Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If you don't need a 2-slot belay device, this is really the best. The simplicity and reliability of a tube device, but with an actual mechanical failsafe - if you let go, it stops the rope! I'm surprised climbing gyms haven't started to require this instead of standard tube devices. It is about the same weight as a BD ATC Guide. I am an absolute convert.

I really really love this for ice climbing belays. It is very puffy, which makes me feel warmer psychologically, but it nevertheless packs down quite nicely. I agree with others that the zipper is a little bit fiddly, but once you learn what it wants it works reliably - you just have to get it seated right. Runs huge compared to other OR jackets, by the way!

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I really wanted this jacket to work for ice climbing. There is only one problem - the tiny-caliber sleeves! I have moderately big biceps - not huge - and even the XL was squeezed tight around them. The men's sleeves are much bigger around, but the arms are too long for me. . . Oh well. If you have skinny arms, go for it, it's otherwise awesome. If you have bulging biceps, be warned.

I bought this for a week-long trip to Europe, and it was perfect - exactly enough room, and very low-profile (especially because of the smooth flap over most of the rear) which made hustling through the airport and squeezing onto trains surprisingly easy. I agree it has minimal external pockets - that was a plus for me. Only complaint is that the shoulder straps are very wide and rubbed on my neck and armpits no matter how I adjusted the pack (I'm a 5ft5 female, 145 lbs). I would not have wanted to wear this all day with a full load, but for Euro-traveling it was ideal.
