Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size

I'm 6'3" 180lbs with a 40in chest and wear a medium comfortably in this jacket. I ordered this jacket specifically to compare it to the Patagonia DAS parka. Both are mid to heavyweight synthetic-fill "parkas." They are probably the two heaviest and warmest on the market. However, in my opinion, this one beats the Patagonia DAS Parka. The biggest advantage that this jacket has is the hood/collar combo. This was the one feature on the DAS that I found to be a total fail. The collar on the BD Stance is taller, better, covers the lower face and neck, and can be cinched tight if desired to really protect the carotid/jugular heat loss. The DAS Collar cannot be cinched as tightly and does not cover the lower face, especially on a person with a taller/longer neck like me. This jacket is just as warm if not warmer than the DAS and will literally protect you in the most severe conditions (driving winds, subzero temps and windchill). I've worn it around New York City on the coldest days of the year and felt completely protected. The hood and collar are amazing and very protective when needed. The arm length and cuffs are also better on the BD Stance Belay. Overall I like the body and look of the DAS slightly more because it is (Slightly) less bulky but it in reality the BD Stance Belay is also a good looking jacket. As much as I liked the DAS, I decided to stick with the BD Stance Belay because the features seemed better overall.

I cannot rave about this jacket enough. I'm 6'3", 180lb. have a 40" chest and the medium fits perfectly with a little room for layering underneath. Also nice longer parka length. I wear this around New York City and it keeps me warm down into the low 20s with frigid winds. Its incredibly warm for its weight thanks to the Z-baffle construction that North Face utilizes. More key features are the tall snug collar that really keeps the neck warm and the recessed elastic cuffs at the wrist. I cannot emphasize these features enough as they really help keep things warmer. To be honest I actually like the features of this jacket better than those on the Patagonia DAS Parka. The DAS Parka is slightly warmer around the chest but the neck and sleeves on the DAS do not seal out the cold like this jacket. I am not normally a huge North Face fan but was pleasantly surprised when I first tried this jacket on. It has to be one of the warmest 500 gram-range synthetic jackets on the market. Also sheds water very well. Looks sleek and sylish as well in black. You wont be disappointed.
