The Burton step-on system is a game changer, offering the same functionality and security of strap in bindings, but without the hassle of having to sit down or bend over to fasten rigid straps. I admit, I held back on my first run, not quite trusting this new system, however, I quickly realized I needn’t have worried. First, and most importantly, I didn’t notice any appreciable difference in performance, stability, or responsiveness. At no time did it feel squirrelly. That said, there is a bit of “give” between the board and binding which results in a squeaking sound when lifting my toes/going heelside. This was super unnerving at first, as it felt like the clips weren’t fully engaged, or that they were about to release. The more I rode though, I realized that that amount of flex is normal and does not affect performance. I now trust it at speed and on any terrain and don’t even notice the give at all. It’s just something that would’ve been nice to know at the start.
Also, the ability to immediately clip in and ride is awesome! Whether riding in powder or hiking, clipping in is no problem. Now my family of skiers no longer have to wait for me, nor do I have to freeze my hands off to strap in. The release levers are also conveniently placed and disengaging is super easy, while still feeling secure when riding. I now have clip-ins on both my powder and groomer boards and love them.
