Fit: Runs small

Size Purchased: 31

I initially purchased the Patagonia light and variable shorts and had to return them. These shorts are a much more regular fit whereas the light and variable were very small. These shorts have a little more play in the size as well. They are not stretch material like most boardshorts these days but they are lightweight and comfortable. I really like the the side zip pocket for wax in the water or a wallet at the bar afterwards. The 19 inch length ends just above the knee which is about my limit for length. Patagonia has paid attention to detail with these shorts. The drawstring closure matches the embroidered Patagonia emblem on the leg and there is even a double fly with hidden button to make sure everything stays together. I would say these run a size small in the waist based on all of my other boardshorts but as I said they have a lot of play in the waist which is nice.

The length of these shorts and material is absolutely perfect. Unfortunately, that is about all that Patagonia got right. These shorts don't just run a little small. If you buy them I would order up 2 sizes. I have decided not to reorder them because the drawstrings do not have any material on the interior to separate the strings from your lower stomach. Every pair of decent boardies I have ever purchased have material at this location. I'm really not sure how Patagonia dropped the ball here but they seem like they would really not be good to surf in as the drawstrings would be tangled in wax and hair. Maybe good for swimming but that's about it.
