Tucker Volk's Bio

My passion and heart are in the mountains and extreme sports. I was born and raised in Tahoe City, CA, trained in Park City, UT and received my B.A. degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. The people and places I surrounded myself with have inspired me to live simple, respect nature and adventure big. I was on the developmental team for the US Freestyle Arial Ski Team and competed at the national level for Freestyle Moguls. My skiing career ended in 2007, when I decided to stop competing to focus school. I have kept skiing aggressively in the backcountry and at resorts around the country. Skiing competitively and a drive to explore has pushed me onto other sports such as telemark skiing, ski mountaineering, surfing, SUP, biking and climbing.

I enjoy being around creative people and finding new ways to enjoy pristine landscapes. Working at Backcountry.com is incredibly rewarding because it enables me to connect my career and passion to help and inspire people to get out and explore this beautiful planet.

As a life long lover of the outdoors I am inspired by innovative ideas and products that progress and enhance the outdoor lifestyle. My priorities are being outside, not taking myself too seriously and being honest.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Look Pivot 18 Ski Binding is the same, binding I competed on and still use today. They have lasted 10 years and been on 7 pairs of skis. I have put them through the ringer and still have no issues. Weather yore racing, ripping bumps, skiing big mountain lines or throwing down in the park. These bindings will never pre-release and are my most trusted binding! For a little extra cash, you get a lot in return!!

Excellent liners, Maximise boot life
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have the Voodoo Telemark boots that are 3 years old. My liners were totally packed out and I wanted to upgrade to a stiffer telemark boot. Because I like to get the longest life out of my equipment I decided to give the intuition liners a shot. I am 6foot 3in and 185lbs and my boots were feeling flat, I chose this stiffer liner Peo Wrap Liner in a 28 for my 27.5 boots as intuition suggested. Once I heat molded them and skied on them a few days they quickly became exactly what I was looking for! My boots were back and better than new! Do your research and put a lot of thought into your old boots, you size, and the performance/typeof skiing you will be doing. My choice of the power wrap may seem a little unorthodox to many telemark skiers but with my size and original boot shell I am very happy with my choice!

YOU MUST HEAT MOLD THEM! And you will find out why as soon as you put you foot in them for the first time. As a DIY dude I decided to do the heat mold myself. http://intuitionliners.com/fitting/home-fitting-instructions/ It involves 2 pare of knee high stockings, 3 pounds of uncooked raw rice and a microwave. I followed the instructions and watched the video. After about 30min I was done and I was excited to rip the new boots! The rice in the knee high stockings is a little strange and but it did make a killer pork fried rice post boot molding!

Intuition liners are a boot and pocketbook savers! I like my boots better than ever and I can get 2 more seasons out of these boots.

A great choice! an amazing bag!
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am 63 and 185lbs and I really like the Osprey Kamber 22. It is unequally geared towards BC skiing and winter adventures. It is an excellent winter day bag. All pockets and straps are designed for winter fun equipment, keeps water out very well and the bag feels like it is part of you when you ride! It is super durable and user friendly. The zipper loops make it super easy to open and close with gloves on. It has plenty of space and straps to attach skis helmets and boots. Also it has pockets on both hip straps! You can fit compass, inclinometer cell phone, glasses and snacks all in the easy access pockets! As a bigger guy i would rather have the 32L

Super Versatile and Durable Bag
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am 6foot 3in, 190lbs and use this bag as my backcountry skiing backpack and go to bag. This is an excellent for multi-day trip bag, but for a big guy it compresses down nicely and can be used as a day bag. It is lite has lots of strap options and holds skis and skins very secure. A big waist strap pocket which you can fit compass, inclinometer, glasses and snacks all in the easy access pocket!

The best feature is It’s ability at feel like a much smaller bag. The bottom pocket access a compartment that has an un-zip-able separator flap to the main compartment. This makes the bag able to act as one big compartment or 2. Also, this flap runs from the top of the pocket at the front of the bag to the bottom of the bag where it meets your back/hips. For Day trips you can zip up this flap, load it from the top and it distributes the weight like a smaller bag. Through your wet and muddy approach shoes in there after the approach and no worries about getting your other stuff a mess. This feature is also amazing for “basecamp” trips because you still have a well-balanced bag after your night time luxuries are removed.

The Deuter ACT Lite 40+10 Backpack is my go to bag durable, light, comfortable, and incredibly versatile. I also use it as summer backpacking bag because of it incredible versatility and amazing airflow to reduce sweat!

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am 6foot 3in, 190lbs. I had the first generation Tahoe in a 188cm and rode it hard for 5 years. Although much has happened to improve upon this original design this review is a testament to the quality of this ski and the Moment brand. This is a all mountain shredder that can still crush the park! Its light, fast and playful. Does good in powder, powers through chop, carves hard on groomers and is super fun in the park and pipe.

The Moment team really knows what they are doing and this handmade ski is a tribute to there commitment to quality. I originally bought the ski as an all mountain ski for various conditions that I could still run hot laps in the park. It instantly blew me away in both. It is a ski you can drop big lines, rip through the bumps, carve high-speed turns and then through down in the park.

After ripping the skis hard for on my alpine setup for 3 years I decided to give them second life transfer them to telemark bindings, they were just to much fun! As my progression in the sport continued I pushed these skies of cliffs, down steep lines and in the backcountry.

These skies took a beating; 5 years, 4 states, 15+ deferent resorts, 2 bindings types (that's 18hloes/ski) and lots of fun. When they finally broke after landing on a rock early season it was an obvious decision to immediately order my next pare of Moments. The Tahoe was fun, versatile and durable and this is why I give this ski 5 stars

The Scott Voodoo 4.5 stars.
4 5

I am 6foot 3in, 190 lbs with a 10.5 foot size and I have been riding the 2016 27.5, Voodo 7.5mm for 1 year. It is a great boot! A true all mountain and shredder it does great on the resort, and in the backcountry. It can handle high speed carving and big lines. It does great in powder, powers through chop, carves groomers and remains stable in all situation.

The 3 buckle design allows for a bomb proff boot that is still comfortable while touring and walking. It is a bit softer than than other “race” “resort boots on the market but, If downhill performance is you goal and you have a mix or backcountry and resort skiing this boot is a great option and why I give in 4.5 stars

If you are buying a all new setup I would suggest the NTN version. http://www.backcountry.com/scott-voodoo-ntn-telemark-boot-mens?rr=t

The 22Design Axl 5 stars.
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am 6’3’’, 190 lbs with a 27.5mm boot size and I have been riding the 22Designs Axl for 2 years. It is the best 7mm binding I have skied! It is bullet proof, tough and customizable. The springs hold the heal down firm on the ski when doing airs and on ruff landings. It has great action and holds very stable. The touring function is smooth and easy to pop in and out of. However some ice can build up on the locking mechanism. I suggest rubbing a little wax on it to help minimize ice buildup.

I have it set up for backcountry and resort because I know it will preform. It is a little heavy on the assents but If downhill performance is your goal and you do a mix of backcountry and resort skiing this is a great binding . I give in 5 stars

If you are buying an all new setup I would suggest the NTN 22Design Outlaw.

The Moment Deathwish 5 stars.
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am 6 foot, 3 in€™, 190lbs and I have been riding the 2016 190 cm Deathwish for 1 year. It is a blast! A true all mountain and shredder! It is light, fast and playful. It surfs excellent in powder, powers through chop, carves groomers and remains stable whatever the situation.

Moment accomplishes this with their Triple Camber “dirty mustache” technology. It allows the ski respond with rocker in the powder while maintaining camber on the hard pack and on those sketchy traverses. When you see the ski you will understand the “dirty mustache” name and learn to love it as soon as you ski!!

The Moment team really knows what they are doing and this handmade ski is a true testament to their heritage. Being based out of Reno, NV the skis are evolved from the Sierra and can shred any snow type. An early spring day in Tahoe can mean early morning north facing powder and Southern spring corn in the afternoon. While chasing these conditions as the day progresses you encounter everything from chunky ice to heavy slop. No need to swap skis mid-day here! The Deathwish handles all with ease and is truly a one ski quiver. This is why I give this ski 5 stars

It is my go to when I travel. I have it set up as a telemark ski for backcountry and resort because I know it will perform. It is a little heavy on the assents but Moment has a solution for that. Please see the other recommendations below.
