Trey Schanzenbach's Bio

I am an Expert Gearhead here at Backcountry.com. It is my goal to get you the gear you need to pursue your passions!

I was born and raised in the great state of Texas, but when I finished college I realized that I needed something more out of life. I packed up my belongings and moved to the mountains. What was initially supposed to be single season of ski instructing at Deer Valley turned in to a never ending pursuit of all things outdoors. I fell in love with the mountains here in Utah and never looked back. I have spent the last 2 years getting outside almost everyday and wish to inspire everyone I meet to do the same!

My passions include skiing, backcountry skiing, climbing, mountain biking, hiking, yoga, and of course camping. Please reach out with any and all needs you might have here at Backcountry.com and I will do my best to assist you. I love talking about gear and would love to recommend some to make your passions even more enjoyable!

Height: 5' 4"
Weight: 130 lbs
Size Purchased: XS

Got these as a gift for my girlfriend ans here is what she has to say:
I love these pants! The material on the outside doesn’t give that annoying sticky, rubbing sound that many snow pants tend to give, the inside layer is incredibly soft and warm, and the fit is actually flattering, too! The pockets are perfect and seal with Velcro making it easy to get into but safe enough for stuff to not fall out. I wear a size XS when I usually wear a size 4 in pants (I’m 5’4” & 130lbs).

A size small fits slightly loose yet just tight enough (I typically wear a size 4 in pants). They’re comfortable and keep me nice and warm.

This jacket is sure to keep you warm and dry! Gore-Tex in a fully insulated jacket means you are going to be warm and dry every time you hit the slopes! I got this as a gift for my girlfriend and she can;t wait to try it out. She says the fit is perfect as it has long arms and covers her butt.

Most technical apparel is not suitable for standard washing machine detergent. This stuff is designed to wash you technical clothing whether its Gore-Tex, HyVent, H2No, Etc! Wash your garments and keep them looking fresh for years!

Pull the tab to search, its that simple. The triple antenna is the new standard for beacons and a major improvement over the old double antenna design. If you are venturing into the backcountry this beacon is the way to go. BCA makes the best beacons on the market and are consistently some o the best selling times on the site. Pick one up and be safe out there!

I usually hate wearing a belt because they don't move well and can sometimes restrict movement during activity. This belt is a game changer! Once you dial in the fit it will feel like they are one with your pants. So comfortable!

Wax on, wax off. Proper wax on your sticks is key to a good time on the snow. If you are having trouble with sticking to the snow, you probably need some new wax. This stuff is cheap and easy to apply with a hot iron. I typically change my wax with the changing of the temperatures to ensure I have a great time every time my sticks hit the snow.

I am a long time lover of the original Mojo shorts. They are my go-to workout and climbing shorts, so when I saw a stretch version I decided to give them a try. They are super comfortable and have a nice stretch, however the waist band is just not the same as the Mojo. This band is much looser and seems to stretch out more after continuous use. Also the pockets are noticeably shallower than the Mojo, and I don't trust putting my phone in them while working out. If those things were different these shorts would be perfect.

This recipe book is a great way to make your own power food to help get you through wherever your adventure take you. The rice based recipes are great because they don't need to be hydrated once they hit your stomach like oat based bars. This helps with hydration management and means you are absorbing the fuel you need better and faster.

Just picked up these bibs for the upcoming ski season and my initial impressions are great! I am big into backcountry and wanted something that would stretch and breathe more than standard 3 layer shell pants or bibs. The AscentShell fabric fits the bill perfectly and I am super stoked to get these out in the backcountry for some hands on testing!

The fit is a bit tighter than most snow pants, I am normally a medium and a large in these fit perfectly. Other than that the fit is great, plenty of room in the legs allowing for a nice range of motion while skinning uphill. There are also plenty of pockets, including an dedicated beacon pocket.

I will post a update once I have some on snow time with these bibs.

If you have any questions about these bibs, or anything else on the site, please contact me directly.

Just picked up this jacket in preparation for the upcoming ski season. I am big into backcountry skiing and was looking for a new shell that was light and pack-able but still provided enough protection for those blower pow days we get here in Utah!

I have yet to use the jacket, but my initial impressions are very good. The quality is top notch, as you can expect from anything from Arc'Teryx and Gore-Tex. The fit is spot on and as advertised it has a long (31 in) center back length that fully covers my butt. The powder skirt is actually really nice and doesn't ride up as I move around (though we shall see how that goes on the mountain). I am 6' 190 lbs and am able to comfortably fit a medium puffy underneath the size Large. The pockets are also really big and should be big enough to fit my skins on those days where sticking them in my pack would lead to them freezing.

I have yet to test of the waterproofing and breathability, but I am confident that it will exceed my expectations seeing as it is made with Gore-Tex Pro. Here is a little clip from Gore about their Pro fabric:
"The fabric’s construction keeps your body dry by reducing the accumulation of sweat, so you remain cool during aerobic activities and warm during cool-down. Made to meet the high demands of (ski)mountaineers, freeriders, mountain guides and serious outdoor enthusiasts, garments made with 3-layer GORE-TEX® Pro fabric are engineered with added durability to withstand abrasion in rugged environments while protecting against extreme and unpredictable conditions with frequent work-rest cycles."

I am super excited to put this jacket to the test on the mountain and will post an update once I have some real world experience with it.

If you have any questions about this jacket, or anything else on the site, please contact me directly.

I have heard from a few of my customers that the sizing on the Testarossa has changed from previous years. Both customers used to climb in a 44 and are now in a 42.5 and they fit the same. Keep that in mind if you have owned older models of the Testarossa and are buying a new pair.
Contact me directly if you have any questions.

I picked up this shoe to replace some old Reebok cross trainers and I absolutely love them! They have a stable platform for squatting and dead lifting and are light enough for sprints and box jumps. They don't have a lot of cushion, but it is just enough to take the impact of a good plyometric workout. Sizing is spot on, I got my street shoe size and it fits perfect.
