Taylor Strand's Bio

Backcountry’s Gearheads are your instant connection to gear knowledge. They’re passionate outdoor experts hell-bent on helping you find the right ski, saddle, or pro. Follow their adventures and exploits.

I have been living in and around Cottonwood Heights, Utah for all 24 years of my life. It’s hard to beat being 20 minutes away from a chairlift and as some of you know the "best snow on earth." I have been working with Backcountry for five years now and have cherished every minute of it. The past five winters I have had the privilege to travel and work with amazing crew at Mountain Sports International, running events such as the Freeride World Tour, The Subaru Freeride Series, The North Face Masters, and The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series. With these events I have been fortunate enough to travel around to various parts of North America and ski a little if the time is granted. When I am not on the road you can catch me around the local skate parks in Salt Lake, adventuring among the Wasatch range, or here in the office.

I’d love to answer your gear related questions. Here is how you can contact me…

This jacket is absolutely game changing. Imagine the comfort and soft feel your favorite hoodie has combined with incredible warmth of 750-fill down. What more could you possibly ask for in a down jacket? How about the fact that they eliminated seems and wend to welded baffles instead! Now you are probably wondering why they did this...well with normal stitched seems it limits the ability of the fabric to stretch to its max potential. Now this technology allows you to move freely like a child on a jungle gym.

Bought this for a friends birthday and here is her feedback-

This is the second Trail Mix Lumbar pack I’ve owned. The updated version to fit larger smart phones is nice however the pocket is now big enough that my phone bounces a bit which doesn’t bother me physically but it is a bit noisy. The bottle nozzle is updated as well which is a bonus, as the previous version tended to leak if you weren’t super careful about closing it completely.

The waist belt is updated as well. As much as I like have adjustments on both the right and the left of the center buckle I miss the single action adjustment of my original model. Additionally the new elastics to hold the excess waist belt webbing are not as nice as the previous permanent Velcro catch.

A huge bonus is the weight. The Trail Mix Plus is significantly lighter with much nicer materials than the older version. I’m not one for flashy colors and was able to get one in a more subdued color palate.

Overall I like this one just as much as my original, I think it will just take some time for me to get used to the changes. I’ve tried a few other waist hydration systems and this one is my go-to. I can tighten it down enough so it stays in place on my hips. Most other ones that I’ve tried eventually work their way up and bounce too much.

Two thumbs up!

This pack is the perfect addition to my ever growing pack collection. Small, simple and the interface with the Topo Travel Bag is incredible. Don't think I'll ever check a bag again with this combo. Fits my 13in laptop and iPad with enough room for a water bottle and extra layer or snack.

This pack is so incredibly versatile you can pretty much use it for anything. Daypack, school, work, travel, concerts and so many more. It has a heritage look with a strong technical design. I love the separate laptop compartment and bottom stash zone that keeps wet or dirty objects away from the main pouch. Nice work Gregory! Killed it with this one.
