Sara Gemmell's Bio

After growing up and going to school in Michigan, my itch for the outdoors found me in Utah not long after I graduated from Northern Michigan University with my Bachelor's Degree in Marketing. I grew up with a love for skiing and I couldn't stay away from the mountains, so after a ski season of instructing in Park City, I decided to try to make Utah home. I worked a number of jobs, in a variety of industries, all with the goal of pursuing a career in the Outdoor Industry. Now, after a year of working for The North Face at the retail level, I am continuing to grow a career in the industry with the Backcountry.com team.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I had put of purchasing a pair of these for so long (because I thought they were unnecessary) until a gnarly slip and fall while hiking this winter. After a bruised elbow (and ego), I finally ordered a pair and they haven't come off my hiking/running shoes since. These are so light weight and easy to put on, the only issue I have had with them is that the smalls are just slightly big for my Women's 7 1/2 size feet. They haven't fallen off at all, they just shift slightly when I am hiking on uneven ground and I have to adjust them. Overall, I am very happy with them and feel much more well-equipped for hiking on icy trails.

Fit: True to size

My dad has traditionally been gifted a new pair of slippers every Christmas because he is known for wearing them so much that they usually have holes by the next year. Not anymore! The suede leather upper and rubber out-sole makes these slippers built to last!

I purchased these for my mom for Christmas and she loves them! The faux fur insulation keeps her feet warm and the durable rubber sole makes it easy to run out to grab the mail without worrying about slipping on the driveway. She joked that she could shovel the driveway in these for the rest of the winter!

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend and it was just what he was looking for! He wanted a small, versatile fishing pack that was easy to access while in the river or while sitting on shore. The drop down front panel and bottle holder are two of his favorite features!

The Skida Alpine Headband is my new favorite accessory for any chilly outdoor adventures! The fleece lining paired with the poly-spandex outer keeps your ears warm and dry. The pattern options are adorable and add a pop of color to your outerwear. And, the spandex material allows for stretch but also a tight enough fit so that it stays in place to keep your ears warm. I paired the Alpine Headband with the Tour Neckwarmer and love them!

A polyester neck-warmer that doesn't get wet and freeze AND is super cute! A win win! I am so excited about my Skida Tour neckwarmer and matching headband. They are functional for skiing and hiking, and I love the great pattern options that add a pop to your outerwear. The material is so soft and stretchy and drys super quickly. I am very happy with this neckwarmer!

After a couple of seasons in the Tecnica Cochise Pro 105's, I decided it was time to upgrade to a lighter-weight, stiffer boot, with more range of motion. So far, I am impressed! At just 3lbs, these boots allow for ease on the way up, but still charge like an all mountain boot on the way down. For any ladies looking for a touring boot that skis with the stiffness of an all mountain boot, the Zero G Guide's are the boot for you!

I recently purchased the OM Sports Bra from Lucy because I love their athletic-wear, but had yet to purchase a sports bra from them. It is very cute, I like the removable cups, the material is great and it is very supportive, but it runs a little small.

I recently purchased these leggings after owning a pair of the Lucy Studio High-Rise and I love those so much that I had to get another pair. The length on these is perfect for me, I am 5'3" and the Studio High-Rise are a little long, but the length on these are perfect. They are a little tighter than I expected, but not so tight that I felt the need to size up to a medium. The mesh detail on the ankle and the thigh pockets are also great features on these leggings!

Great three-season bag!

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased this bag a couple years ago, and for summer camping and mild fall and spring nights this bag is great! The compression sack that it comes with allows for compact enough storage for backpacking, but I have also used this bag for car-camping trips. For cool spring/falls nights in higher elevations, 20 degrees would definitely be pushing it on comfort in this bag, but if you are looking for a good all-around three-season bag I would definitely recommend the Blue Kazoo!

I hadn't tried Superfeet insoles until about a year ago, but had always struggled with sore feet because I have very high arches and trouble finding shoes with enough arch support. Once I purchased these, all of that changed! These insoles offer so much support, fit in all of my running and hiking footwear and last for so long! It did take a bit for my feet to get used to them, but now that they are I can't run or hike without them! I would highly recommend for anyone with high-arches looking for better arch-support in their running/hiking footwear.

This jacket has such a flattering fit, while still being very functional and warm! It is so lightweight and packable, so this is my go-to for packing in a carry-on while traveling. The arms are a little long, but that is usually the case with how Arc'teryx jackets fit me. The Yerba is even great for layering under a shell because it doesn't have a hood, which is nice when the shell has a hood. I would highly recommend this jacket if you are looking for something for casual use to keep you warm, but something that also functions well as a layering piece!

I recently purchased these for my dad, these are his third pair and this is what he has to say about them: I have had three pairs of the Merrell Chameleon shoes, the most recent I purchased in September of this year. The shoes wear well, and I like the lace design, but I believe they have changed the internal structure of the shoe since it is very difficult to first put the shoe on and I did not see this in the earlier model that I had purchased. Once on the shoe is very comfortable with good support. I hope they “break in” more without ripping for future easier “on and off”.

I love this jacket! I purchased the Arc'teryx Yerba Coat last fall and loved how it fit, so the Nuri was a great addition to have a similar fitting, but long down jacket with a hood. This jacket fits so well, it is not bulky in the shoulders, it is slimming on the waist line and the length is great hitting mid-thigh. Previous down jackets that I have had are way too long (I am 5'3"), but the Nuri is the perfect mid-thigh length. I also love all of the neutral, yet unique colors that this jacket comes in! I purchased it in Banyen and love it. The image doesn't do the deep-forest green justice! Another great feature is the double-zipper that allows you to unzip from the bottom for more comfort and mobility if you are sitting or squatting down. And lastly, it is so lightweight and packable! A major plus, because some down jackets can be pretty bulky.

I bought this as a gift for a friend and she loves it. It smells amazing, it is slow burning and she is so excited to use the cute steal mug once the candle has burnt through. The tree-design is adorable and so unique! I may be purchasing again soon as gifts for the holidays.
