Objective Truth - The Best Carry-On
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I just returned from two weeks hopping around Europe using the Mystery Ranch Mission Rover bag. If you've ever flown internationally, you know that they will find any reason to not let you bring your bag on board. The Mission Rover is the absolute best dimension for an overhead carry-on as you can see from my photo... and will never have to be checked or put under the plane! If you're a smart packer, you could bring only the Rover and a backpack on a multi-week trip. Another awesome thing about the Rover is that you can carry it three different ways (shoulder strap, handles, and backpack straps (which fold away nicely if not being used and you never even know they're there). Besides being the most functional travel bag I've ever used, Mystery Ranch puts an unbelievable amount of time and energy into the zip and buckle design on their bags. They're bombproof. If you haven't tried a Mystery pack or bag yet, you'll be impressed!

I got the Wahweap as a gift for a friend and this is what he thinks -

"The Wahweap are a really sharp looking pair of shoes - great for around town or in a more casual work environment. I have yet to use them for hiking or for other activities where performance is important, however, I get the sense they are best left to casual activities"

The Grafton is Altra's first go at a technical high end outdoor shoe and they nailed it. Having a full vibram outsole and durable abrasion resistant sticky rubber all around, it can take the nastiest granite boulder scrambles. Though, It still has the comfort of a running shoe and will get you down the mountain as easy as most trail runners do. Another prime feature of the Grafton is the suede upper which is soft while also durable (and looks badass). The only thing I'd change is having a little higher of an arch, and putting a carabiner loop on the back heel.

Marmot made a great move combining one of the most trusted tents on the market with a 0 deg Never Summer. I love the comfort and livability of the Limelight. You'll see lots of other tents out there claim to have more room because of floor space, but take into account the zone construction of the Limelight while you're sitting or want more head room and you'll be impressed. Also, the value here will be tough to beat!

This is the perfect kit for someone just getting into backpacking! If you're looking for a reliable, durable and light set up, the Limelight paired with the Sawtooth makes for a killer combo. Keep things simple and save a few bones while you're at it.

A long time favorite, the Trestles has stepped it up again. The Elite is now ECO, having fully recycled materials outside of the zipper. This 20 degree is my favorite out of the three temperatures and I find myself reaching for it almost any month out of the year. Marmot also obviously put a lot of thought into the hood and toe box construction. They hug around your body perfectly and the efficient design keep you warm and cozy.
