderful pants) and when you do order them, order one size down. If you have any questions at all, just give me a call, shoot me an email, or utilize the chat function and ask for me : )

I initially bought these for use at work, but the microphone just didn't cut it in a noisier environment. They picked up a lot of background noise. BUT! I knew when I purchased these, that wasn't their intended purpose. They are definitely a 5 star set of headphones and I can't fault them or Skullcandy for trying to use them in a way not intended. For what they are built to do, they function superbly. The Bluetooth function works seamlessly so far, the battery life is excellent, the over-the-ear padding is comfy and the controls on the headphones make it really easy to adjust the volume, skip tracks, etc.
I flew to Portland recently and wore them on the plan. I slept like a baby haha.

I love the look of this flask, it has great style for those outdoorsy folk that like to sip on some booze as well. And it is made by Stanley which has been an staple brand in the camping industry for a long time now. This isn't a flask that I would take hiking or mountaineering with me though as it is quite heavy, but is extremely sturdy and well made because of that. I use this as more of a car camping/resort skiing flask and love it. Stanley makes some great flasks that are more lightweight and would be more suited for lightweight backpacking. If you are looking for a sturdy flask that you'll keep for years, then this is the one for you. Let me know if you have any questions : )

Lumens, Lumens, Lumens
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was tired of low-lumen headlamps so I pulled the trigger on the BD Icon and couldn't be happier. This isn't a headlamp designed for trail running as it is a heavier headlamp with the battery pack positioned on the back of your head. You do have the option of using the extra harness system and/or longer power cord which allows you to move the battery pack from your head to either the harness system or a pack/jacket pocket. This would make it more comfortable for trail running.
I've loved the lamp so far and if you haven't used a headlamp from BD yet, their system to change the color/brightness of the lamp is very easy to understand and simple to use. I picked this up specifically for mountaineering purposes and night skiing as having a lot of lumens really comes in handy.
I acutally used this on a ski mountaineering trip to Mount Hood recently and it worked great! I've included a photo so you can get an idea of how it would look That's me in the back with the crazy look in my eyes haha, I was pretty excited to be climbing Hood. I've also embedded a video from the BD website that takes you through all the awesome features on this headlamp.

I mounted these on some Elan Boomerangs for a great pow ski setup. I was only able to ski them a couple times this last winter, but I was very impressed with the performance. Since they are compatible with WTR boots, I used my Scarpa ski mountaineering boots with the Pivots and the setup was great. Let me know if you have any questions at all : )

Awesome pack for backcountry day trips

Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love. This. Pack! Osprey is still doing it right.
I picked up one of these for day long ski tours and it has been perfect. I feel like Osprey paid attention to every detail on this pack. I've used it as a resort pack a few times as well and it worked great, though I felt it was a little overkill size-wise and I could use something smaller.
I just took this with me on a ski mountaineering trip up Mount Hood and it performed really well. Carried the weight of my skis and everything else I had in the pack (extra layers, crampons, goggles, gloves, avy gear, snacks, water, camera, etc.) really well. It also has an insulated zippered sleeve for your hydration tube so it doesn't freeze while your skinning and skiing. You can see the integrated hydration tube sleeve in the picture that I've included.

Pup says she loves it!

Familiarity: I've used it several times

My pups old rain jacket was getting a little ragged so it was time to replace it. I love the quality and attention to detail in Ruffwear's products. One feature I love is how the straps are hidden in slots on the side of the jacket so you get a clean aesthetic but it also prevents your pup from getting tangled in the bushes as the straps are mostly hidden and out of the way.
My pup Addie weighs about 60 pounds, she has somewhat of a barrel chest and shorter legs. After going through the excellent Fit Guide on Ruffwear's website, I chose the Medium size for her and it fits great. Here is a link for the Fit Guide: https://ruffwear.com/pages/fit-guide. Copy and paste that link into your browser, scroll down a little bit and you'll see the Sun Shower Rain Jacket. Let me know if you have any questions at all : )

Jimmy Chin is an incredibly talented climber, skier, alpinist and on top of that he lugs cameras with him everywhere at captures stunning photos and videos. If you haven't had a chance to watch the movie Meru, then I highly recommend you do.
When I saw this hoodie from the North Face, I had to have it! It is made from a fairly lighter material so it would be perfect for those cooler nights in the Spring and Fall. I purchased the Large size and it fits me great. Let me know if you have any questions about the hoodie or Jimmy Chin ; )

These booties are so comfy and very warm. I haven't had a chance to use them winter camping yet, but I have no doubt they would keep my feet warm. I've worn them mostly as slippers around the house over the winter and loved them. If you tend to have cold feet, these Base Camp Booties would be a great solution.
As far as fit goes, I normally wear around an 11.5 in street shoes and the 2XL fits great for me. Let me know if you have any questions : )

I've been a fan of Dakine packs for a long time, but I had never owned a piece of clothing from them until now and I will definitely be buying more. I picked this flannel up with the idea that it would be a great cooler-weather shirt, and indeed it is. It's made from a heavy-weight flannel material so it will probably be a little too warm for the summer, but great for Spring, Fall and winter.
I chose to go with the Medium as I wanted it to fit more trim and I love the fit! It's definitely a trim fit for me in a Medium and I've included my measurements above so you can compare. I have about a 41" chest measurement to give you another reference point. Let me know if you have any questions at all : )

I've come to expect high quality products from Fjallraven and this flannel did not let me down. I bought this as a warmer flannel for the colder months and it worked great. I like the fit on it as well. You can see my height and weight listed above, I purchased a Large and it fits great! I usually wear a t-shirt under my flannels and this fit loose enough to do that comfortably but isn't too big. Fjallraven is a quality brand that I recommend to everyone.
