Melissa Warren's Bio

Hello! I'm a Personal Gearhead here at Backcountry. I grew up in a little town called Poulsbo, WA, and moved to Salt Lake five years ago to be in a rad ski town for school. Since graduated and now spend my extra time climbing and skiing as much as I can!

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This sleeping bag kept me super warm on a 25 degree night when I was staying in a yurt. At first, the yurt was cold and it kept me super warm! Once it was heated up, I slept with the bag unzipped and it was perfect then as well!

This sleeping bag is also super light! We hiked (skinned) to the yurt and carried all of our gear, so having a light down bag that compresses well was key. This helped me keep my bag in a reasonable weight, while also being warm enough.

The shape of the bag is wider than my other bags, which was nice to have the extra space! It has a feature to attach to a Big Agnes sleeping pad as well, which would keep the bag in place as you move within and prevent it from twisting. Between that, the warmth, and the packability, I highly recommend this bag!

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
Fit: True to size

I got this as a gift for someone who lives in Seattle, and he has been loving it! He is usually a large, and the large fit him perfectly with a great "regular" fit. He usually wears it while walking around town casually, so it has been in plenty of rain and done well so far. It also has that soft feeling liner which isn't really insulating but does make it feel nicer on your skin, and he has loved that!

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have only used these boots a few times, but so far they have shown to be very durable and have great traction, and keep my feet comfy and dry. I've worn them hiking through small streams on the trail as well as through a hailstorm and that was great.

They did bite into my heel pretty bad on one side. I wear nice wool socks when hiking and generally avoid blisters very well. It may have a weird seam in my particular pair, so this may not be everyone's experience!

Otherwise, these boots fit well and true to size, with a mid to narrow foot.

One of my favorite things about hestra is the multitude of sizes and the ease of the sizing chart. So that was also on point here. Also, the glove has great mobility/dexterity which is awesome.

My only complaint here is that the glove isn't as warm as many of their other options, even though it's at the same price point. If your hands run warm, no problem though. They perform well for skiing and the random snowball fights, and my hands never got wet with the Goretex membrane! I just wish they were a little more insulated.

Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 5"
Weight: 130 lbs
Size Purchased: Small

This jacket is so great! First off - fit. I got a size small and am generally a small or sometimes a medium because of broader shoulders, but it works great. I also love the good length in the sleeves. Also the pit zips are full length which is a great feature and makes this jacket super versatile!

I've used this jacket tons while camping, climbing, and snowshoeing and it has been great for all of the wind, rain, hail, and snow it has encountered! The Goretex Paclite material is soft to the touch, but withstands the elements very well.

Highly recommend!

Super cute and amazing shell!

Size Purchased: 6

This jacket has completely exceeded my expectations - I was not familiar with Eider at all but they make a bombproof shell! The fabric is pretty thick which is awesome in a ski jacket - much warmer than a thin rain shell and I'm sure would stand up to any storm!

I wore it on a sunny day in Snowbasin, UT and the underarm venting kept me from getting too hot. The wrists have nice gaiters with thumb loops that are super soft and keep the wind off of your wrists.

I am generally a small, but sometimes need to size up in jackets due to having broad shoulders. The 6 is perfect! It's a comfortable fit with plenty of room for layering under, while still looking nice and slim! The length is also a great just past hip length.

Another favorite feature is the collar - it zips nice and high to keep your face warm and protected from the wind! It was great on the chairlifts. I could imagine touring in this shell as well, though as I mentioned it is a thick material so it's more geared toward resort use.

If you have any questions about this jacket or comparing with others, don't hesitate to reach out to me directly with my info listed above!

This shirt is so cute! It's a great basic paired with a scarf or on its own, and the material is so soft. I am usually a small but have broader shoulders, and this shirt fits well throughout. Not fitted, but drapes nicely. I wear it all the time!

This jacket packs down to about twice the size of my phone - tiny! It's super light and has a loop when packed into its pocket so is easy to clip onto a harness or pack. I've only used it in light rain and wind so far, and have it more as an emergency layer when I don't want to bring up a tougher rain jacket. While I feel like it would withstand tons of rain, it is a very thin material so just would be more susceptible to tear. Always the tradeoff with lightweight gear, but hasn't been an issue!

Fits well and true to size - a small fit me well and is my normal size.

Most women's flannels are a bit thin - this one has a good weight and is super soft and cozy! It does run big, but I still went with a small (my normal size) because I liked the loose fit. If you want it to be fitted definitely go down a size. Love love love!

This is the best lightweight protective layer! It is super thin so don't expect a ton of insulation, but it is perfect for light wind and a bit of extra warmth! It is best as an active layer, so awesome for running, climbing, hiking, etc. The fit is nice because you have space to layer a little under while still having a trim fit. Like most of OR's jackets, it can pack into the pocket and there's a loop to hook it to your harness or pack. Love this jacket!

I've only had this jacket for a short while so far but have used it while climbing and hiking. It's super breathable but still warm so it's great for active sports like that. I'm excited to use it while ski touring! The shell fabric is a tougher nylon, so should be better than a normal mid layer as a wind stopper.

The fit is good, and I wear a small and that's my usual size. I have broader shoulders and this isn't restrictive which is nice! The only thing I don't like is the lack of zippered pockets. The pockets are nice but just not quite as functional without the closure!

I've had this jacket for quite a while now and it has been amazing for cold nights in the desert, as a belay jacket, and everything in between! So I was very sad when I had an accident and ruined it... until Outdoor Research impressed me once again. Not a problem - a new one is on the on the way! Their Infinite Guarantee is killer - you probably won't need it because the quality is great but definitely nice to know!

My favorite thing about this jacket is how roomy it feels while still being a slimmer fit for a puffy. So good.

I have always thought these skirts were silly, but then find myself being cold with just a baselayer under sweats when camping. These were a cute solution for chilly nights! The length is great without being too long or too short, but just right to be warm. It was easy to move in, and runs true to size. I got a small, and am usually a 4 in pants.

These were bomb for ice climbing last winter. They are very dexterous and have good coverage, but with that comes a bit less insulation. So I would not recommend them if you're looking for the warmest gloves, but they're great for touring, ice climbing, and other active activities. I wear a size small which would be probably a women's medium.

I gave this to a friend for a trip climbing and it was a great belay layer! It is the kind of jacket that you put on if you were active and now are stopping and need some great warmth. It would also be a great alpine jacket, and the best feature is the cuffs at the wrist which allow your gloves to go over them easily, and keep out any wind or snow! He used a size medium, which was a great fit and he is 6'2" and 165lbs.

These are way cuter than I thought they would be! A great fit, I usually wear a small and that's what I got. The pockets are a nice size, and the elastic on the waist makes it a great fit. I've worn these hiking and bouldering, and they have done well for both and are a very durable material! Highly recommend.
