Ian Saukerson's Bio

I grew up in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, spent some time in Nashville/Appalachia, currently wandering the Great Basin from my Salt Lake City home base.

When I was 10 I purchased a Snickers at the local convenience store and the clerk told me to take it easy. I've been living my life by that mantra ever since. BIG fan of the scenic route, I think Backcountry actually created the #slowroad campaign for me specifically. My favorite part of skiing is sitting on top of the hill watching the light change. My favorite part of fishing is watching the fish swim by, impervious to my bait. My favorite part of backpacking is finding that perfect spot for a long lunch. And a nap.

I've always been happiest when I've been outside and the only thing that I enjoy more than the places I go is the people I meet. So give me a shout and we'll talk adventures (:

These are probably the only shorts I'll ever buy. I was delighted to see Kuhl didn't update much for this season except the colors, because why fix something that isn't broke? 8" inseam is a perfect length for me, ensuring my thighs get Vitamin D'd. There's a good stretch in the material making the waist comfy even after you're on Beer 7 and go back for a third plate at your buddy's 4th of July BBQ. The multiple pockets are super useful, whether you're backpacking for several days or out running errands and need to stay organized. They're also mesh which means the whole piece dries lightning quick if you need to ford a waist-deep river crossing. The pic attached is from the 2016 model, but like I said - nothing's changed but the colors.

Back in the day I used to get a handful of flip flops for $2 each at Old Navy and they would last me a summer before the heel was worn through. Whatever, though, right? I'm only out $10 and then I just spend another Jefferson next spring. But as I'm getting older I've been paying more attention to my footprint on the planet and trying to invest in higher quality products with greater durability even if the cost is considerably higher. So I bought my first pair of Reefs about 6 years ago and now I'm onto my third pair and, in my experience, they typically last me 3 seasons. So at $30 I'm basically spending the same amount of money but am getting a more comfortable product and only putting i pair of flip flops into the landfill for every 15 Old Navy Flips like I used to. Big win, all around.

SAME! This bad boy comes with three total keys so you can lose at least two of them before you head to the Lowes to get a new key made. I also like that it comes with an easy-to-install mounting bracket for your seat tube to look extra clean when in transit.

The Great Salt Lake doesn't afford many opportunities for recreational water sports or activities and, despite my best efforts, I've yet to marry or become best friends with someone that has a pool in their backyard. Needless to say, $60 is a lot to spend on some swim trunks. However I am pretty in love with everything about these shorts. Perfect balance between "I'm here for a good time" and "I want to offend your grandparents" with just a slight dash of "I lost my phone, but at least I have my car keys."

Size is perfect. I got the medium and the hem rides about 2" above my knee when standing(pic related) and then exposes a good amount of thigh when I'm sitting. Not R-rated exposure, but quite satisfactory for the Thigh Positive crowd. No inner lining, which is awesome, and the material isn't obnoxiously synthetic. They dry super fast, though.

The real kicker is I went to a pool in Vegas and a girl actually talked to me. This maybe is a common occurrence for some, i mean you see dudes with bodies Chris Hemsworth would respect. But it doesn't generally happen to skinny chicken leg me. Not only was this girl who talked to me WAAAAAY out of my league from a physical standpoint, but she even offered to get me a drink! I was perplexed and politely declined(the hangover from the night before was sincere) but I thought it was a nice gesture. Not an hour goes by and ANOTHER beautiful woman, who was already carrying a drink, asked me the same thing! Again, I'm not accustomed to random women asking to get me a drink so it caught me off guard. As I haven't changed much in the last decade or so, I can only assume the increased interest was due to these shorts. Worth the investment, for sure.

Good for backpacking, too. Or really any extended trip where you need to save space in your pack and want to only bring two pairs of underwear. I wear them in the shower, get them good and lathered, then use them as a loofa for the rest of my body. Make sure you rinse them out good before you hang them up to dry, though.

These are solid shorts, I've used them for kickball and short jogs around the park the last couple weeks. They dry out super fast. My one gripe would be the inner liner isn't super secure. I don't usually choose shorts with liners as I'm not an aggressive runner/athlete, so maybe you always wear briefs with them? That seems like a waste of fabric to me, though. Otherwise the cut is perfect, they ride just above the knee when standing and show some thigh when you bend the knees. The waist is perfect without needing to use the drawstring(I'm size 32 and got the M). Another cool thing is the logo is really discrete. Good athletic shorts, but if you don't like liners try something else.

This is the more technical offering from the world leader in men's underwear, SAXX. You get the same roomy pouch and stretchy-soft feel as with their other models, but with improved wicking and a quicker dry time. If you have experience with the brand and SAXX are the only underwear you'll ever own, definitely get these for your athletic endeavors.

So, a problem exists in this world. That problem is side-stick. Some enterprising individual endeavored to solve this problem with the Ballpark, or articulated pouch. Essentially what that is is a scrotical sidewall - the softest fabric known to man stitched into the crease between your upper thigh and stretchy skin. Keeps things separated, which is the perfect solution to the initial problem of side-stick. BOOM! Innovation!

When I first put these on, I thought that I would never put on another pair of underwear in my life. I was so enthusiastic I bought several pairs and began proselytizing to all who would listen. Alas, I've noticed that as the day wears on, the comfort wears off. I think it may have to do with how everything settles when you're sitting for an extended period of time, but again they just weren't super comfy. Additionally, I think these are designed with "above average" men in mind, and if I've ever been anything in life, it is certainly "average."

All in all, exceptional underwear here. The fabric is softer than a liberal PAC attack ad in primary season. But they're just not my favorite underwear of all time. Should be a 4.5 star option. Buy with confidence, gentlemen.

I've never seen stitching like this before. Surprised they only warranty these for 30 days because I've got a feeling I'll be passing this on to my grandson some day. I'm assuming it was manufactured by robots because no human could possibly be capable of this type of perfection. Couldn't possibly want anything more from a synthetic midweight baselayer. I found the sizing to be spot on but if you have significant muscle mass you may want to size up. I typically wear a medium base which leaves some lose fabric around the upper arm and shoulder area but this one was snug as a bug, almost like a compression piece.

Big fan of Saucony, i've got a couple iterations of their classic Jazz Low Pro. This particular model is made with synthetic adhesives, which is almost unheard of in the world of footwear. Granted, most glue comes from cows that have already been killed for being delicious and the protein colloid tissue from their ligaments and tendons isn't making its way into your ribeye, anyway. But don't tell your militant vegan cousin that last bit when you get him a sweet pair of new kicks for his birthday

For long hikes or overnight camping this guy is a champ! Super durable, perfect capacity, on the heavy side but if you're bringing booze you don't really care about that so much, yeah? This will fit in the front pocket of your jeans, but just barely, so don't go trying to sneak it into a music festival or the school dance. In addition to the bulge in your pocket, the light hits the stainless steel on this thing and projects a beam that can be seen from outer space. Super totally conspicuous. By that same token if you are lost in the woods, use it to signal rescuers.

The Canyonlands is pretty solid. Fit is on point and it's good to use as a midlayer on warmer days or as an around-town hoody. For hiking I'm taking a puffy, though. Warmer, lighter, and more compressible. That being said I'm not at all disappointed with this. I knew what the band sounded like before I bought a ticket :D

Really love this piece, it keeps me warm and dry and looks solid. Great price point, too. As another reviewer noted you can actually fit a football or motorcycle helmet under the hood, which is nice to have that range of use. If you're just rocking a ski helmet though there are cinch cords readily accessible. In addition to the waterproof insulation i was probably even more impressed at how this thing blocked the wind. Love it!

I've been a Levi's guy ever since I ditched the JNCOs back in 8th grade, and most recently wore their 511 slim fits. Sacrificed a bit of utility for style, though, and was craving a bit more room in the pockets. I tried Levi's 513's but the butt and thighs weren't quite snug enough for my tastes. Enter the RVCA Daggers PVSH Fresh. These aren't overly stretchy, but have enough give that I can fit my 8oz flask in the front pocket for those particularly grueling family events. They look great and feel even better. These are the first jeans I've owned that don't immediately come off in favor of sweat pants when i settle in for a Netflix binge. Big fan, do recommend.

Love the material on this and I'm a huge fan of the brand. The colors are sharp and the fabric is super soft with just the right amount of stretch. Unfortunately anything with a "regular" fit is typically too bulky for my frame. A small is too small and a medium is too loose. If you're a skinny dude that likes a baggier fit this would be perfect. That's not really my style, though.

Really nice pair of jeans, almost as comfortable as sweat pants. I've been weight training this winter(Netflix and Dominos every weekend) and my typical 32 jeans were getting a bit tight around the ol' muffin top so I figured I'd get the 33. Totally work and I don't need a belt but with the extra stretch in these jeans I could have easily swung a 32. If you fluctuate in weight throughout the year these are going to be super forgiving as you add 10-15 pounds over the holiday cookie season.

Great baselayer, does exactly what it's supposed to from a moisture-wicking and insulating perspective. The fit was a little loose on me but exactly what I expected from a medium(smalls across brands are too small for my skinny/tall frame). Couple it up with the warm tights and you're all set for resort skiing or winter jogs in the park
