Erin Mounce's Bio

I just started my first season with Backcountry. I'm an east-coast transfer who just arrived in Salt Lake City in the fall of 2016. Since graduating from the University of Connecticut, I've been working seasonally from the woods of Maine, the deserts of California and the shores of Alaska working on trails, educating youth and taking inventory of wilderness areas. I'm an avid backpacker and runner. I began my climbing career in Joshua Tree National Park a couple of years ago and am continuing to grow in that field.

BD nails it again with this sleek, easy to use TwistLock carabiner. If you're debating between a screwgate and a twistlock gate, I strongly suggest the twistlock. It's so easy and is really safe - it takes a bit of effort to actually twist it, so it's not something that you can mess up while belaying (those were my beginning climbing partners initial concerns).

I highly recommend.

This is my second pair of these pants and I have been thrilled with this purchase from the moment I received them. I'm more in love with this print than my last, and the fabric is soft, breathable, lightweight yet durable. I've already received multiple comments about the great pattern.
I'm glad I went with the medium. I feel it fits true to size, and there's still a very comfortable amount of room. These passed the 'bend-over test' as well and weren't see-through. If you're on the fence, go for it. You'll appreciate your decision in the long run.

This tank top is soft, lightweight and is a great way to wear the goat. I initially ordered it in a medium because women's clothes tend to be a bit tighter and I wanted a looser feel -- way too loose! I swapped it out for the size small where I still have some extra room. It's a nice long, loose feel now which I dig.

Petzl makes solid, trustworthy gear which is very important for a good belay device. It's a good price, solid, and a pretty color (I got the blue).
Not much to report on this, other than it's a great product and you wouldn't regret purchasing it.

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I used this on a 3-night backpacking trip in Sedona and was pleasantly surprised. I've traditionally used MSR MiniWorks which works perfectly fine and gets the job done...but comparatively I thought the Sweetwater was almost easier to use, and cruised through liters of water. I'm sure some of that is due to the filter being new.
Compared to the Miniworks, the inflow is on the bottom and the outflow is on the top (oppositive of MW), and there is a pressure release valve. I didn't get the pressure build up on this trip that got the PRV involved, but if it works how I imagine it will - it's going to be a nice feature. The pressure build-up in the MW can be impossible to deal with sometimes, so I think having an out will be helpful for that issue.
My one concern is being able to test the filter. In the MW, you can take out the ceramic filter and use the clip to see if the filter is bad...it's pretty cut and dry which I like. I think the SW you just look inside the tube to see if the filter is worn out, or I guess you won't be able to filter water anymore which would let you know as well. There may be a better way to check it out, but at this point I'm not sure. Easy to work around though and otherwise it seems like a great filter!

These mittens look good and feel good. I haven't put them through the full test on a cold day on the slopes yet, but used them for some cross country skiing in the 20's, and was beyond pleased. They have wrist leashes, durable and smooth leather exterior, they are soft on the inside with removable liners - they even come with a small leather care kit. I'm sure I will love these mittens once I get to use them for downhill skiing and believe they will do a great job keeping me warm based on my XC experience.

I bought this jacket as a gift for my boyfriend. Here's his review:
"The jacket looks great and I love the color. The sizing is accurate and the hood is great. I'm not happy with the durability of the outer shell though. This is definitely not a mountain workhorse and will not tolerate rough use. Works perfectly as a winter jacket for city use. I would recommend pairing it with a shell on very cold/windy days though. I really wish Patagonia would give this jacket a more durable outer fabric."

He ended up getting a tear pretty soon after opening this up, on a wooden fence. Easy enough to fix, and Patagonia has a sweet warranty, so it all worked out in the end.

I just got my third pair of this same model. I've been using them for the past two years and will probably buy them again. I love the Kinvara model because they are so lightweight and have a very minimal break-in period. I love them but did find in my past two pairs that the mesh outer - especially around the toe-box - is prone to wearing out pretty quickly. The performance didn't decrease at all but my mesh is full of holes. This pair may prove to be more durable, we'll see!
If you're looking for a lightweight, neutral, minimal running shoe - this is it!

I returned these before putting them to the test. Had I read over the other reviews a bit more first, I might have prevented this. I was looking for a thin glove to double as a liner glove for extra cold days, but the windstopper fleece was a bit more rigid than I had realized for my purposes.
I also sized up, getting the medium, which especially did not fit my purposes.
Good durable material and a good look. The handwarmer component makes a great addition!

I first bought the women's version of these boots for myself, and recently purchased a pair for my boyfriend, after having fallen in love with my pair.
These were his first hiking boots and he couldn't be more thrilled. There was no 'break-in' period for these boots, and neither of us have gotten a blister yet after miles and miles in these boots. We have worn them on the rocky East Coast, the sandy deserts in the Southwest, up on glaciers in Alaska and just about everywhere in between and they perform well across the board, and sometimes even double as approach shoes, as their grip is insane, even after two years of solid use in my case.
These shoes are durable, but don't feel heavy on your feet. I've even used mine to run with in slushy conditions and they did not feel cumbersome whatsoever.
My one critique - they're so waterproof and thick that they can cause a bit of a 'swamp-situation' at the end of a hot day, but this just gives us an excuse to take a break and air our feet out.
True to size for both of our pairs.
