Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Fit: True to size
Height: 6' 5"
Weight: 215 lbs
Size Purchased: Large

All the five star rave reviews (12 at the time of my purchase) might give one the impression that there is no room for improvement, but that is not the case. There are a few flaws worth mentioning. First and foremost, the full-length front zipper is a left-handed one, meaning that the pull tab to zip it up is on the left side from the point-of-view of the wearer and so you have to use your right hand to fit the insertion pin into the box of the zipper and your left hand to pull the tab of the zipper up. This is precisely backwards from every other full-length zippered fleece top or jacket I own, and is annoying for a right-handed person. Second, the gauge of the front zipper is too large in my opinion. The width and thickness of the fabric (or "tape" as it is known) that the zipper is embedded combined with the size of the zipper and the way the zipper is sewn into the garment and backed with more wool fabric makes the whole length of the front zip of the hoody feel too thick and stiff, especially considering the relatively thin wool fabric of the rest of the garment. The plastic reinforced top and bottom of the zipper tape contributes to this also. The ends of the sleeves are a little different, there is a separate end piece sewn on to each arm, which is the part which includes the (enormous) thumb holes. These don't look too attractive in everyday wear, but you can tuck these arm extensions in and under after putting the garment on. Finally, the hood is cut in such a way that it covers quite a bit less of the sides of ones face at the jaw line than other hoods, although some might like this. All in all I must say I was a bit disappointed given the very high price and the expectations created by all the gushing in the other reviews. I'm pretty tall (6' 5") and wish it were just a tad longer, but other than that the L size gives me a nice athletic fit. I can't be sure but I think the XL would have been a bit baggy.

Love these socks. Very thick, warm, and comfortable. I have been using these socks in Scarpa Charmoz Pro GTX boots. Great combination. My feet (and the socks) are noticeably drier at the end of a long day, and the socks seem almost as fresh as when I put them on.

I bought one of these in 2008 just prior to an Aconcagua trip and ran out of time to test it before leaving. On the mountain it produced zero current. I should have returned it or made a warranty claim, but I figured I must be using it wrong. It went into the garage. Now I have a Peru trip coming up so I tested it today with a multimeter. Nothing. Zero output. So if you take a chance on one of these, test it carefully as soon as you get it. I think there are better options out there these days.

My first impressions on receiving the pack were that the ice axe loop on the left side was missing an elastic adjustable tie down device at the bottom attachment point, and that the hip belt strap was way too long. I contacted Mountain Hardwear customer support and they responded promptly and helpfully, arranging for me to return the pack for alterations at no expense. They are going to shorten the belt and finish the end professionally and also send me an extra elastic tool attachment device.
