Monica Schroeder's Passions

Monica Schroeder's Bio

I'm a scientific illustrator and social media marketing professional during the week and spend my free time as a kayak guideor at the rock climbing gym.

I love exposing people to the natural beauty of the waterways surrounding New York City.

When we travel, we chose a place where we can enjoy the outdoors, usually by paddling, swimming or snorkeling.

I live in Long Island City with my husband and our two crazy rescue dogs, Brigitte Bardot and Franklin Roosevelt.

Handy Classic Jacket with a Modern Look.
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 5"
Weight: 145 lbs
Size Purchased: US10/UK14

FIts great, perfect warmth for chilly Spring mornings and evening. All I need, keys and phone fit in the outer pockets. There is a secure inside pocket for my cards. The outer pockets snap closed.

Love that the sleeves go below my wrists. They are snug enough to not let the wind blow up the sleeves, yet loose enough so I can easily look at my watch.

One of my favorite details of this jacket is the waist shaping option. THere are hidden snaps in the back. You can make the waist snugger or looser for a boxier look. I set mine snugger.

I was looking for a dog walking jacket for the Spring. Since I've received the jacket I don't just wear it walking the dogs, but wear it on my bike commute to work, going out with friends. Just about any casual occasion.

Washed it once already and still looks like new. No shrinking or fading.

TWO ALERTS: 1) the sizes on this website are UK. Had ordered 10, which is actually size 6 in the US. Backcountry was able to correct my size before it had shipped out. So if you are a size 10, you need to choose size 14 on the pulldown.
2) The image of the black jacket shows a blue jacket. The black is indeed black, beige inside.

2 5

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Fit: Runs large

There is a buckle in the back to open and close it, but no way to make it tighter or loser. I keep opening and closing the buckle, but of course that does nothing. This review is before wearing it even once.

Most confusing is that people say it is adjustable, but mine isn't. Otherwise it is such a fabulous hat, so I'll take the time to cut the straps and sew it to fit me.

Follow up: Once i cut the strap to make it smaller - it became clear that there was a way to adjust the cap. It is hidden inside a tube of cloth along the brim.
A simple note would have stopped my frustration and stopped me from cutting the strap.

It fits perfectly now that's I've sewn it.

Super high collar., Well designed coat.
4 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: Runs small

A beautiful well made & well thought out coat. Nice waist shaping. hidden zippers, warm pockets. Good details. Really functional.

I wear a medium in other Marmot coats, of which I have 4 others.

It fits snug. Best with a light shirt and sweater. I wore in 40 degree, 36 windchill & rain. Perfectly warm & dry.

Traveled for the holidays and only had ot take 1 piece of outerwear. Wore rain shell in 55 degree rain - was great. Wore the liner jacket alone when sunny but in the 40's.

But the weird part is the collar. It was so tall, it went up over my eyes and ears! Yes, couldn't see or breathe. Just the top edge of my eyeglasses was showing the top of my head. Hilarious.

Well, at least no rain is getting in.

Subtracted a point because I can't zip up collar. If it were 1 - 2 inches shorter, it would still be functional, but not cover face. Note: you can't wear the hood unless the collar is up.
