Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size
I purchased these boots for use on everything from simple day hikes to extended-length backpacking trips. I wanted a product that was versatile enough to serve as a single solution for these uses. The Bora2 GTX Mid is precisely that; sure, they're overkill for causal use, but they're so lightweight and comfortable they serve the purpose perfectly well, while also being built tough enough for long backpacking trips.
The fit is important to get right, and you'd be well advised to spend time ensuring your fit is spot on. I typically wear between a 12.5 and a 13, and due to the slightly narrow design of these boots, I opted for the 13. Once I got them on, I realized they didn't fit quite right, and that the slight heel slip would be sure to yield blisters. Thanks to Backcountry's excellent support team, I had an RMA slip and a pair in 12.5 at my house in no time. Once fit perfectly, these boots really started to shine. Out of the box fit is excellent, but they continue to get better with use. This is obviously typical during break-in of a new boot, but I didn't expect it as much with these, primarily due to the materials used. I was wrong; they continue to fit better and get more comfortable with more use.
Regarding waterproofness, I'll admit I haven't stood in tubs of water to prove the point like others have, but I can attest to the waterproofness of these boots during field use. I've hiked in the rain, snow, mud, etc. If what you're traversing isn't deeper than the inner boot is high, you're not getting wet, simple as that. And due to the breathability of the GoreTex inner bootie, sweat is able to make its great escape, allowing my feet to remain comfortable and dry no matter what I trudge through.
About the inner bootie, it took a moment of getting used to, but now I love the design. The fit feels custom; comfort is exceptional. And on backpacking trips, I love the flexibility of being able to use the bootie as a kick-around shoe for camp, without the weight of carrying a second set of footwear.
Support and traction are both excellent on this boot as well. I've done a substantial amount of side-hilling in these boots; the tough outer boot provided tons of support for my ankles while the fantastic Vibram outsoles ensured I never lost my footing. Grip for days on ascents and descents alike.
The only negative I could level against the Bora2 GTX Mid is the supplied insoles; these were immediately replaced with a set of green Superfeet to ensure optimal comfort and support, and to reduce fatigue. This is typical on pretty much any boots, so perhaps not worth mentioning. But there, I mentioned it.
In summary, these boots definitely DO live up to the hype in my opinion. Arc'teryx have hit a home run with these outstanding, versatile boots and when I wear them out (hopefully not for a long, long time), I'll be back for another pair. Buy with confidence; these really are a fantastic product.
