Fly Fishing

Maia Menard's Bio

I love the outdoors. My main passion is fly fishing. It consumes most, if not all of my spare time these days. I love exploring all of the beautiful places it takes me to. I also love camping, hiking, running, bouldering, yoga and snowboarding.

I was so excited to try this, but it ended up looking like a nursing bra and didn't look right under a shirt and looked even worse by itself. I went with the Kari Traa Idunn bra instead and it's just as supportive but much much more attractive.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I lost one of my Simms Freestone boots that I had put over 300 days on but there weren't any left in my size so I got these Redington Sirens to replace them because I thought they had a nice design. While the felt sole is nice and grippy for fishing Oregon steelhead waters, the sole of the boot is so stiff it feels like walking on clunky wood planks.

Initially I thought they would soften up, but after just 10 days of wearing them, they are still stiff as a board, the stitching is already unraveled and I get severe lower back pain after just several hours of fishing. They fit my foot fine, but I can't feel my feet in them and it causes me to slip and trip all over the river, a problem I have never experienced in any other wading boot.

If you want stiff go with these, but if you want a boot that feels sturdy and comfy then I would definitely go with the Simms Vaportread, the Patagoina Ultralight Sticky or the Simms Freestone.

I have many merino products and am not sensitive to it at all, but I found this top mixed with the Nylon to be extremely itchy to the point where I had to take it off. I usually always wear between a small and a medium and can swap between the two for different styles, but this medium was waaaay too large. I could have done an XS or S, but then it's too short and very wide/boxy. Definitely more flattering throw on tops out there.

I got these as a more comfy alternative to my Dragons. I wanted a slipper and something with no laces and after trying a few I went with the men's blackwing over the womens for my wider foot. I am a women's size 6/36 eu, and I sized up to the women's 7.5/38 eu and they fit me like a glove.

This is definitely not an intro shoe or for those wanting a comfortable fit right out of the box. These aggressive shoes perform well in Joe's Valley or the gym.

I wear a women's 6/36 eu and ended up in a women's 8/39 eu. They fit like a glove, but just a warning, the initial break in period is very uncomfortable.

Patagonia FTW...Again
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times

This jacket is the perfect wading jacket, but you don't have to be an angler to appreciate the great fit and quality of Patagonia.

I'm 5'1, 120 lbs with a pretty athletic build. I can wear the S or M, but the S fits a little better in the sleeve length and less excess in the body with still enough room for a down sweater and a fleece underneath.

I've always struggled with packs I like and the chest pockets are easily accessible and perfect to fit 2-3 medium sized fly boxes, tippet spools, etc.

Have worn this fishing in torrential downpours of the PNW and Utah winters and it helped me stay warm and dry. Would highly recommend this jacket.

No flip cup with these...

These are a great alternative to the red plastic cup. Perfect for any occasion whether it's a backyard party, a beach picnic or a camping trip. They are durable and a study design so you don't have to worry about them cracking or tipping over.

Lightweight warmth

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Fit: True to size

Size Purchased: Medium

I'm 5'1, 120 lbs and am within the Medium measurements on the size chart. The jacket fits perfectly over layers and even has a little room to spare. I got the green color and while the body looks exactly as shown in the picture, the stretch panels look much brighter and is more of a contrasting color than shown. Not sure if that's the case with the other colors.

Due to the lack of winter weather, I haven't had a chance to really test it out yet. I did, however, wear it while moving a couch last night and it was great! The lightweight down was perfect for the 40 degree weather and the stretch panels allowed lots of arm movement without feeling restricted or like I was going to Hulk out of the jacket. I also ran into a stucco wall several times and thought for sure the sleeve ripped, but it didn't leave a scratch. Weighing only 8 oz. the jacket is super warm and packs down into its own sleeve about the size of a large grapefruit.

Highly recommend this jacket!

If you're tired of leg bagginess, but don't want to wear a skinny pant, try these! Got these for my boyfriend and they instantly became his favorite pants for climbing, lounging, hiking, camping and wet wading. The stretch offers lots of movement and they are super soft, yet surprisingly durable. They have endured miles of bushwhacking without a single snag or hole. Water rolls right off the DWR coating and they dry very quickly.

He is normally a 31-32 and while the 32-32 fit fine, they seemed a little longer than a normal 32 and he probably could have gone with the 30 inseam.

I got this jacket for my mom's birthday. She is 5'3, 115 lbs and the small fit her perfect. Here is what she had to say: "Fashionable and able to be worn in both casual and business settings. Love the print (forestland/drifter gray). Exactly as needed for PNW rain. Waterproofing is excellent. Hood is a good size and unobtrusive. Will wear it for many years."

I am normally a small but I got this in a medium and it is the perfect loose-ish fit. The fabric is 100% cotton but feels so soft and stretchy it almost seems like a modal or poly blend fabric. This is a great quality shirt and it doesn't seem like it will get those annoying holes where my jeans rub like all my other soft shirts.

I go with this in pretty much all trout fishing scenarios. It is stronger and doesn't cast a shadow like regular nylon tippets to spook pressured fish in gin clear water. Stronger knots mean less re-rigging flies and break offs and more landing fish.

I like this more than your average retractor. It feels sturdy and it actually doesn't come unpinned after a few hours. My only complaint would be that my forceps are a little on the heavy side and sometimes they pull the cord out, but hey at least I haven't lost them yet!

This is a great leader for anyone not wanting to make their own Euro Nymph leader. It is ultra sensitive to the tiniest of nibbles so you're sure to increase your hookups. Definitely try this out if you're looking to try something different from regular nymphing. Hit me up if you have any questions.

Between my boyfriend and I we've probably tried around 15 different Simms, fishpond and Patagonia bags and he says this is his favorite pack and the best one he's used so far. Unfortunately it wasn't the right fit for me, it's too big and can't adjust the strap to make it fit any tighter.

Features:
-Nicely padded strap can be easily adjusted to wear over right or left shoulder
-tool sheath and nipper/accessory port on strap for quick access
-tons of pockets and access to them on either side
-18L, large enough storage for all day trips

Pros:
-Zero sweep, so you don't get tangled in
your fly line
-Comfortable enough to wear all day
-mesh back help keeps your back stay cool

Cons:
-Doesn't have a waterproof pocket
-Not a good fit for small framed people

Overall I would recommend this pack to anyone who is looking for something large enough to fit lunch, several fly boxes, all the necessary accessories, a small extra layer and a rain jacket.

I got these in pants for me and my boyfriend (don't worry we don't wear them on the same days) and we both love them! They are super comfy to lounge around the house in, stylish enough to wear around town and durable/technical enough to wear fishing or hiking.

Fit/sizing:
They do run small as I am 5'1, 120 lbs and I got the men's size small and they fit pretty well, a tiny bit long but since they're a jogger style the elastic at the bottom keeps them from dragging. My boyfriend is 5'11 , 150 lbs with skinny legs and the medium fits perfectly.

Pros:
Stylish
Quick dry
Durable
Keeps you cool

Cons:
Loud (think George Costanza swooshy suit)
They don't make them in more sweet colors like the camo/hickory print
Things fall out of the front pockets super easy

If you're looking for a slimmer pant for lounging, traveling, hiking, or fishing that isn't your traditional baggy convertible pant, I would highly recommend the Patagonia baggies pant.

Fit: Runs large

I am a neutral runner with somewhat of a wide foot. I got these in my normal size 6 (1/2 size down from most brands of running shoes/sneakers) and they fit perfectly.

I love how lightweight and super breathable these shoes are. They kept my feet cool and dry while running in 95 degree heat.

These feature Adidas' patented Boost technology, which offers exceptional cushioning while still maintaining it's responsiveness. Boost is super durable and should feel the same from the first mile to the last (I will give you an update after I've logged a few more miles in these).

The Continental rubber on the outsole provides amazing traction, especially on wet surfaces. I recently ran a few miles in the rain and I could feel these shoes gripping the ground. I am pretty accident prone and felt really stable running in these on the wet pavement.

I got these in the Josie wash and am absolutely in love with them. They are super comfy and have a great mid-rise which is a must for me in denim. I'm 5'1, 120 lbs, I got a size 26 and they fit perfect. I wear anywhere from a 25-27 in jeans typically. The length is perfect which is rare for me. It has a little bunchiness, but I like to cuff them at the bottom anyway.
