Michael McMillan's Bio

Born and raised in the heart of Texas, I spent most of my youth on the deck of a bass boat and my buddies deer stand. For the last 6 years or so I called the Pikes Peak region of Colorado home. Here I learned my love for the mountains and rivers as a whole, and eventually ended up working as a fly fishing guide on the South Platte river.

Most of the year you will find me waist deep chasing trout, or rowing a raft down a canyon somewhere. When I'm not on the river, I'm probably out backpacking with my dog Mac, or working on my mediocre climbing game.

Whether you are as passionate about the outdoors as myself, or you are just getting into a particular activity, I would love to hear about your next adventure!

My name is Michael, and I'm here to help. Please feel free to connect with me to subscribe to all of my reviews and tech articles. Don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions about that next piece of gear, or even a local fishing report!

Nothing but good things to say about the fit and comfort of this Patagonia T-shirt. Gotta love the Organic Cotton/ Recycled Poly blend, these guys are saving the world one T at a time. Always good designs and color choices. Fits true to size with a semi-fitted style.

I have been pleasantly surprised by this harness both in durability and function. Mac is an 80lb bolt of energy that has been known to destroy plastic buckles and cheap leashes in droves. However, this harness just seems to take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. There is a strong webbing loop on the chest of the harness which is clutch for preventing him from pulling when on leash. All and all this is just a great harness for walking around town or hiking/backpacking with your pooch.

Rio has been making these Knotless leaders for over a decade now, and they are still the industry standard. When you have a solid fish on the line the last thing that you want to be worried about is your leader, and with Rio that is just one less thing you have to think about. the 7.5' 4x is my trout leader of choice and is perfect for building out a 9' -12' set up. Never hit the river without at least a few spares in your pack

It's a sunny day on April 23rd, your skiing corn and slamming PBR's with your crew on closing day at the resort. Your dad would be so proud. These bad boys are the perfect adventure shorts for all seasons. The 5" inseam is exactly the right length for sunning up those beautiful man thighs on the river, and the bottomless pockets can hold more cold beers and beef jerky than your little heart can handle. There is a reason these are the shorts by which all other shorts are measured.

Classic henley design in an awesome Dri-fit fabric. This is a great shirt to wear to the office and then to an afternoon climb or yoga sesh at the park. I love the collaboration between Hurley and the Nike crew. Solid everyday shirt. Fits true to size if not a tinge on the relaxed side, I sized down for a more athletic fit.

This blanket is perfect for truck bed camping, and just about the right size. I usually set the bed up with a sleeping bag and throw this over top for comfort on colder nights, or just this with maybe a Mexican blanket on most nights during the summer and fall. The material is pretty darn durable and easy to keep free of burrs and desert dirt, much more so than the aforementioned Mexican blanket. This model uses synthetic filing and is great for car camping, but really not all that packable. If you want something more compact or lightweight for a backpacking blanket than look at the down version, which would be a perfect choice for hammock camping in the summer.

These are a great pair of earbuds, and the charge will generally last most of a long day skiing or hiking. The only qualms I have are that the little battery pack tends to swing to one side during vigorous activities like skiing, and it will pull out the opposing earbud. I have found my way around this usually by supporting the battery with my goggle strap or Croakies, but it is not ideal. Also, they will sometime cut out when I am bending down to secure my ski boots, not sure why this happens or what is causing it to lose signal, but it last for a second and then the beats are back. as soon as I stand back up.

All and all these are a solid pair of buds for getting out and after it. Maybe a more anatomical design for the earpiece would eliminate the falling out issue.

This little lantern shines! Plenty bright for lighting up the area around a campfire, and small enough not to leave behind, I haven't used the charging function all that much, but it seems to work fine in a pinch. Just remember every minute charging your phone is a minute you may not have light.

I like the built-in cable for charging, however, my only concern is that if this cable is ever damaged or torn there is no other way to charge the lantern ( i.e micro USB port). A small concern sure, but a real possibility. The ability to turn on one side of the lantern is very nice to keep the light off your tentmate during a late night emergency bathroom outing, or when reading in your sleeping bag. it also helps save a lot of energy. I probably wouldn't take this backpacking with me, as it is just a little bulky for foot travel. But if you are a van glamper or desert dirtbag that just needs a good light for setting up camp at 10 o'clock at night after a long day fishing/climbing/rafting/base-jumping - than this thing rocks.

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

My GF and I were having an incredibly hard time finding a shoe that fit for her, she has a slightly wider foot than most women I guess. Finally, after a recommendation from a fellow gearhead, we convinced her to try a men's shoe and she actually loved the fit on these. The slightly wider last is perfect for her foot and it is a shoe that she can climb in all day. Colors are very gender neutral so there is no problem at all really. Great shoe for everyone!

Just a bomber Summer and river short, Plain and simple. The material is a really durable old-school Nylon, and the prints are just fresh. I like the little hidden zipper pocket on the thigh, it is great for some Chapstick or a small wallet. The other pockets are deep but no zippers, so not really river safe. I would normally order a medium, as I am a 31-32 waist, but most of these Kavu shorts are pretty relaxed and the Small is a perfect fit.

This reel is one of the most classic and recreated designs of all time. There are no smoke and mirrors here, just you and that pure sound of the Click n' Pawl drag screaming as a bucky brown trout is running downstream with your fly.
One thing to consider when buying is that the size IV is MUCH larger than the I-III, as it is more designed for steelhead or even potentially saltwater applications. You can fit more backing and line on this reel than one could ever possibly need.

There is nothing more to say about this shirt other than it rocks, I wear this thing in the dead of summer to keep the sun off when rowing rapids or even as a lightweight base layer under my puffy during ski season. The elastic wrist cuffs and thumb loops are perfect and add some great functionality to the shirt when you need more sun protection on the hands or need the sleeves to stay out of the way when getting your hands dirty. Runs large like everything in the Technical Fishing line, Size down and you should be very happy. This is just my opinion, but there is really no better synthetic all-around baselayer out there.

This Sunshirt is a great addition to any outdoorsmans wardrobe. I wear it on the warmest of summer days and I am able to stay cool when hiking from lake to lake in the Uintas or climbing in down in Moab. The fit is like anything else in the Patagonia Technical Fishing series and runs relaxed, I find that a size down is generally a perfect fit for a sun shirt like this. If you have the Tropic Comfort already than this is a very similar shirt, however, the fabric is almost more of a tight jersey knit which attributes to its extreme breathability.

Do you love comfort? Do you love sunshine, bratwurst, bald eagles, and the good ole' US of A? Well then my friend you have found your next pair of premium under-jammies. These bad boys fit like they should in all the important places, and don't ride up like your old cotton undies with all the holes in them. Speaking of gross, throw those away and buy more of these boxer briefs already. Because your comfort is worth it, bro.

If you have any of the Jetboil or Eureka stoves with Jetlink Compatibility, then this little add-on burner is practically a no-brainer. I have the Gonzo grill, and with this little guy I can fire up a pot of coffee on the side while making some Bacon and pancakes on the griddle, or boil some pasta while grilling some chicken and veggies for dinner. Works perfect with all jetboil cups, and with the universal pot support, you can use any pot or skillet to cook on this bad boy. Simmer control works like a champ, and the regulator keeps overall fuel consumption low, making this one useful little burner for the glamping kit. There when you need it and stores in a cooking cup when you don't . Good work Jetboil!

Hurley is using Nike Dri-fit fabric in a lot of their gear lately, and I am digging it! These joggers are incredibly lightweight and breathable, making them perfect for warmer days on the trail when you just need some leg protection, as well as for your Yoga practice. I find that the fit is a little odd, being a bit narrow in the quad for a jogger, but relaxed enough through the calf and ankle. I originally ordered a small which was great in the waist but too snug in the thighs. Swapped for a medium and the Waist is tad big, but the drawstring takes care of that and the thighs fit like they should for a jogger.

I picked these slippers up on a whim for gym climbing and maybe a few after work boulder seshes. Immediately I was impressed with how comfortable these are even at a size below my street size. The rubber is plenty sticky for most practical purposes and I feel confident when edging on smaller chips or heel hooks. All and all these are a great pair of rock shoes, especially at the current price.

With how much of our lives are spent on our phones these days, a spare battery is just part of the kit we carry when leaving the house. This is a great little battery that charges my phone 2-3 times no problem, and a few camera batteries along the way. I am not a huge fan of the "flip" USB plug, as it makes plugging into certain ports a hassle, and it's not always possible to use because of this. Also, I could see this being the only real failure point of the device.
