James Griffin's Bio

I recently relocated to the mountains of Utah from the beaches of Florida so I could take advantage of all the outdoor activities Salt Lake City has to offer. When not in the office I can be found riding my bike, running with my dog Murphy or camping in one of the many canyons we have close by. I also love traveling the country, competing in triathlons, and checking out local breweries along the way!

Aero
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

If you are in the market for a stiff aero race steed you owe it to yourself to checkout Cervelo's S3 disc. The fully internal wiring setup of the Shimano Di2 R8070 drivetrain gives this bike a super clean cockpit free of wires and housing. Impressive stopping power gives you confidence heading into the turns as well as helping you avoid that careless driver (which I discovered firsthand on my first ride).
Your can really put some power through this bike. It accelerates on command and handles better than I would have expected. Descending the steep canyons here in Utah is a breeze and you can hold your line in cross winds without too much trouble.
Sizing for Cervelo is based on Stack and Reach which makes it easy to get you on the right frame size. The 56 fit me perfectly at 6' and a 32" inseam.

These are easily my favorite warm weather bib. The perforated fabric helps keep me cool both in the dry Utah summers and the muggy Florida weather. The length is a little longer than others but fits me great and provides a nice amount of compression.
The straps are also perforated and wide enough to rest comfortably on your shoulders without cutting in or rolling up.
Sizing is a lot more realistic than other Italian made cycling apparel and I have not seen any issues in workmanship.

These are extremely lightweight running shorts that allow a great deal of airflow for hot training days. I was a little skeptical about the waist band at first but it actually works great and the way it's designed allows the shorts to dry extremely quickly. They are decent length for a true running short vs some that look more like underwear. Haven't actually used the front pocket but it looks like it would do that job well.

These boots can do it all from endless laps at the resort to long tours in the backcountry. They fit me great right out of the box but can be heat molded to accommodate just about any foot. The range of motion is not the best but I find that keeping the top buckle and strap loose while skining makes a big difference. I sized down to a 27.5 and my typical shoe size is an 11.

High Performance trail crusher

I have been running in these exclusively for the last 2 months now. They easily handle a variety of trails from dry and dusty to wet and muddy to snow covered. The rubberized upper provides some added protection as well as helping to shed dirt and snow. They still have plenty of flex in the toe box without any awkward flex points. The QuickLace system works perfectly with the Sensifit upper to hug your foot nicely and minimize hotspots. My longest run in these has been 8 miles but they have the cushion and support to keep you going for hours.

To say I love this shirt would be an understatement.
It has the perfect athletic fit with clean lines tailored from an incredibly soft stretchy merino wool. It can also be worn in a multitude of different settings from the office to the bar making it extremely functional.
I will be heading to Europe this summer and looking to pack light to avoid lugging too much with me on the trains. This will be exactly what I need as it is naturally antimicrobial and can easily be worn for multiple days without washing. The light weight breathable design is also great for the warm summer months
I am 6'1" and about 175# and the large size fits exactly as I would want. If it were any smaller though I would size up to an XL so keep that in mind. Since this is a wool top pay attention to the washing instructions for Icebreaker and do not throw it in the dryer.

This is a very functional ski touring pack. Convenient storage of avy gear that is easy to get to in a hurry. Plenty of storage for all of your other gear for a long day in the Backcountry. A couple of things that could be improved is the hydration bladder storage and helmet carry. Both get the job done but could be improved.

The ADV Skin 5L was already my favorite hydration vest but they made some slight changes to this years version. The straps are a little easier to secure on this model and the pocket configuration makes it easier to access things on the move.
Still sits up nice and high on the torso to minimize unwanted movement. The lightweight construction wont hold you back and it has enough storage to carry everything you need while out on the trail.

This jacket has it all! It is lightweight, waterproof and breathable. Snaps together with my Rush LT bibs to keep the snow out. Pass pocket conveniently located on the sleeve. Durable face fabric holds up well while skiing the trees.
Works great for layering or with just a t-shirt underneath like I have already done a few times this spring.

Great Travel Bag
4 5

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This bag has some really awesome features. Stands up by itself giving you access to the top pocket. The main compartment opens all the way giving you full access to load and unload gear without having to dig thru the whole bag.
The laptop pocket is plenty big enough for a full size laptop, the opening however makes it very difficult to fit anything other than a macbook.

These boots filled a big void for me and are now my go to for just about everything. The Salomon Quest 4D has been my do everything trail boot but are often overkill for everyday use. The Outline gives you incredible versatility allowing me to wear them to the office and head straight to the trail after I finish for the day.
The GTX liner keeps you feet dry while still giving you great breath-ability. I find that they also work a little better with micro spikes because of the trail runner profile.

Perfect Weekend Carry-On
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I took this on a recent trip to Florida and was extremely pleased. It is the perfect size for a carry on and fits more than you would think. Everything is held in place really well so you don't have to worry about things falling out when you go to open it. This makes it really easy to open and remove your laptop when going through security. The zippers also have a built in TSA lock that secures them to the case itself.

Solid shell

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: Runs large
Height: 6' 1"
Weight: 175 lbs
Size Purchased: Large

Overall very pleased with this jacket. When I first put it on I thought, this thing is huge. After wearing it on the mountain, I think it's a combination of being a little large as well as having a larger style. If that makes any sense. Typically I'm between a medium and large in jackets and would definitely go with a medium in this one.
I like that it has nice deep pockets, definitely saved me when I left one open like a knucklehead on a pow day.
I don't think it blocks out cold wind as well as other shells but it does pretty well.
No powder skirt which is a plus for me. Get a good pair of bibs and you won't need it.

While these gloves may have been designed with alpine and ski touring in mind, I have come to use them for just about every outdoor winter activity. I keep them in my truck at all times and bust them out whenever needed. Walking the dog in the snow or throwing chains on my tires they have served me well. They come with a good amount of wax already applied so they do need a little breaking in. The leather is a little tougher than similar options that you might find from other brands. So if you like that soft feel maybe look at a different option but if you want something rugged these will fit the bill. Sizing is true and is consistent with most other brands on the site. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

This is an inexpensive functional jacket that I keep in my pack at all times. When the weather takes a turn, the Agile wind jacket gives you the protection you need to get back to shelter. It retains some heat for when the wind picks up as well as protecting against light rain.
Because it's light and packable you can keep it stowed at all times and pull it out when you need it.
