Cozy, comfortable, with a few flaws
4 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought these to hike with in my new Xero Shoes Daylite Hikers, which were a great move as the Daylite Hikers are snuuug! So these slim socks work perfectly. They are quite warm, soft, and cozy. I've hiked a few moderate day hikes with them as well as my daily walks and not had a single problem biomechanically-speaking. As an 8.5 women's, I sized up to the Medium after speaking with the very helpful Backcountry customer service and they fit just dandy.
However, they have a few cons: I wish I had bought the ankle socks, as the tube above the ankle is VERY snug, too snug for my comfort. Maybe some folks like that compression, but I do not at all. So I have to fold them over anyways which defeats the purpose of having the tall tube. And THAT exposes the major weakness of these socks.... BEWARE VELCRO OR BRAMBLES!!! Just don't go near it! The elastics that go around the upper tube are not enclosed at all, so you brush up against one piece of velcro or something sticky when the upper tube is folded over, it grabs all those little elastic strings and creates numerous pulls and snarls that are then vulnerable to more damage. It's happened to 3 of the 4 pairs I have now. These two flaws make me wish I could modify the socks (or that I had bought the ankle socks instead), but stretchy material is very hard to sew (at least for me). So, keep that in mind if you are considering the taller pair of toe socks.
Other than those two issues, I love these socks!
