Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Pros: this is a very comfortable pack and highly adjustable -- you can change the width of the shoulder harness, adjust the torso length at will, and it has all the standard suspension straps. The zip down front panel is fantastic for getting to your gear, everything in the main compartment is at your finger tips. It has nice large side pockets and a detachable top that can serve as a waist pack or clip into the harness in front as a chest pocket.

Cons: they put the access to the side pockets on harness side, that which faces your back when the pack is on. This means you have to flip the pack over to get to them when the pack is off. This is weird weird weird and quite annoying, made worse by the relatively narrow opening to these pockets. Also, the sleeping bag compartment at the bottom is very hard to zip or unzip when the rest of the pack is full; the zipper and its little cover get taut in such a way that you can barely move it without a lot of struggle. And this thing is heavy. Made to last, probably great for traveling around Europe by various modes of transporation, not so good for hiking up mountains.

Just received the axe, and the pick is surprisingly dull, but not from damage. It looks like there may be a clear coating on the metal, dulling the edges. Is this normal? Can it be removed?

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

... and the Stohlquist Shift worked wonderfully. No leaks, the pockets were great to have, and the stand-by mode made it so much more convenient than the Kokatat suits my friends had. I could put it on first thing in the morning and pack up camp (or keep it on after a full day, while setting up camp), all without the neck gasket squeezing my neck. Nice for long scouts, too.

I haven't needed to use the sprayskirt tunnel but it's nice to have.

As for sizing: I'm 6'0", 170lbs, and the size large fits great.

I cannot get comfortable in this thing. It squeezes my legs together, and worse, the ends of the frame dig into the ribs on my back. I could see how it would fit a smaller person.. but hey, at 6' 170lbs, I'm no giant! I've tried adjusting it and myself and in no position can I bear it longer than a few minutes.
