Shannan Hansen's Bio

By now everyone has heard of yoga, but I am always surprised by how many people in the backcountry community haven’t tried it. I know you are tight, that’s why you need yoga! I have been teaching yoga for 12 years and I have never met anyone who is “bad” at yoga. If you can breathe you can do yoga.

Everything is yoga. When I am trail running, skiing, rock climbing, or even just being with my children, I use yoga principles of engaging my body, focusing on my breath, and trying to stay present. (And with my children it’s also a challenge to stay patient.)

I am an instructor, a presenter, a mother, a writer, a lover, a traveler, a seeker of new adventures. Ultimately I want to just experience all I can and keep discovering the mysteries in this planet, this universe, this life.

Light Lovely Long
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size

I like that this pullover is light weight and mostly wrinkle free. I have so many thick hoodies I appreciated this thin fabric that I can start my practice in until I feel warm. I have the medium in black and it fits nicely around the bust and is long enough to just cover my hips. I wish the sleeves were a bit longer. It's a perfect pre/post yoga cover up and nice enough to wear with jeans for dinner afterward. :)

Rubber mat? Let's do this!
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have avoided rubber mats for years because of the STANK. You heard me. I can hardly stand to be near one, let alone take a deep yogic breath on one. I like the idea of an eco friendly mat, however, so I decided to try this prAna mat.

When I first opened it, I thought I was in for the same stinky situation. Granted this is a rubber mat, and it does smell, but the smell started to fade after a few days practice. And the instructions say to rub lightly with a solution of water and white vinegar. This totally helps!!!

What really sold me on this mat and got me over the rubber smell is how damn lovely it is. The tribal looking design is elegant and somehow animalistic and I love looking at it during practice!! It is so soothing. The pictures online don't do it justice.

It is very thick and supports your elbows, knees, and head in various yoga poses. The thickness of the rubber makes it heavy though. I don't mind a heavy yoga mat but I wouldn't want to carry this mat on a plane or for long travel.

At 78 inches it is longer than the standard 72 inch mat which is nice when you're tall and lying flat on the mat your heels don't hang off. Total non-slip surface right from the get go in regular and hot yoga classes.

The only thing I can see will be an issue with this mat is that dirt shows easily on the mat. A quick wipe down after practice will keep it looking good, but it makes me wonder if it will start looking worn faster.

This is a great price for such a quality mat. Geez, I kind of have a crush on this thing. Beautiful lovely mat.....and rubber! Very cool.

Perfect length!
4 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: Runs large

It's hard to find a tank top for yoga that is long enough to cover your waist throughout a yoga class, but is neither too tight or too loose! This tank tackles and solves those problems. It hits me just below the waist band and stays in place during practice. The fabric is thick so it doesn't cling too tightly to your body but there is not extra bulk around the waist so it looks slimming as well.

I am 5'9 and ordered a medium. I found the bust to be a little large for me. I wanted the built in bra to fight tighter. There is a back hook to connect the straps together in the back and that does help. But if you are smaller chested, I would try a small.
I was worried I would feel the back hook digging into me when I was on my back on the mat, but I didn't notice it at all.

Overall I really like this tank top and because of the length I would recommend it for yoga, climbing, active wear, etc.

Love at First Wear
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size

If you worry about your thighs and how they look in tights, stress no more, these are the leggings for you! The Polyester lays flat and tight to the body and the touch of Spandex gives it plenty of stretch.
They make your legs look good!

Color:
I ordered the Red Violet Nouveau but they seem more Violet than red. But the print is very lovely and creates a slimming illusion as well...plus it's fun to look at and you'll get tons of compliments!

Fit:
I am 5'9 and 130 lbs. I ordered the Medium and they fit perfectly. The no-muffin-top wide waste band is my favorite.
Online the picture on the model shows a mid-ankle length. On my longer legs they are a little more like capris but I think they still look good.

I will continue to order this fabric blend of leggings from prAna in every color. Totally worth it! Happy yoginating!

My first pair of Salomon trail running shoes do not disappoint. The quick lace up system is snug and stays tight and I like the lace storage pocket.
Great traction for the trail.
These are true to size but they do fit a little wide in the toes. Overall a great shoe. I kind of love them!

Little too little
4 5

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These look like great ski pants and we can't wait to try them this season. My son is 11 and average size. I ordered the Medium based on the sizing chart. They fit him but are just a tad too small. He'll wear them this season but will definitely outgrow them by next winter. But I have younger sons he can pass them down to. Order a size up.
Otherwise they seem pretty warm, water resistant, and the bottoms easily went around his snow boots when we tried them on.

I have never practiced yoga on this mat but I have seen them in my yoga classes several times. From what I can see they are very soft and offer a lot of support under the feet and hands. When we came into headstand, the student with the Alo mat didn't have to fold their mat over for extra support.
I have felt the mat and can tell that the first couple of uses will be slippery but the tackiness should come with use. This is a good priced nice starter mat.

Big and Beautiful

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I needed new goggles with a darker lens so I got the Haven Green and Bleach based on Michelle Parker's review. They arrived today and I LOVE the color! Seriously so beautiful. The view from inside is golden and vivid. And from the outside it's shaded and you can't see your eyes. I haven't tried them in the snow yet but the vent system looks really good.
I think they are a little big for my face! Next time I may order Asian fit.

Who loves short shorts?
4 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: Runs large

These running shorts are SHORT. So that makes me feel self conscious sometimes. But they are so comfortable and cute I still wear them often and shamelessly. The waist band is thick and stays in place but is not too tight. And the inner lining has a sweet secret pocket for keys, iPod, money, or whatever you want to hide in your pants. :)
I am average size, tall, and usually wear a Medium. But I got a size small because the medium were the same length (3 in inseam) just wider in the leg which I don't like.
So if you don't mind a short running short, I would say order a size down so they're not too big.

Warm and (evidently) also COOL
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I ordered these mittens for my 11 year old son and they arrived the very next day. When he tried them on he exclaimed, "Cool!" He is a budding snowboarder and needs warmer gloves for the new season. He is average size and height but I wanted him to have room to grow so I ordered the XL (size 13). There is a little room in the fingers but otherwise fit fine. And you can tighten the wrist band to fit any size. So I would say order a size larger for your child.

The inner lining is soft and warm. The outside is Gortex and the tag says they are meant for ice cold conditions. Can't wait to try them out. Will update after we use them. But so far so good.

UltrAwesome
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Here's what: This vest feels like a part of your body. Is that weird to say?

I've used this vest on trails runs of all lengths and even after hours it doesn't rub or chafe. It's lightweight (until you load it down with all your running essentials, which you will because there are so many storage pockets in this vest you feel compelled to put something in every one!!) and is not restrictive anywhere.

Two things that detract from the general ease of this vest, 1) the drinking valve is a little tight to open, so keep it open and facing up for easier access, and 2)the front closure hooks are hard to undo. There's really no way around this but I've found that saying a few swearwords when I'm opening them makes me feel better about it.

I think UltrAspire makes really great running products. They have a new vest coming out specifically for WOMEN that won a design contest for the state of Utah. Can't wait!

I bought these solely on the idea that they were made from yoga mats. As a yoga teacher I spend a lot of time on my mat and thought it would be nice to try a shoe that felt like my "work space."
They definitely surpassed my expectations. These are soft, comfortable, and supportive. And look how cute the strap is!
Namaste. ;)

Chac-o-holic

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If you've never worn Chaco's well then, 1)Where have you been, and 2)Why not?
Chaco sandals are the go-to sandal for outdoor comfort and performance. I wear these hiking, rock climbing, camping, to the beach, to yoga, even when doing some grocery trekking at Walmart. I wear these all the time!
These fit well for wider feet but that can mean slender feet slide around a bit in the front. The ankle straps secure nicely though and help the foot stay in place. Beware that hours in these shoes can cause rubbing under the straps, especially if your feet are getting muddy or wet.
I prefer this simple black style but there are fashionable options with different colored straps.
Give in to peer pressure and try these shoes.

"Edgy" shorts ;)
4 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: Runs small

I like these shorts for hiking. At a Moab, Utah yoga retreat I wore them on a hike and when we stopped for a little impromptu yoga photo shoot, the shorts did just fine.
They do run a little small so get over yourself and just buy a size up.
KUHL is a "cool" company. I just love the story of how they came to be and always feel happy to support them.

Yoga to Trail Tights
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size

Sometimes on Saturdays I teach a yoga class and then go right to the mountains for a run. These are the tights I wear every time! They transition from yoga to running because they are stretchy, comfortable, and breathable.
They're also really great for those times when you need to stop on a bridge and do a straddle headstand.
I definitely recommend these!
