IMHO, the best gear is the piece that you forget you even have on and don't need to worry about. This is that piece. Warm, breathable and tough. I go thru a ton of long underwear and this stands the test of time. Wore these and a very lightweight summer pant in single degree temps and I was comfy. They also don't get that smell that some synthetic fabric does. Merino for the win! They also dry very quickly.

Really like these pants, feels like a silky and barely noticeable layer of protection. The stretch in the material is awesome and they move with you where ever you go with zero restriction. I got my pants a little too long, that is my bad. Even with the adjustable ankle gusset I still catch them walking pretty frequently. Wore these pants in single degree temps with a pair of long johns and they did great. The windproof really shines when the weather turns nasty. I also wore them in 80°+ temps and they performed equally well. My only gripe is that after wearing these for some time the material is starting to pile around the pockets and front belt loops. The pants also stain pretty easy to food, oil, booze etc. Light weight, you will never know they are there but a bit fragile.

"Why didn't we get this sooner"

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

"Why didn't we get this sooner" was the first thing my wife and I said to each other after using this for the weekend. Spacious, durable, cold and all around awesome. We like going down to Moab and with the ever growing family this cooler was amazing. One block of ice easily lasted 4 days, the veggies, milk, leftovers all stayed cold. The little shelf is also a huge help for keeping everything organized. We also did some car camping in bear country and it was nice just to leave this out and lock it. When we got home, the drain made it super simple to get the melted liquid out and give it a quick scrub/dry.

This layer defies logic. I wear it in the winter when its cold, I wear it summer nights when its cool and everywhere in between. I am on my second one because I literally wear it every single day. My wife jokes that it is the one of the first things I put on and the last to come off. The stretch panels on the side are great and really help it regulate temperature. The pockets are placed perfectly and the inside pocket is good for chapstick, CC, cash etc. It is also, considering, pretty durable. Because it is synthetic it keeps me warm when it gets wet. Sheds a raindrops and snowflakes well. When it gets real nasty out the hood is form fitting and snug. As this is my second one I have noticed some discrepancy in sizing. First XL was tight and fit me well as an underlayer, second was bigger and is almost an overcoat to smaller layers.

Blown away by this kit and instantly in love with it. You can power up before your adventure by plugging into a traditional outlet. Then, when your in the field you can charge off the sun. The panel can easily be draped on your back pack while hiking or doing activities. I can charge my laptop, drone batteries, gopro, phone- pretty much anything. I have a mac, and while an adapter was not provided I just plugged my wall charger directly in to the inverter. I also left the battery outside my tent when it was 9 degrees and it barely lost any charge. Very, very impressed. Usually when that happens the battery is either totally dead or power has been greatly reduced. Not with the goal zero! Can't recommend this one stop power supply for your devices enough.

I have been a huge fan of scarpa for years. Originally I skied scapra boots and slowly ventured into their summer footwear. As I have gotten older my fore feet have spread. This boot uses a new last that fits my fat feet perfectly. They are light enough to wear using for work as an arborist but still keep my feet warm and DRY hiking around in snow and slope. I did put a pair of insoles with a bit more arch support. The soles have the right amount of flex to them and I would say are right in the middle of too stiff and too soft. I will say that after being in scarpa footwear for many years that I had to size down with the new last because of the extra width. I used to be a 45 (11.5) in all other scarpa footwear but went with a 44 (10.5) for the zodiac. 5

I have had this ski on an 18+ fresh day to a spring skiing corn mission and it did equally well in both situations. It surprised me with how well it floated in pow and does grip the hardpack really well. Really fun resort ski as well. A definite quiver of one ski. I am 6'1 and ski the 185 with Scarpa TX Comp boots and 22 Design Outlaws.

An all time favorite

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have skied on hundreds of skis as a ski tester, athlete etc over the years, this is my all time favorite. Traditional camber under foot gives the ski a poppy feeling and exponentially increases its versatility. Early rise in the tip that is impossible to dive. Versatile, fun, and slarvy.

THE NTN boot
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have long been a die hard fan of the 75mm but advancements in bindings have made me reconsider. This boot...its the one. It is stiff but comfortable and can handle anything you throw at it. Hiking/scrambling in this boot is much easier than the t-race since it does not have the duckbill. The walk mode, while not a lot of range of motion, is bomber and has never failed on me. The power strap is a huge upgrade from the models of the past. Easy to grab with gloves on and it is much stiffer and really locks the boot in. The buckles are also a nice upgrade, lighter and stronger all at the same time. Haven't broken one and I am in and out of rocks frequently.

I have a fat foot, especially in my toes. The laces on these shoes go way further down and allow you to open up the shoe and really dial in your fit. The heel pocket keeps my foot locked in but the laces allow my feet to actually survive a big day hiking. I also have really hot feet and these shoes are extremely breathable. The sole isn't overly thick but does still give great sensitivity.

First these things take serious abuse. I am out on my snowmobile a lot and between riding and digging most things take a lot of abuse. These don't even flinch. Even after heavy use they have zero tears in the material- can't say that about any other pants I have ever had. Second; I used to be total convert of bibs. That is until I met these pants. The cross ventilation really, and I mean really works. When skinning these things open up and give me a few different levels of how much venting I need. I used to be gaga for bibs because they never bound up and gave me unrestricted stride when skinning. The chemical pants do the same- they stretch! I also really like a back pocket zipper for my wallet- why I keep my wallet on me in the backcountry I have no idea, but its nice to have the option. These pants are the best of both worlds, tough as nails yet totally unrestricted touring movement.

Love this coat, highly breathable and stretchy yet still totally waterproof. Big mouth zippers on the side pockets are awesome and can store a ton of crap in the pockets. The pit zips are critical for when skinning and vent awesome. The skin pockets on the inside of the coat come in handy for storing gloves, hats, goggles etc. This coat is an all time favorite of mine. Great cut, fit (I like my stuff on the larger side).

Sure its a great saw for digging pits, but it really shines for me when out snowmobiling. This thing RIPS thru wood. Saplings, dead wood, etc. To have un epics, I always carry this sledding to get out of unforseen circumstances. Others said this was a flimsy, I respectfully disagree. It's sharpness yields defined columns and the measurements on the blade help make quick work of columns. Handle, while heavier than others, is super ergonomic, comes in handy when cutting a ton and is MUCH warmer than others. Sheath is finicky but I have used it for years and never had a problem with it. The saw fits easily

Fugatabout it!

My favorite gear is the stuff I don't have to think about. These poles are just that. I beat the daylights out of these things, rolling the sled with them on, whacking ice off repeaters, scraping my top sheets etc. etc. These things are durable! Big fat pole baskets, an unobtrusive scraper and a fail proof flick lock. They are light, not the lightest but you can count on them to get you out and back. To sum it up: DEPENDABLE

Backcountry Perfection in a shovel
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Had this shovel for years and it has performed flawlessly. Love that it is so compact and fits in any pack. Even though it is small, it is BURLY. I have dug out my sled and others so many times with this thing, serious snow mover. As a snow nerd, the absolute best part of this shovel is the blade. With a bit of practice, you get amazingly clean pit walls. I can trust this shovel and know that any time I pull it out, I can 100% rely on it.

Well balanced, well behaved and charges! Skied this in some of the worst snow possible; rotten, crusty, rocky etc. The huge tips keep the V8 on top and let you concentrate on having fun vs. worrying about what your skis going to do. As soon as it is in the soft snow the ski really starts to shine. Nimble, stable and FUN. The cap construction keeps the ski really light and reduces top sheet chipping. The bases are very durable as well. I have totally dry reefed these skis and was shocked at how little damage was done to them. I live out west and this is my do it all, quiver of all ski.

New favorite. Stuffs small when jammed in a pack and touring but still won't let any wind in when going 60mph on a sled. This coat is simply awesome. The little bit of stretch in the fabric means you are never fighting the coat, major bonus. Highly breathable; on windy days I will tour in this and my base layer . Open up the pockets which double as vents and it will cool you right down if need be. Really solid, do it all coat that is ridiculously light weight.

Literally the only work pants I own. The gusseted crotch and fit of these is amazing. I am a skier, I have a big thighs and most pants just do not fit me. These do. Super tough. Tough zipper, tough pockets (thigh pocket fits a pruning shears perfectly) and tough closure system. I can actually climb in these pants. I have had 6 or so pairs of these pants and have worn out a few but only after heavy, heavy abuse. Get these, you wont regret it.

Love this shoe! The canvas makes it conform to your foot yet gives you tons of support. The sole is a tad softer than some of their other shoes- makes it better for scrambling and gives tremendous foot feel. Took these hiking and with all the rock hopping we had to do these totally excelled. They also got wet and dried relatively quickly. The full rubber wrap around the toe box and beyond really made this shoe durable.
