Classic Knit Beanie
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Just like the "LBD" (little black dress) is something every woman should own, I suggest that this classic beanie is the winter equivalent. It is warm and a relaxed, medium fit so that it sits relaxed on any head. I wear it folded, but you can also go for the slouchy style. The knit is super soft, not scratchy at all, and the Scandinavian pattern is lovely- not too girly and not too trendy- classic.

Practical and Pretty
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 10"
Size Purchased: one size

I wear this all the time working out and it keeps my hair out of my face beautifully. The real value is that I will also wear it out on the town- the double elastic look is sort of retro and can actually dress up a messy pony tail and jeans nicely. I have had mine for almost two years and it has not lost any of it's elasticity!

Great looking workout pants!
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 10"
Size Purchased: large

Not every yoga pant is created equal. Unlike some of its rivals, these pants actually let my lower body breath. The x-cool fabric works, so that my muscles remain supple and warm in a workout (or running errands), but allow extra heat to escape. And the fit is great- super versatile for different preferences- I love that you can have a high waist or fold it for a hip hugger look. It allows me to match it up with different tank tops and moods easily. And the fabric is quality. It is not losing its shape, even after multiple uses and I need it to continue to hug all the right places (a little spandex lift never hurt anyone). The pants enhance my body AND performance.

Lightweight and Bright!
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 10"
Size Purchased: medium

I love this shirt for hot days outside or hot days in the gym-- the super lightweight x-cool fabric keeps you cool and dry, plus as much as I like tank tops, I like to switch it up with a t-shirt, especially to protect my shoulders from the sun. It has a night loose, comfortable fit. It is a nice length- not too short and not too long which works well for layering when the temperatures fluctuate.

Multi Purpose Jacket
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 10"
Size Purchased: medium

I grab this jacket for virtually every weather condition. On cold days in the winter, it will be layered under my shell, when I am touring or hiking or trekking, it is perfect for the varying weather I encounter. It is the venting system that makes it so versatile. Regulate is the key word. The flow technology really does let your body heat flow- when I am warm I open up the vents and air instantly enters my chest area cooling my whole body off. On the flip side once I zip them back up the super comfy fleece lining, plus thin layer of high yield insulation and outer fabric cuts wind and keeps in heat. I especially love it on the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) when I am transitioning into and out of winter.

Clever Design
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 10"
Size Purchased: medium

The lifa/merino wool combo is unparalleled for warmth and comfort, and when you add the flow technology that is what sets this piece apart. It is not a gimmick- the teeny cut outs (look like polka dots) in the inside lifa fabric make it so that less fabric actually sits against your skin. I was skeptical (since wouldn't that be less warm?), but it actually encourages your body heat as a layer of warmth, plus it makes it easier for moisture to move away from your skin. I was and still am impressed. And I love the high neck for a little extra warmth on the neck as well as the attractive/flattering design. It is a body hugging cut so if you want a more relaxed fit, you might want to order a size up.

Makes Me Feel Good- Inside and Out
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 10"
Size Purchased: medium

This hybrid raincoat takes everything to the next level. I spend a lot of time in Seattle and once fall begins, the rain is COLD and the wind is STRONG. No rain is getting through (not even a drop when I had to run through a squall from the ferry to an uber) and the insulation gives me that little extra warmth, especially in the morning, against the elements so that I don't get that chill I had become so accustomed to. And I love the stripes. Just because it is cold and dingy doesn't mean I can't be bright and cheery. I like the nautical angle and if the storm subsides and it gets warmer, the raincoat is so stylish that I happily wear it even when the sun is shining. And the belted trench look is flattering on every shape, and due to it's length, height as well. My best friends are 5'2'' and 5'7'', and I am 5'10'' and we all feel good and look great.

Tried and True

It is called original for a reason! Once you figure something out this good, you don't screw around with it. The Lifa technology keeps me dry and the breathability keeps me comfortable- add how lightweight it is and it is the ultimate all purpose outdoor shirt. I wear it skiing, but I probably use it more often the rest of the year hiking, biking, climbing, and lounging. It is a more fitted athletic fit (not too tight, but more fitted), so if you like your clothes a little roomier you may want one size bigger than you normally get. A great all around piece, the famous chevrons definitely get me a nod of approval from many outdoor enthusiasts.

Cute and Cozy.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My hands get chapped and torn up from the winter no matter how hard I try to take care of them. These cozy merino wool/synthetic blend mittens are the slippers I give my hands when I am out running errands or out on the town- really anytime I'm not skiing. They also work well for a casual snowshoe or early winter jog due to the sound construction and surprising durability.

Super Dexterity
4 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When you are on the side of a steep mountain trying to transition from touring to skiing, it is a precarious situation. These gloves ensure that you can get all the little hooks, zips, clamps, and clicks taken care of without your hands freezing to the alarming ache of numbness OR a glove taking the trip down the slope before you. They are that maneuverable. The primaloft insulation is not too bulky- you get the most bang for the buck without sacrificing dexterity which is imperative when you are in the backcountry- from taking skins on and off, to (knock on wood) pulling the handle on your airbag. They are not the warmest glove ever, but if you ski hard it is plenty- sweaty hands are cold hands. The waterproof membrane insert definitely does the job and the adjustable gaitor is a great detail, especially on a powder day. Comfortable and effective.

Cute, but not cold.

The "bear fur" (which is synthetic) is soft and cozy and there is no hat that is as warm or as fun as this. I wore it to snowblow my driveway when it was 20 below and then three days later I wore it so the premiere of a film festival- it was equally effective in both cases. My head and ears were comfortable in the terribly cold weather and a famous actress (okay, maybe on the brink of famous) gave me a compliment on the great knit pattern. I like it equally with the ears down or up. Definitely better for colder climes, but it makes an impact everywhere. And it is lower profile trapper hat than most with a nice fit and not too much fur.

Pom Party All The Way!
4 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: True to size
Size Purchased: one size

Arguably the heart of a hat is its pom and, if that is true, this hat has a huge heart. And that being said, this knit hat is not for the faint at heart. But that is what makes it special. I got smiles and people coming up to chat while I wore this hat more than any other piece of clothing or accessory I wore all year. It kind of seems like the equivalent of wearing a sign that says, "Yeah, I like to party." Besides the substantial pom it is beautifully made in a chunky knit with a great design. Super comfortable and you can wear it folded (I do) or more floppy. And the best part is this: the pom comes off. So on those days you want to remain anonymous, that's cool too. There are different types of parties, after all!

A personal favorite!
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: Runs small
Height: 5' 10"
Size Purchased: Medium

The versatility of this baselayer makes it a perfect piece for an adventure where you need every item to have multiple uses. On one trip I used it while skiing hard in cold, unforgiving temps, in a studio under hot, bright lights, jogging through an ancient city, AND even wore it on a nine hour flight. The LIFA/merino wool combo regulates moisture and temperature extremely well. Definitely on the warmer side of the spectrum due to the wool, it still manages to adapt to the conditions and your body. And it's super cute- the stitch lines and designs are slimming and there is a little stretch to flatter all body types. It runs a little more fitted due to the stretch (to make sure it is form fitting, I'm guessing) so if you want a little more room, I might get a size larger than normal. I like it fitted and have a medium, but thought it was worth mentioning.

Warm , dry, and happy.

The combination of LIFA technology and merino wool is akin to the beautiful marriage of peanut butter and jelly. Just like I can ear a pb and j sandwich every day, I wear this baselayer every day. The Lifa synthetic material expels any moisture from my skin which then evaporates from the natural wool fiber. Dry = warm. And comfortable. Often I find myself after a day skiing lounging in them the rest of the day. I am tall, but my legs aren't Heidi Klum length so they are still long enough and not too long for a shorter woman. If it is late spring and I'm going touring, I know I will be sweating to the oldies in which case I might choose a lighter baselayer, but 93%* of the time this is my go-to.

*Not a scientific percentage, more of an gut approximation and I wanted to use an asterisk.

I don't leave home without it.

I come from the ski racing side of the winter microcosm and when we would strip down to our race suits in below zero weather, the layer I shed that I felt most severely was the neck warmer- and this applies even more so in the backcountry or powder skiing. You lose a copious amount of heat through your head and neck area so I wear a helmet (for heat is one reason) and a neck warmer. This is a light variety so you won't feel like it is a neck brace and it allows you to breath easily through it, and as for keeping you warmer it makes a world of difference. I wear it no matter the weather. On cold days it gets tucked under my goggles bandito style, and even on warm days I tend to wear it up as sun and wind protection. Skiing wreaks havok on your skin and this neckie has saved me from resembling a leather handbag (for at least a few more years.). I wear it skiing and hiking as well, it often becomes a headband, skull cap, and handkerchief all in one adventure!

Outdoor Staple
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When it comes to being outdoors, I want a hat that is comfortable, durable, and stylish. The Outline Beanie is all those things- the elasticity is just enough so that it will stay on in high winds, but not too snug so that it feels like it is squeezing your brain like a lemon. The simplicity and fit plus simple graphic make for a classic style as well. And it is warm, but the knit is loose enough that it allows for some fluctuation in head temperature. Whether I am hiking a mountain in the fall or touring up a mountain in the winter, it's what I grab first. It runs a little bigger (more of a mens fit than unisex), so for those of us (yup, we have to stick together) with bigger heads or more hair, this is a perfect fit.
