Four Horsemenwrote a review of Patagonia R1 Lite Yulex Front-Zip Full Suit - Men's on December 4, 2017
Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Fit: True to size
Just got this bad boy before a trip to get in the water in Southern California last week. Spent 3 days in the water with it and have some notes to share.
First and foremost, this thing is WARM. Like really warm. It's rated for 65-75 degrees. Air temp for us was probably mid 60's (Colder in the am and warmer in the afternoon/evening) most of the time and water temp was in the lower 60's. Granted, I run pretty warm, but when the sun was out, this thing was HOT - which is great since I want this as my only suit. I'd err to the side of this thing being warmer than not when considering.
I would say allow some break in time for this to stretch out. I read a lot of reviews about this suit being a bit stiff to start and would concur. Not uncomfortable by any means - it feels soft against your skin, but it's definitely a bit of a mission to get in and out of as it breaks in. Surf with a friend to have someone to help you get your arm out during the break in process :)
Keep in mind - any suit that fits right and is going to do it's job, is going to fit pretty darn tight off the hanger at first. That's just a bit more pronounced with the stiffness of the Yulex material.
I'm about 185 lbs and 5'8. I debated between a L and LS for size. Glad I went with the L. I'm closer to the top end of the weight range for sure, but the measurements fit well. Only bunching I noticed was from extra length in the arms.
All in all - a great wetsuit. The Eco story is great, kept me super warm. I'd only take into consideration the added break in time to make this easy to get in and out of. If you're going to be surfing sporadically - only a few times a year, etc., you may want to opt for something with an easier in/out and quicker break in time. Otherwise, this thing is killer.
