Twrote a review of The North Face Gotham Hooded Down Jacket III - Men's on June 18, 2019
Fit: Runs large
Purchased this winter coat my son who will be heading to college up north where the winters can get brutal. Did lots of research to find a coat that would be warm, water resistant, wind resistant, and not make him look like a snowman. This one seemed to check all the boxes. Ordered the asphalt gray/black combo and it looks great! First, regarding sizing, he usually wears a size mens Medium in t-shirts, jackets, etc. for most brands. But I’ve found that brands like North Face and Pantagonia tend to run a size larger, so we ordered him a size Small. He’s 5’8”, weighs around 160 lbs., and has an athletic build (more soccer player build than a runner). The small fit him perfectly, and maybe even slightly bigger than he’d prefer, but it’s fine because it gives him a bit of extra room to layer a thin fleece pullover underneath. I know a medium would be way too big for him. By the way, I’m roughly the same height but weigh around 185 lbs, and I tried on the coat and it also fits me, although I wouldn’t be able to fit a fleece underneath. It has some puffiness to it, but that’s to be expected for a down coat, but it doesn’t have that Michelin man puffiness that most down coats have. Material and stitching seem to be high quality. Pockets are a good size and the hood fits like a coat hood should. We considered several ski jackets but their hoods were too large because they’re meant to be worn with a ski helmet, but not this coat. I like the face cover feature that is sewn into the back of the hood, which you can pull over to cover the face when the wind starts to kick. We like the ribbed cuffs and ribbed hem at the bottom of the jacket, which hopefully will help keep the wind from coming in from those areas. I agree with some reviewers who’ve said the ribbing could be tighter, but I don’t see it as a big issue. Obviously, he hasn’t had a chance to test this in winter conditions, but so far so good!
