Familiarity: I've used it several times

Although a bit of a splurge given the price--there are cheaper options that will generally get the job done--this works, it works fast, and it gives me peace of mind no matter the water source. I like the freedom of being able to go anywhere and everywhere without worrying about whether I will find a suitable water source (if you haven't seen MSR's promotional video for this being tested in the Cordillera Blanca then definitely check it out below; that's what sold me on it and I have not been disappointed). Now my entire group drinks with confidence no matter the water source!

I prefer this spike protector over the BD due to its simplicity relative to the awkward tie-off on the BD spike protector, but I prefer the BD pick and adze protector over this pick protector simply because the BD covers the adze too (granted that the adze is far less problematic to leave uncovered than the pick and spike). That said, this pick protectors is perfectly functional. If you're on a budget then spend $10 on this one; if you can afford another $10 then get both this one for the spike protector and spend another $10 for the BD pick and adze protector.

The plastic is terrific but, as others have noted, the tie-off to secure this on the axe is awkward. It has fallen off several times in various situations. The similar BD pick and adze protector is my top choice on that end, but for the spike I prefer the simplicity of the Petzl protector.

I have three of these bags and love them. I initially chose this bag simply because I like the look of this bag better than the BD, Petzl, and Camp bags. I have no complaints about them. They have enough space to (snugly) fit a pair of crampons and a pair of gaiters, which works perfect for me because I typically only use gaiters to protect my pants from crampons. I've used them for a few seasons now and they are all still as good as new (note: I always use the Camp spike protectors when storing my crampons in these bags).

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have a set of these for each of my five pairs of crampons (2 Petzel, 3 Grivel) and love them. Honestly, I don't know why/how anyone would go without them. With these on, I have zero worries about punctures when tightly packing my crampons in their cases with gaiters and/or straight in my pack.

Fit: True to size

Weight: 205 lbs
Size Purchased: Extra-large

As I wrote in my review a few years ago, if I could think of a use for a second coat of the same weight, I'd buy the same one again. My sentiment hasn't changed after a few years, and I followed through with that previous statement. Once my first one had some use on it in the field, I decided to buy another for "city" use and keep the more worn one for field use.

I tried several coats and this was the winner, and I knew it from the second I put it on. I'm in love with this coat; it's stylish, form-fitting, and warm. If I could think of something to do with a second coat then I'd buy the same one again.
