Grant Johannes's Bio

After four years of living in the flat, humid city of Memphis, I decided I had to get west and in the mountains. I really enjoyed my time at Rhodes College, but there was always something missing.

Now, I have happily settled in Salt Lake City, Utah where the mountains are on my doorstep, and I can ride some of the best single track and ski slopes in the world within a matter of minutes.

If you have any questions or would like for me to be your personal Gearhead, please contact me at my email gjohannes@backcountry.com.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

It's awesome that Patagonia made a bike specific rain coat. I've been wearing their jackets for years. So, now that I can wear one on bike, I'm set for every occasion. The cut is perfect so that you get any bunching or constriction when you're in the riding position. The material is super breathable since it's not fully waterproof so you don't feel like you're wearing a trash bag, but it still sheds water nicely. I got a size large so I can wear it with thicker layers off the bike, but I would get a medium if I were to wear it solely on the bike. I'm 5'10" 170lbs with broad shoulders.

Once it gets warm enough, you won't see me in any other shorts. I have so many pairs of Baggies, and I wear them everywhere. The beach, the lake, on hikes, laying on the couch. They are super comfortable and durable. The deep pockets mean you don't to worry about your phone or keys falling out, and they dry very quickly. So, you can be pulling tantrum on your wakeboard one minute, then comfortably flipping burgers the next. I cut out the mesh liner, but they wear comfortably with it in or out.

I upgraded my Fox Performance 36 fork with the Grip 2 damper, and my fork feels so much better now. The adjustability the Grip 2 damper offers has allowed me to dial my fork in so that it is plush and planted over rough and chunky terrain so that plow through anything in my way. While I also have it set up so that it is supportive enough for me to pop up and over anything I want when I want.

I you're scared that the installation will be too difficult, don't worry. I had never done any work on a fork myself before installing this damp, and it was a supper simple process. There are some great videos on YouTube that do a fantastic job of walking you through each step of the installation.

I love these goggles. They fit on your face comfortably without obstructing breathing, and they have great peripheral vision. The gold Clarity lenses do a great job of blocking light on blue bird days while still providing great contrast. They also work pretty well in relatively low light days, but I wouldn't use them in super low light. I wore these with the POC Auric Cut BC Spin helmet, and they fit seamlessly.

Fit: True to size

These bibs are incredible. The 3 layer Gore-Tex material is impenetrable yet still light and easy to move around in. I love the kangaroo pocket on the chest, and the abundance of pockets in general. The straps are easy to adjust, as well as the belt around the waist so dialing in your fit is super easy. The Beech Green color is definitely more a brown than a tan, but other than that these bibs are perfect.

I've worn these gloves in a bunch of different temps, and they always kept my hand warm and dry with overheating. Also, natural leather color looks great. My only draw back is that they don't have lanyards.

Lightweight and functionally work well ripping in bounds and on all terrain and in the backcountry. Touring mode is easy to switch to, and the heal lock is reliable when I need it, and the variable ascension degrees are awesome. Highly recommend if you don't have pin boots but still want to ski tour.

This cage holds on to bottles really well and the side entry makes getting the bottle in and out of the tight area beneath my shock on my Hightower LT super easy.
