Robert Lusk's Bio

Having grown up in the lofty mountains of Utah, I have a love for being outdoors. A wanderer in mind, body, and soul, I am notorious for disappearing for hours to go exploring the places I'm in. As a matter of fact, I've created a plan to walk all the way across the continental United States as soon as I graduate from college, starting at Point Reyes Lighthouse, up the Pacific Trail, around through Yellowstone and the Wind Rivers, across the Mississippi River in a Duct Tape Boat, through the cities of New England, to the edge of Lubec, Maine, ... well... you get the gist. (It's a pretty comprehensive list which includes the return trip, too)

In addition to my love of adventure, I am a student of Hatha-Raja Yoga and Old Yang style Tai-chi. Earning my certificate to teach in the next few months, I hope to spread the concepts of balance and health to others, as well as show off some incredibly awesome asanas I've picked up over the years.

As a Gearhead here at Backcountry, I plan on giving people the best advice and service I can offer.
Feel free to email me with questions at rlusk@backcountry.com or call in to talk at 1-800-409-4502 ext. 4508

And remember the wise old words:

Straight from Toad and Co.'s Modern Travel line comes this fantastic jacket. I was a little skeptical about getting this one at first (okay... okay... a lot skeptical, but hey) but in the end I went for it. At this point, I will admit that I was very dissatisfied with it when it arrived. When I pulled it out of the box, I felt the material and was a little distressed by its thickness, which is about the thickness of a white, button-up shirt that you would buy for 20 bucks at Wal-mart. I was convinced that this was in no way supposed to keep me dry or comfortable in Spring to Fall temperatures.

But, as with all gear I buy, I always put it to the test before I make a final decision. And I'm glad I did. This jacket is perfect for what it is designed for. I've pitted it against a blizzard and it repeled water great (even when I was a snowman) and it dried very quickly once I got inside. It also is comfortable in windy conditions and has a great look (the tag actually claims if you don't get a compliment by the third wearing, you can return it for a full refund, and I get one on every third wearing) All in all, makes a great travel jacket; it is light and packable and does a fantastic job. It also fits a little bit large, but thats especially great because you can wear another, warmer jacket underneath comfortably.

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
Fit: True to size

Okay, so my poor mother has never had much success with coats. (usually zipper problems...) So for her birthday, I set out on the mission of finding the jacket that would last.

I compared 40 or so jackets, ranging from Lole to Patagonia to Eider, before I finally settled on this one. And I'm very pleased with this jacket.

It's warm, functional, and fitting for everything I was looking for. From the StormHood that easily would be compatible with a helmet for climbing or cycling to the jersey-knit sleeves that comfortably pulls over the base of the hands on those days you've forgotten your gloves. The interior chest pocket is spacious, with plenty of room to throw your keys and a couple of other essentials, way better than some of the ones I've dealt with that you can barely fit a business card in.

The material on this is very high quality, and its going to survive the long run, which was the main reason I bought it. And what's awesome about Arc'teryx products, is that they stand behind their stuff, if the zipper breaks or the material gives out, I'm covered on their fantastic warranty.

Okay, so first: this item runs big. I was given it as a gift and they gave me a small. I wear mens large normally, occasionally I can squeeze into a medium. I don't quite fit, but I can put these on and use them. Which is awesome for me, might not be for someone else...

Second: these things take wind in stride. First day I had them we had a gust storm blowing down from the canyon and after the two blocks of walking to my apartment, my hands were still warm. They may not be the warmest things in existence (my hands normally get cold around 15 degrees or so), but they take wind chill and throw it out the window.

The material on the inside can be a little itchy if your hands are dry, but that's an easy fix with either a glove liner or lotion.

Not puffy and has a low, gauntlet like profile that I really like, as it offers great dexterity.

All in all, a great pair of gloves

Title says it all. I love this towel, but I'm fairly certain, after several uses, that its not quite cut out for hot yoga. But as a lightweight gym or travel towel, its definitely a competitor. Really big towel but it rolls up into a small compact scroll great for packing. Soft on skin and absorbent enough to meet any need.

Also makes a very stylish scarf...

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was looking for a solid bag to replace the old super heavy one that I own. I didn't want to spend too much money either. This bag satisfied everything I needed and wanted and more. I've used it a couple times and have never slept so warm in my life. (I have bad circulation to my feet so they are always cold, but every time I've used this I've not had any problems). Not super light so won't be perfect for extensive packing trips, but definitely my go to bag for the overnighters and traveling from now on.

I really like the material and feel of the bag. I was a little nervous with purchasing Marmot as some people have had issues with tearing, but this one feels like it will last. I also really like how they have glow in the dark tabs on the zippers, so much easier than fumbling around for it.

I'm 6' even and the regular size fits me with plenty of room to spare, so the bag is plenty large enough and doesn't run small.

Just wish we'd get some snow so I can go snowcaveing...

I really love this hoodie. It fits perfectly, looks sleek and is super comfortable. Its a longer hoodie than the other ones I have, comes down to about mid-thigh on me. I've gotten tons of complements on it.

Its a bit tricky at first to figure out how to put it on... the balaclava style hood makes things interesting... (but it makes me feel like a ninja so thats even cooler [I feel six years old again...])

Not super warm, but then again its a base layer and meant to have stuff over it. Great for fall/spring weather though.

Well, what more is there to say? This is a decent set of headphones for the price, but I'm pretty sure it would be worth the extra money to get something with better quality sounds and definitely worth it to get something with softy earpieces. After using these for a little while they really start to hurt your ears...

I also had some issues with the wiring and the sound not coming in right. Turned out that the mic had a bit of a short in it, but I jimmy rigged it to work just fine. That does mean though that the wiring could just be faulty to begin with and wouldn't work quite right so I'd think you'd want to look at other options.

So I've always wanted to get a hat like this and I finally broke down and bought one. I love this hat, fits great, looks cool, etc. But I do have one complaint... I bought it in the Blue/Navy rope, and everyone thinks its a sailors cap... wasn't exactly the look I was going for.

I'm pretty sure that if you did purchase it in a different color, (my opinion from the other photos) you'd get more the look that I think this hat should have. I'm definitely going to keep the one I have, but I'm thinking I might get it in a different color. Suggestions anyone?

Just bought this jacket and it ROCKS!

I got it as a layering piece or for a fall jacket to subsidize what I already have, but I think I found my new favorite. Incredibly comfortable and light weight, it's got everything I need for my spontaneous adventures. (Plenty of pocket space too, which is always a plus for me)

I've used it on a couple of surprisingly cold mornings and once in the rain, and it's proved to be warm and very water resistant. I look forward to pitting it against the chill of the alpine weather and the blizzards of Utah.
