Eric Smith's Bio

There's a magical silence in the mountains during a snow storm... until you hear me hootin' and hollerin' as I shred down the slope, so hopefully, I'm not disturbing your solitude.

My two main outdoor activities are skiing in the winter and backpacking in the summer.

I love to help others so if you have any questions about any reviews I've left, or anything else, don't hesitate to give me a call or email, 801-523-4078, ersmith@backcountry.com

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

My girlfriend and I initially were looking at much more expensive harnesses for her, and she tried a few on. They were all nice, but she ultimately decided on this harness because it had all the features she was looking for, and more. The adjustable leg loops and leg lengths adjust to her body, and the harness is comfortable. It's a great deal for what you get: the harness, the chalk, chalk bag, and the ATC-XP belay device and locking carabiner. Great set for a beginning climber.

I initially didn't want to order these because I lose glasses so quickly but I thought I would at least take a look at them and return them if they didn't look good... that was a flawed idea because of course I loved them and didn't return them haha.

The polarized lenses are the best I have ever looked through with amazing clarity. The side panels and the middle piece above the nose block the sun and wind but are removable to create super awesome casual glasses for when you don't need the extra protection.

These are definitely the nicest glasses I've ever owned but what really encouraged me to write a positive review was the amazing customer service I received. Like I mentioned above, the piece above the nose is removable, so I removed it when driving in the car and wearing them casually. I promptly lost the piece and was quite sad about it. I emailed Vuarnet's customer service and they got back to me a few days later saying they would be happy to replace it if I gave them an address to send it to. I was very satisfied with that response given they are a French company and I didn't expect help from overseas. Luckily, I found the lost piece in my car the same morning that they responded so I didn't need a replacement. :)

I ordered these as a Christmas gift for my brother. I have tried on many other Nike Janoski shoes and they are all over the map in terms of sizing so I was worried. He is a pretty true size 11.5 and to our mutual delight, the 11.5 fit perfectlyl!.

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Fit: Runs small
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 160 lbs
Size Purchased: Medium

I have spent the last year looking at snow bibs. I really liked Norrona, Arc'teryx, Marmot, FlyLow, and the new North Face bibs but I felt like I was constantly sacrificing something.

Arc'teryx didn't have great pockets, FlyLow was a little heavy, Norrona was expensive, etc. Then a friend mentioned I should check these out and they're freakin' perfect. The pockets are low profile but big enough for a sandwich. The material is super breathable, utterly waterproof, and rugged. The suspenders felt so good that I had no idea I was wearing them until I took them off. The bib section is very stretchy and they zip off if you don't want to use them on a hot day.

I tried a small first since that's what I normally wear but the bib section was a little tight so I went with the medium and it's perfect. If you are between sizes I'd recommend going up a size.

I normally wear a base layer, a mid layer, and then my shell jacket. I just upgraded to this jacket as my shell layer and it's too good. It breathes so well that I was never able to retain any heat and I was cold (and dry) for the first time skiing in a while. I went to my car after a few hours, grabbed another jacket and I was perfectly warm and dry for the rest of the day. I guess I've never used GoreTex Pro but this technology is amazing. I am always sweating and trapping moisture under my shell layer while skiing but not anymore!

The sizing of this jacket is also great. I'm a true medium in T-shirts, and I'm glad I got the medium in this jacket. I had plenty of rooms for layers, but it doesn't look too baggy. It is a bit long but it looks great.

The two chest pockets are massive. Big enough for climbing skins, lunch, water bottle, and probably more. I love how they are on the chest and not the hips because now my backpack hip belt isn't covering any pockets.

I haven't tested its waterproofness but I can only imagine it is outstanding. This is definitely the best jacket I have ever owned.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have the 2017 model of these skis and they were my everyday ski last year at Snow Bird resort in Utah. I got many deep powder days which they definitely excelled in but they're also super stable at high speeds on hardpack. The weight took some getting used to as I have the 192s and they're the biggest ski I own but it didn't hinder my ability to skis trees. I'm 5'11and 160 lbs for reference.

They are stiff skis but coupled with the rocker in the tip and tail they were perfectly floaty in the deep stuff but made for confident charging on the hardpack. They chattered at high speeds but that was only where the tip wouldn't touch the snow because of the rocker. The HRZN tech tip on the tip and tails is also super awesome. You can't tell a difference when on hardpack as they don't touch but in the deep stuff they make for some playful slashing.

If you don't mind the weight, are looking for a new pow ski that also slays all other conditions, I'd recommend this ski. I would also say these should be paired with a burly binding like the Atomic STH2 WTR 16 bindings which I rock on them.

I wear a medium in shirts that are made well with other materials besides cotton, but I wear a large in shirts that are standard cotton Ts made from China. The fit on this is slightly large so I bought a medium in this and it's perfect. In the reviews below, MJPrator has the exact same measurements and bought the large and also says it's perfect but for me, the large would feel too baggy around my stomach.

This has the same high-quality design as the nano-puff.... but the kangaroo pouch takes it for the win!

Just like all other Sk8 shoes I've bought, these fit perfectly. A little bit roomy compared to many Nike's but in the perfect way. I'm a true size 9 and the 9's are perfect.

The re-issue color is super awesome. I have gotten them dirty as should be expected but I think they look better as they age.

I love these flip-flops. Or rather, I should say that I loved them. They fit well, have great tread, and are super comfy.
I'm hoping this is just a personal problem, but I have noticed that they have become very smelly. I wash them regularly to combat the stench but it doesn't seem to have an impact.

What I think is going on is that bacteria is getting trapped in the micropores of the rubber. I have two other pairs of Chacos and they do not smell as bad as these do. In fact, the material seems to be different on the footbed which is why I think it is a problem with these specific flip-flops and not just my stinky feet.

I haven't tried anything like Isopropyl alcohol but I'll update this post if I try anything that reduces the smell.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

My friend borrowed this when he backpacked in the Canyonlands NP. Here is what he had to say after a 3 day, two-night trip: For most of my camping career, I used an extra sweater as a pillow. It was easy and if the night turned out colder than expected, I could just wear it instead. Backpacking pillows seemed unnecessary luxuries that I didn't have room in my pack for. And although this pillow is a bit more voluminous than I had hoped, it's light and - given a while to fluff up rolled out - it rivals most conventional bedroom pillow I've encountered. this will give you the night's sleep you're hoping for, even if you've switched a bed for a sleeping bag and your bedroom for a tent.

I'm a size 9 and my foot is slightly wide. These shoes fit perfectly. Scarpa did it right. You're able to customize the fit with the laces as well.

The detailed features make this shoe.
