Sean Arruabarrena's Bio

I was born in Fort Collins, CO and grew up playing outside everyday. During my adolescence I played soccer, football, wrestling., and lacrosse. Lacrosse sent me out to Utah to play for Westminster College on a scholarship but after taking one hit too many, I was forced out of competitive sports and now enjoy spending my time in outdoor recreations. I recently graduated with a degree in Environmental Sciences and a degree in Outdoor Education and spend my days outside as much as possible. I enjoy a variate of activities including the following: snowboarding, skateboarding, backpacking, hiking, camping, scuba diving, rock climbing, mountain biking.

I am always looking for new hobbies and ways to get the adrenaline rush that us outdoor junkies need.

Personal Pros & Cons
4 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: 155 lbs
Size Purchased: 10

Ever since I got to backcountry all that I ever heard was that Hoka One One makes the best running shoes. I will be straight up honest and say that I am the biggest runner out there but I do stack at least a couple miles every time I hit the gym or treadmill. Let me mention that while some shoes are very versatile, I would not suggest these for the gym. Hoka One One uses a very soft rubber throughout the sole. That sole excels on the trail, gripping very well, and providing stability. The sole is extremely soft though so do not expect for these shoes to last if you are running on standard asphalt. I personally prefer a zero drop shoe and did not think that the 5mm feel to different from what I like to run in. I did feel like I was always on toes which is good, but I also found that my running form felt like it defaulted to longer strides with less consistency between each. The shoes were also a little too cushioned for me but I think that there are people out there that would really benefit from the extraordinary amount of cushion. To me, they felt somewhat bulky and not particularly what I needed for my personal running habits. To summarize, we have the following pros: lots of cushion, great traction, true size, wider forefoot. The cons that I would like to list for myself are as followed: too much cushion for me, narrow toe box, bulky, not a fan of the 5mm drop. Overall, great shoe that is worth at least giving a shot. With all being said, this was my first trail running shoe and I have had great experiences in them! Don’t let one opinion ruin your chance to find your perfect shoe. Call a Gearhead and talk over your options.

Wow! Mammut Crushes Footwear!
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: 155 lbs
Size Purchased: 10

Mammut does shoes right! I have always been a Mammut fan but unfortunatley it never seemed to fit my body to well. Their styles generally run a little more athletic and have longer arms than I use so I do tend to stay away from their clothes since they generally do not fit my body type. However, the shoes are the exception and I am stoked on the quality, and attention paid to these shoes during the manufacturing process. First off, I just want to state how bomber the Michelin tread is. Their tires keep your car in control at high speeds through varying conditions – gravel, rain, snow, ice. You can expect the same performance out of the rubber under your feet. This has given me unruly confidence to scramble up mountains that might have otherwise turned around from when wearing my Salomon X-Ultra Prime hiking shoes. Second, the fit is amazing for me. I generally wear Salomon because of their slightly wider last but the Alnasca’s fit me perfect. There is just the right amount of space in my forefoot and toes which surprised me. Although the toe box looks fairly narrow, I was surprised how well my toes were able to spread out, but also edge into cracks as I shimmy up steep faces. In terms of cushion, I was surprised to see how comfortable they were for being somewhat minimalistic. The padding has a unique pattern throughout the tongue and achilles that really provides just the right amount of support for extended use.

If you need a new approach shoe then give these a shot! You will be wondering why you didn’t try Mammut’s footwear earlier!

Getting Fat in the Backcountry
5 5

I picked up this grill for my last trip to Escalante and it completely changed my glamping experience. I am all for fires when the area permits and it is always great to be able to cook over an open flame. However, I used to simply put all my pots and pans directly in the fire when cooking and that caused issue: unimaginably hot cookware, ashy food, inability to keep the fire roasting. The Lumberjack Over Fire Grill makes it easy to avoid these problems and really enhances the entire cooking experience. You can grill directly over on the grill, or use it with whatever pots and pans you need.

Watch Out for Sand Abrasion
4 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: 155 lbs
Size Purchased: 10

These Chacos are pretty awesome and I like them a million times better than my Tevas. With that being said, be careful of wading in and out of streams when you are in the desert walking. Sand has the ability to work its way underneath the straps and shred your toes. Both my girlfriend and I's feet got shredded but they definitely hike extremely in the majority of the places you can go. The toe straps are clutch for hiking downhill and ensure that you have support where you need it on the decent.

My favorite skate shoe just got a little bitter by eliminating the pesky laces that always end up breaking from too many flat ground tricks. These rubberized toe caps really increase the life of the shoe and will give you new confidence with your abilities.

Let me know if you have any questions or need help with sizing!

These are extremely comfortable and even work great for high aerobic activities. The feature that really has me sold is the junk hammock. There are side barriers in the crotch that keep you collected without the constricting tightness that tighty whities provide. I can even run several miles in these without any chaffing which is great considering that most briefs can rub you raw.

This water bottle is great! It is slightly heavy and would not necessarily recommend this to someone who will be backpacking due to its weight but if they want their colds to stay cold, and their warms to stay warm then this will do it. I have owned several Hydroflasks in the past and have to say this is my favorite size. It fits really nicely in my Subaru Outback's cup holder but is tall enough to be able to store my daily fluids. I would say that I do not think the new lids are quite as good in terms of insulation as their last models.
I have yet to test the insinuating properties in Utah's summer but have high hopes that my fluids will remain at a perfect temperature throughout my entire day.

Be careful when sizing up this board and a new set of bindings. Burton makes this board in a Women's size so if you find the same size you need available in both the Women's and Girl's sizes, and if you find that you need adult bindings then you will need the adult sized board. Adult bindings do not fit on the Girl's EST channel.

This is an awesome surf town inspired shirt and looks nice for fancy dinners, a night on the town, or hanging out with the boys. However, unless you want to flex and break out of this like the hulk size up in the shirt. One wash on warm and a cycle through the dryer and you'll feel like you bought this from Baby Gap. Do yourself a favor and size up if you plan on washing this like a person from the 21st century. Feel free to shoot me an email or give me a call if you have any questions.

Fit: True to size

Weight: 118 lbs
Size Purchased: Small

My client Lisa bought this for a camping and backpacking trip in Grand Teton National Park to keep her warm during cool August/September nights. She instantly fell in love with the vest and noted it as being a fabulous piece to add to her camping set-up! It is so packable, she didn’t notice the extra weight on her 4 day backpacking trip, and she told me should could literally stuff it anywhere. It kept her core surprisingly warm for how lightweight it is. At her height and weight, the small fit perfectly with just enough room to to throw a few layers on under, or over it. Let me know if you have any questions regarding this vest, or if you need help making sure that it is the perfect piece for your build.

My customer Lisa bought this shirt for a camping and backpacking trip in Grand Teton National Park last summer and had the following to share: "I bought this shirt for a camping and backpacking trip in Grand Teton National Park last summer. I decided a few years ago that I preferred long sleeved light weight wicking shirts with UPF 50 sun protection on hot sunny days versus short sleeves and greasy sun screen. I love this shirt! The Nasturtium color is a vivid coral and the material is very soft. I’m a 34C/D and had to exchange the small for a medium because it was slightly tight in the bust. Even though it doesn’t have a lot of stretch, the medium was a perfect comfortable size for me to do all of the activities I love without restriction. The material is lightweight and breathable on warmer days and it provides the sun protection I need!"

It is hard to find the insulation weight for these mittens anywhere so I wanted to share it for anyone trying to compare mittens. On the back of hand the mittens have 20 oz (560 grams) Primaloft One Insulation while the palm uses 10 oz (280 grams) of Primaloft One.

If you have any questions regarding gloves and mittens, or need assistance with any other gear needs please feel free to shoot me an email at sarruabarrena@backcountry.com, or call me on my direct number: 801-204-4679.

My Client Had This To Share

The Uber Redox is the best winter jacket I have ever owned and I'm incredibly picky. The Redox is warmer than any jacket I've had or tried and I've tried all of the premier outdoors and fashion brands. The combination of the down, water and wind-proofing has kept me warm in single digit temperatures. Two other things are really important to me: fit and lack of branding. The fit, for me at least, is perfect. The stretch fabric means that the jacket looks impeccably tailored whether I have a t-shirt or heavy sweater on under it. In terms of branding, I would never wear a jacket with some huge logo on it; I find that particularly offensive on coats that I may want to wear over a suit for work. The Redox is perfect. It's worth noting that while the chest branding may look prominent in the pictures, it's very hard to see (I own the blue and gray). It's some sort of reflective paint that is only really visible when light hits it from a particular angle; most of the time it's barely visible. This plus the fit enables the jacket to fit in equally well over a suit as over casual wear. Last comment is that I love pockets and was excited to find that there's a hidden zippered pocket in the lining that is not mentioned here or on the Uber website. See pic!

This is without a doubt in my mind one of the most forgotten accessories for backcountry skiing, or splitboarding. I can't begin to discuss the versatility of these straps but lets just say when things go wrong, Voile makes it right. On several occasions I have had trouble with my skins starting to fall off my split after multiple tours in a day. A simple strap makes all the difference and ensure that you do not have to go back to the car, and that those untouched pow stashes will not stay untouched for long.

I can't fully attest to how the these skate as I have only skated them a couple of times to my way to the local 7-Eleven for some late night snacks. However, what I do know is that these offer a lot of support, are super comfortable, and have gotten me excited about wearing high tops again. If you do plan to skate these go for the Navy color as they are suede and will resist the wear of grip tape longer than the leather on the white.

I can't tell you which pant from Prana I like best, but I can tell you that you can never go wrong with their pants. The men's styles are consistently true to size, comfortable, and work better for everyday life than anything I have ever worn before. They look clean, stretch, fit comfortable, have deep colors, and take every environmental procedure to ensure that the people who make their clothes are taken care of, as well as that their materials are sustainable harvested and processed. If you want to get behind a company that is doing it right in every way, Prana is definitely the one to support.
