I bought this jacket for my son hoping that the expansion part works. I haven't figured it out yet, but I sized up so he can at least get a couple winters out of it. What matters most is that it has done great at keeping him warm and dry. Don't let the lightweightedness of it fool you; your child will stay warm, even with minimal layering. It also kept the little dude dry in heavy, cold downpours. You'll want to plop a beanie on their head, though, as the hood isn't quite adequate enough as the rest of the jacket is.

The hoodie fits nice and snug against the body, making it great for a midlayer. If you prefer to wear it more as a basic hoodie, you might want to size up for a little extra room. It doesn't provide much warmth by itself once the temperature dips into the 50's and below, however. I'm not sure polartec is all that great, though, especially for the price across multiple brands - most of which seem to be made in Vietnam and Indonesia. For the same price and perhaps better quality, you can get other brands made in the US, Canda, and Europe. The hoodie looks great and feels nice, but I'm not sure I could recommend it at this price point, even from a quality brand like Montane.

Well, I was sent the wrong color combo, one that isn't advertised on this site. Backcountry said I could return it when they get the one I ordered back in stock, but I decided to stick with what I got. Anyway, that's beside the point. The jacket is lightweight and has a nice retro vibe to it. The material is water resistant, but you'll definitely get soaked in a downpour (my wife also got one and decided to wear it in heavy rain - not a good idea). That being said, this thing gets HOT. I thought I could wear it in the 40's, but the jacket heated up really quickly. Wore it again in the 20's and that was a much better, but I still got pretty warm, so I wouldn't recommend doing too much layering. As far as sizing goes, it fits well but seems to be a little shorter compared to other Columbia gear I have. It fits comfortably at my waist, but if you want he extra length, you'll want to size up.

I wanted a good coat but didn't want to break the bank doing so. With the jacket being on sale and having good reviews, I figured this would be the one for me. As always, Columbia sizing is great, and the inner fleece is very comfortable. I was hesitant when I got the jacket due to how lightweight it is, and eventually it got put to the test. It kept me perfectly warm in mid-20's weather while simply wearing a t-shirt underneath. I even got a little hot. Then the downpour came, and I stayed dry for a the few hours I was out in the rain. I'll continue to put it to the test with winter visits to Milwaukee and Seattle in the next month. I don't expect to be disappointed.

The jacket is well put together and incredibly warm. They do tell you that the color variation will be off, so be aware that is true. It's not dramatic but not like pictures. It offers pretty good neck protection, and the hood is comfortable to wear. It does fit incredibly true to size, so you'll want to size up if you want a little extra space. Oh yeah, this thing is HEAVY. If you're wanting lightweight, look for something else.
