Jay Hampton's Bio

By Jay Hampton

I was introduced to skiing and rock climbing as a kid in the Sierras. My family eventually moved to Idaho where I continued to explore the Idaho mountains and ski at Bogus Basin, Brundage and Sun Valley, with occassional climbing sessions at Black Canyon and City of Rocks.
During college, I took a semester off and completed an 80-day Colorado Outward Bound WLS where I did a ton of mountaineering, rock climbing and canyoneering. I thought I was going to be a guide.
Now that I have kids of my own, my focus is on training them up with a love for the outdoors and trying to steal a little time away for myself to mountain bike and ski.

Biggest investment I have ever made in a jacket but totally worth it. The Gore-Tex Pro fabric combats all harsh weather. Jacket has a slim, tailor-made fit that I would expect from Mammut. Nice long sleeves with wide wrist cuffs that easily fit over a pair of gloves. Features for days. So stoked.

Bought this coat for my wife and she absolutely loves it. We live in a mountain town and once the temps dropped and the snow was flying, she was definitely not warm enough on her legs. The duster style of this coat has kept her thighs and rear toasty.

We bought this mitt for our son because he was complaining about cold fingers in his other cheap REI mitts. These Reusch mitts feature super-durable construction, high quality leather and a really nice liner. He has spent multiple days out on the hill in these mitts, ranging from super cold to heavy and wet snow with zero complaints. My only problem with the mitt is that it doesn't feature a wrist closure which seems to be a missing element across the Reusch line. These gloves WILL come off in the event of a high speed yard sale.

Fit: Runs large

I'm 5'9" and 175 lbs and was swimming in the Medium. Jacket features are solid but I am returning to find something that has a better fit. The red color shown in the photo is not accurate to the jacket's actual color. Actual color has more orange in it as in not a true red. Great jacket, just wasn't right for me.

The Giro Vault helmet has some great styling to it and is adequate for the job, but there are a few issues to be aware of. First off, inside the helmet there are a few plastic parts that are part of the fit system which can press against the head. Both my son and wife have complained about the same plastic part digging into their head. You can press the plastic back into place and this seems to eliminate the pressure point. Unfortunately this helmet can also produce the gaper gap if you aren't diligent about the fit, so be aware that a thin beanie underneath may be required.

We picked this jacket up for our 5 year old Son and it has worked really well. The coat runs a little large and when you factor in the growth extension feature he will probably be in this coat until he is 10. So great value there. One other issue is the hood does not cinch down that well. But he has stayed really warm in this coat on the ski hill.

Great glove, super comfortable and the leather broke in quickly after applying the supplied leather treatment. Approx. 10 degrees F was the cutoff point for me, before these gloves no longer kept my fingers warm.

Just picked this up and it is already one of the most valuable accessories I own. Super effective at keeping the wind off your neck while skiing. Also have worn it over the face on super cold days and it does a great job keeping your nose warm.

Hats off to Full Tilt for thinking of the parent's pocketbook here. First day on the hill and my son was comfortable in these boots. Plan to get 3+ seasons with my son on these boots, then pass them on to my daughter for 4+ season. Absolutely great concept. If you are wondering, the liner has a neoprene sock toe piece, that is how the liner expands as your kid's foot grows. Great concept.

Just got this ski for my son. The Indy features a rockered tip that assists in avoiding any edges catching during turns. My son had an easy time turning this ski. The best feature, as a parent, was the easy assembly of the binding to the plate (took literally 1 minute to set up his bindings). Great ski for the price.

Great Jacket

Our daughter absolutely loves this coat. We got the blue with reversible pink fleece on the inside. Generous hood and zip keep her comfy in the harshest weather. Sleeves are a little long so we have to roll them up. Overall, well worth the money.

For a solid resort/sidecountry binding I have been really happy with The Duke. They are super durable and have nice features like the toe adjustment between alpine and tech soles. Only complaint is that after touring you have to clear all the snow to lock the ski back into ski mode and it can be a bit of a pain in the ass. But I have been on multiple tours where I am set to go downhill and my partners are still effing around with their Fritschis, etc. I would not use them on long tours however, go with a tech binding.

Got this jacket for my 5 year old son. Fits true to size and seems to be very warm. Nice reversible print on the inside. We got the blue, inside is blue and black stripes. Only complaint is the reversible side does not have pockets. But, our son loves this jacket it is his go-to for most cold days up in Park City. Definitely would recommend this jacket.

Patagonia consistently delivers the best fitting trucker hat. I have the black Patagonia "Badge" hat. The raised badge logo gets a lot of compliments. Order it, you won't be disappointed.
